When the fetal qi is disordered, during pregnancy the qi forces upward, causing abdominal distension and pain; this condition is called "Zixuan" (Fetal Suspension). It is feared to lead to difficult labor.
[Therapeutic Principle]
When fetal qi rushes to the abdomen and heart region, causing fullness, oppression, distension, and pain, it is termed Zixuan. Zisu San (Perilla Leaf Decoction) can calm the fetal qi; one dose should render the patient peaceful and safe.
Zisu San (Perilla Leaf Decoction)
Perillae Folium (Zisu), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi - white pith removed), Arecae Pericarpium (Dafupi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Rubra (Guiwei), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Fengcao), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao). Add five slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) and seven cun of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai).
Decoct and take orally. For various diseases before delivery, modify this formula as needed: add Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) for abdominal pain; add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) for heat; add Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) and Morus Cortex (Sangbaipi) for cough; add Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen) for vomiting; add Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) and Poria (Fuling) for diarrhea.
In pregnant women, Kidney deficiency combined with Damp-Heat in the Bladder occurs. Kidney deficiency fails to promote water metabolism, resulting in frequent urination. Bladder heat causes scanty, difficult, and obstructed urination. The uterus is connected to the Kidneys; deficiency-heat arising from the Kidneys leads to Lin syndrome (Strangury). In severe cases, mental restlessness and irritability occur, named "Zilin" (Fetal Strangury).
[Therapeutic Principle]
Zilin San is discussed in the chapter on treating strangury. If heat accumulation causes urinary retention and qi obstruction, Anrong San can be used. It has significant efficacy; taking it brings relief and remarkable results.
Anrong San (Nourishing Harmony Decoction)
Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maidong), Tectona Grandis Stem (Tongcao), Talcum (Huashi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Chuan Gui), Junci Medulla (Dengxin), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) (each 0.5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
If the mother suffers from a febrile disease, after six or seven days the internal organs become extremely hot. This heat steams the fetus, causing fetal death and cooling of the body. The dead fetus cannot be expelled naturally, leading to panting. If the mother's tongue turns blue, it indicates a fatal prognosis.
[Therapeutic Principle]
A deep pulse with panting and retained dead fetus indicates a fatal condition. If movement of heat damages the fetal qi, causing qi to rush upward, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Belamcandae Rhizoma (Shegan) can be mixed and taken with wine. Heishen San (Black Divine Decoction) can also facilitate expulsion.
Heishen San (Black Divine Decoction)
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi), Puerariae Radix (Puhuang - stir-fried), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Heiganjiang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao - wine-fried), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (each 3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (3 qian), Sojae Semen Nigrum (Heidou - stir-fried, skin removed, 3.5 he).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with child's urine and wine. Other versions use Red Peony Root (Chishao).
During delivery, excessive effort causes lochia to reverse upward. The placenta follows the rebellious qi upward, causing cardiac confusion and oppression. If this persists for a moment without stopping, death will ensue and cannot be saved.
[Therapeutic Principle]
Why does the placenta fail to descend? Fatigue is due to excessive exertion. Retention of wind-cold or blood entering the uterus causes uterine swelling, which is helpless. Urgently administer Mingdan (Life-Saving Pill) to invigorate blood; Niuxi Tang (Achyranthes Decoction) offers even more efficacy. Yimucao (Motherwort) mixed with child's urine and wine facilitates the smooth and clean expulsion of the placenta.
Qiming Dan (Miraculous Life Pill)
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi - processed, 1 qian), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Drynariae Rhizoma (Ganxi - 1 qian, stir-fried until smoke ceases), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (1 liang).
Grind into powder. Make Dahuang into a paste, form pills the size of Chinese quince seeds. Take 5-7 pills with wine.
Niuxi Tang (Achyranthes Decoction)
Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao), Puerariae Radix (Puhuang) (each 3 liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Chuan Gui - 1.4 liang, washed with wine), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (5 qian).
Combine as one dose. Take 5 qian per serving, add three slices of ginger and 1 qian of Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), decoct in water.
Another Prescription
Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Lupuli Flos (Qumai), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Rubra (Guiwei), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong) (each 1 qian), Talcum (Huashi) (2 qian), Abutilonis Semen (Dongkuizi - washed with wine, 1.5 qian), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) (1 qian).
Decoct and take hot. Treats irregular menstruation in women; this prescription lubricates the water passages to facilitate easy childbirth. Divide into three doses. Use two bowls of water, decoct to eight-tenths, and take warm.
