Treats infantile vomiting and diarrhea; greatly harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach, promotes appetite, resolves stagnation, and dissipates accumulations.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 6 qian) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang 5 qian, stir-fried with aged soil) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, peeled, 1 liang) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 5 qian) Bai Dou Kou (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus, large ones, husked, 15 grains) Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, large ones, 40 grains, stir-fried) Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen, medium-large ones, 4 eggs' whites for stir-frying) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 2 qian) Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice)
The above herbs are ground into an extremely fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a soap bean. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in rice water on an empty stomach.
For treating food injury in children, this formula is suitable for promoting digestion and resolving stagnation.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 7 fen) Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 1 qian) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 6 fen) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 4 fen) Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 6 fen). If injured by milk, porridge, rice, or noodles, add Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, truly stir-fried until fragrant, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 6 fen), and increase Mai Ya (5 fen). If injured by fish, meat, fruits, etc., add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus, 1 qian, stir-fried), Sha Ren (5 fen), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 fen), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus, 3 fen). If injured by cold/raw foods, presenting with abdominal pain or cold, white-colored diarrhea, add Sha Ren, Shan Zha, Shen Qu (each 8 fen), Wei Mu Xiang (Stir-fried Aucklandiae Radix, 4 fen), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried until purple-black, 3 fen). If injured by pungent/hot foods, or if food stagnation persists for a long time causing heat from food retention, presenting with vomiting of sour fluid, or dysentery/stool accumulation with difficulty passing, or yellow/black stool, this indicates Heat. Add Huang Lian stir-fried with ginger (7 fen), Shan Zha, Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 5 fen), Mu Xiang (2 fen). For ordinary mild food injury, medication is not necessary; simply decoct Mai Ya with two slices of ginger and drink the soup.
Decoct the above herbs with two slices of ginger and one zhong of water until reduced to six fen. Take before meals. If dietary injury damages the Spleen and Stomach, causing food accumulation that generates heat manifesting as surface fever or alternating tidal fevers, only regulate the Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach); the surface heat will resolve spontaneously. Do not use exterior-releasing methods. Use the previous formula plus Shan Zha, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 8 fen each), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root, 2 fen), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 2 fen), Huang Lian (5 fen) to eliminate heat from food stagnation. If surface heat remains, it is also appropriate to add herbs to clear Spleen/Stomach heat. If heat is vigorous and the pulse is forceful, add Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 qian). These drugs belong to the Taiyin and Yangming meridians.
After infants take the aforementioned digestive formulas and the accumulation is cleared but diarrhea continues, take this formula to tonify and regulate the Spleen and Stomach to stop diarrhea.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian 2 fen) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 1 qian) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian, wine-stir-fried) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, stir-fried/wei) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen, each 4 fen) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, ginger-stir-fried) Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, ginger-stir-fried) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, each 6 fen) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried until half-black, 2 fen 5 hao)
Decoct the above herbs with two slices of ginger and appropriate water. Take warm before meals. After diarrhea stops, regulate to restore Spleen and Stomach Qi. Remove Gan Jiang, Shen Qu, and Rou Dou Kou from this base formula, and add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 6 fen), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, text missing character 'Qi' implied, 6 fen - *Note: Original text has line break after 'Huang', context implies Huang Qi*), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 fen), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, ginger-processed, 8 fen), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 6 fen), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 fen).
These are all mild preparations, suitable for long-term regulation to restore Stomach Qi. Even adults may take them.
Mo Ji Ding (Accumulation-Dissipating Pellet): Treats all types of accumulation stagnation in children.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, aged soil-stir-fried, 2 liang) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 liang) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-stir-fried, 1 liang) Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, 1 liang) Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, bran-stir-fried, 1 liang) San Leng (Sparganii Rhizoma, 2 liang) E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, 2 liang) A Wei (Ferulae Resina, authentic, 1 liang) Hei Qian Niu (Pharbitidis Semen, first extract, 1.5 liang, half raw half stir-fried) Ba Dou Shuang (Crotonis Semen Pulvis, 3 qian, separately ground) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 3 qian) Niao Sha (Sal Ammoniac, 1 qian, washed to remove sand) Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, bran-stir-fried, 1 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 liang)
Grind the above herbs into powder. Make a paste using half Shen Qu powder and half Mai Ya flour. Pound and knead over a thousand times. Mold into pellets. Each wet pellet weighs 2 qian; dried in shade, approx. 1 qian. Dosage: Children over 8 years old take one pellet; under 7 years old take half a pellet. Grind in boiling plain water on an empty stomach and take. Mild loose stools once or twice are acceptable. Do not take if there is no accumulation.
