According to the *Treatise on Regulating the Spirit According to the Four Qi*, "Yin and Yang, and the four seasons, are the beginning and end of all things, and the root of life and death. To go against them brings disaster; to follow them prevents severe illness. This is called attaining the Dao. Spring warmth promotes growth, summer heat promotes flourishing, autumn coolness promotes harvesting, and winter cold promotes storage. If the climate contradicts the season, disease and pestilence arise. This is the constant way of Heaven: following it ensures life, opposing it causes sickness. The *Classic* says: 'Observe the Way of Heaven, grasp the conduct of Heaven, and that is sufficient.'
If a person can grasp the principles of life and death in the Way of Heaven, and act by modeling the operation of the four seasons, naturally diseases will not arise, and longevity can be preserved. For those with white hair (the elderly), the Qi of the five Zang organs is deficient, and spirit and essence are exhausted. If there is even slight loss of regulation and circulation, critical consumptive diseases may immediately develop. Generally, the elderly are weary and lazy, unable to self-regulate, relying on others' care to extend their lifespan. As children, one should carefully observe the elder's cold and heat conditions and prudently select medicines. Based on seasonal preservation methods, aligning with the waxing and waning Qi of the Five Elements, one should respectfully and diligently serve parents, without slackness. Herein are collected general preventive medicine methods for the elderly across the four seasons, detailed below (these formulas mostly use cold-natured herbs, suitable perhaps for northerners. Users should consider local conditions).
