During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Great Tang Dynasty, there was a Daoist priest in Zhongnan Mountain who lived to be over three hundred years old. The emperor summoned him and asked about his longevity. The priest replied, "I frequently consume Xuánmíngfěn (Mirabilite Powder), which is why I have attained such a long life." The emperor tested it, and indeed, it proved effective. Consequently, it was bestowed with a name and passed down through the world. When refined to the finest quality, this medicine appears white; those of other colors are unusable. Taking it can eliminate various diseases, regardless of whether they are recent or chronic, including wind-toxin, deficiency-cold, and other ailments. It cures all conditions without exception. For Yunbing (dizziness/vertigo), the dosage can be adjusted according to severity using specific guiding herbs. To promote purgation, one should first use Taohua Tang (Peach Flower Decoction) or Congbai Tang (Scallion White Decoction). If unobstructed, drink another bowl or half a bowl. Take it daily on an empty stomach or at night, guided by the specific condition. Long-term consumption for forty-nine days eliminates chronic diseases, clears accumulated pathogens, and gradually makes the body feel light and healthy. Continuous long-term use extends life, ensures longevity, protects against cold and heat, keeps the complexion youthful like that of a child, and turns white hair and beard black. Its merits cannot be fully described.
Select high-quality Zhen Yù Puxiāo (True Jade Glauber's Salt). This substance is the essence of Taiyin (Great Yin) and is formed by the convergence of Bing Fire from the South and Gui Water from the North, refined into a pill-like form. For each batch, use five dou of Puxiāo (Glauber's Salt), three buckets of water, and five jin of radishes sliced into pieces. Place them together in an iron pot and refine. Once clear, remove and filter out the dregs, clarifying five to seven times. At night, expose it under the stars and moon until dawn. Naturally, blue-white blocks will form in the earthenware basin. Drain the water, dry it, and store it in a small porcelain jar, pressing it firmly. Then place it in a Bagua Furnace. Start with Wenhuo (gentle fire) and switch to Wuhuo (strong fire), progressing from slow to tight, until it naturally melts into liquid. After boiling ceases to make noise, add top fire for one shichen (two hours). Continue this for a full day and night. Once cooled, remove, crush, and sieve into powder. On clean ground, cover the medicine with a new earthenware basin to remove Huodu (fire toxicity). Finally, grind into fine powder. For every one jin of powder, add one liang each of raw Gancao (Licorice Root) and cooked Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), mix thoroughly. Before sleep, take an appropriate amount, either one qian or two qians, washed down with Taohua Decoction or Congbai Decoction. This medicine primarily treats conditions caused by evil-heat affecting the diaphragm, causing upper fullness and obstruction/stagnation in the five zang organs. Although Puxiāo is originally warm-natured and non-toxic, the refining process involves eight critical steps, detailed as follows: 1. Clarify the salt; 2. Remove the salty taste; 3. Arrange the furnace; 4. Consolidate the bone qi; 5. Control the fire intensity; 6. Close the fire door; 7. Remove fire toxicity; 8. Combine with Licorice Root.
