For pregnant women presenting with generalized edema or edema limited to the feet, this condition is colloquially known as "Tai Zhong" (Fetal Swelling) or "Tai Shui" (Fetal Water). Etiologies include: spleen deficiency failing to control water metabolism, leading to blood dispersing into the four limbs causing swelling; fetal qi carrying water dampness where water and blood contend; stomach deficiency generating dampness; contraction of wind-cold pathogens; edema occurring after dysentery or malaria; excessive dietary intake; or abdominal distension triggering swelling.
[Main Treatment Principle]
Tai Zhong is mostly caused by damp-heat. Gardenia (Zhizi) and roasted radish seed (Buzi/Laifuzi), ground into powder and taken as a thick paste mixed with rice gruel, can gradually resolve deficiency-type edema.
Regarding "Zi Fan" (Pregnancy-related Vexation), it occurs when deficient heat in the Lung organ attacks the Heart, resulting in mental vexation. Accumulated phlegm and retained fluids in the chest and heart region, or pathogenic factors affecting the Heart directly, also cause vexation. If caused by excess heat, there is merely fever. If caused by phlegm, there is aversion to food and restless breathing.
[Main Treatment Principle]
The etiology of maternal palpitations, chest tightness, and Zi Fan lies in the "Two Fires": the Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo) manifests in the fourth month, and the Xiang Fire appears in the sixth month, intertwining between them. Zhuye Tang treats deficiency-dryness diseases, while Mendong Yinzi is as effective as an elixir.

When a pregnant woman suddenly faints, loses consciousness, exhibits opisthotonos (body arched backward like a bow), and recovers after a short period, resembling stroke, it is named "Zi Xian" (Eclampsia of Pregnancy), also referred to as Feng Zheng (Wind Syndrome) or Zi Mao.
Siwu Tang nourishes the Blood; add Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Qin (Scutellariae Radix) to drain fire. The formula for Siwu Tang is listed earlier.
[Main Treatment Principle]
Maternal tendon stiffness, speech impediment, and phlegm, accompanied by intermittent convulsions, are named Xian (Epilepsy/Convulsion). If the pulse is floating, wiry, and slippery, Lingyang San should be decocted and taken to dispel wind, leading to gradual relief.
