*Suwen: Liuyuan Zhengji Dalun* records: In the years of Jiazi and Jiawu, the Qi transformation in the upper (Si Tian / Heaven ruling) manifests as salty-cold, in the middle (Zhong Yun / Central Movement) as bitter-hot, and in the lower (Zai Quan / Earth ruling) as sour-hot. This is what is meant by the appropriate nature of medicines and foods.
Xinzhengjiao notes: *Xuanzhu Mi Yu* records the lower as "sour-level". Furthermore, according to *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "When heat is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with salty-cold; when dryness invades the interior, it is treated with bitter-warm." The record here stating the lower as "sour-hot" is suspected to be an error. Wu Kun states: When Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) is above, it is appropriate to treat with salty-cold; Tai Gong (Taiyin Damp Earth) is in the middle, so it is appropriate to treat with bitter-hot; Zao Jin (Dryness Metal) is below, so it is appropriate to treat with sour-hot. Zhang Zhicong states: "Upper" refers to Si Tian, "lower" refers to Zai Quan, and "middle" refers to Hua Yun. Since Jun Huo rules Si Tian, it is appropriate to use salty-cold to restrain the transforming Qi; since Taiyin Shi Tu transforms in the middle, it is appropriate to use bitter flavor to dry dampness and hot property to warm Yin and Yang; since Yangming Qingliang rules Zai Quan, it is appropriate to use sour flavor to assist consolidation and hot property to warm coolness. Medicines and foods are mutually appropriate. This aligns with the principle in the previous chapter: "It is appropriate to use bitter to dry and warm, and food should follow the same method." The remaining years follow this pattern. Ma Shi states: The upper section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Si Tian. Generally, because excessive Fire overcomes Water, salty-cold is used to support Water, which corresponds to "When heat is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with salty-cold." The middle section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Earth Movement. The lower section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Zai Quan, corresponding to "When dryness invades the interior, it is treated with bitter-warm." Here, "sour-hot" is mistakenly written instead. Zhang Jingbin states: Using bitter-hot in the middle treats Tai Gong damp excess. Using sour-hot in the lower differs slightly from the preceding four movements, but later text mentions "warm," and mentioning "hot" here is not far off. Ji's commentary: *Xuanzhu Mi Yu: Tianyun Jialin Ji* for Jiawu year states that heat moves upward, treated with salty-cold; water property and water flavor subdue the excess of fire-heat; do not consume bitter-hot substances to aid the dominance of fire. *He Yuan Ji Yong Jing* states that Shaoyin Jun Huo is treated with salty-cold, using salty to regulate the upper and sour to regulate the lower. One must first attend to the Stomach Master and first attend to Ying and Wei. Regarding the appropriateness of the five flavors of medicines and foods for the year master: The masters of the six positions, if the host wins it is adverse, if the guest wins it is invasive; if the guest wins, drain; if the host wins, tonify the host, if the host wins, drain the guest. Each sector of host and guest occupies sixty days, residing without fixed location, migrating with the year. The origin of transformation covers one year, twelve months (or three months); intercept and obtain it, preventing evil from prevailing. For the master of Shaoyin, first sweet then salty; first use sweet to drain, then salty to tonify. Due to heat above and cold below, dispersing and tonifying must not be hasty. Suitable herbs include Red Bean Flower, Rehmanniae Radix, Myrrha, Poria Cocos (Note: Text says Put Huang, likely Puerariae Radix or similar, keeping original), White Peony Root, Shell, Cassiae Semen, Salt, White Silkworm, Millet, Antelope Horn, Coptis Chinensis, Benzoin, Large Chrysanthemum, Notopterygii Rhizoma, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, Orpiment, Snake Molt, etc., all suitable for the year master. Prescribe formulas according to symptoms; double the dosage of salty-cold; double the dosage for treating upper or lower as appropriate; double twice for equivalent conditions; triple for reliance on movement and guest/host adverse/conforming factors. The most doubled constitutes the Sovereign herb, determining the name; less doubled assists the Sovereign as Minister; not doubled corresponds to Envoy. For Jiazi and Jiawu, Upper Shaoyin salty-cold, Middle Earth Movement bitter-hot, Lower Yangming bitter-slightly-warm. *Xuanzhu Mi Yu* and *He Yuan Ji Yong Jing*, both attributed to Wang Bing, follow below.
In the years of Yichou and Yiwei, the Qi transformation in the upper manifests as bitter-hot, in the middle as sour-mild, and in the lower as sweet-hot. This is what is meant by the appropriate nature of medicines and foods.
Xinzhengjiao notes: According to *Xuanzhu*, the upper is sour-level, the lower is sweet-warm. Furthermore, according to *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "When dampness is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with bitter-hot; when cold invades the interior, it is treated with sweet-hot." Wu Kun states: "Qi transformation" refers to the disease transformation caused by Qi. The final sentence explains the upper, middle, and lower clauses. Zhang Zhicong states: Metal Qi governs consolidation, thus sour is appropriate to consolidate. "Mild" implies that although the Five Movements each govern a year, within a year there are also Five Movements of growth, transformation, and storage; thus, the five flavors are appropriate to harmonize them. Sweet is the flavor of Earth, capable of restraining and transforming Cold Water. Ma Shi states: The upper section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Si Tian; *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun* states "When dampness is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with bitter-hot." The middle section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Metal Movement; *Xuanzhu* upper is sour-level. The lower section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Zai Quan; *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun* states "When cold invades the interior, it is treated with sweet-hot"; *Xuanzhu* lower is sweet-warm. Zhang Jingbin states: Sour-mild in the middle: The master of Metal position, its tonification is sour, treating the deficiency of Shaoshang. Upper and lower are the same. Ji's commentary: *Xuanzhu Mi Yu: Tianyun Jialin Ji* for Yiwei year states that dampness moves upward, treated with sour-level; wood flavor and wood nature balance the excess of earth-dampness. *He Yuan Ji Yong Jing* states that Taiyin Shi Tu is treated with bitter-hot, bitter-warm assisting transformation. Upper and lower harmonize; September origin of transformation, intercept and obtain. Its transformation is bitter-hot to balance excessive dampness, supplement and resolve, changing places, dispersing evil dampness. Suitable herbs include Atractylodes, Ephedra, Aconite, Vitex Fruit, Cooked Mugwort Leaf, Notopterygii Rhizoma, Bupleurum, Peony, Belamcanda, Dried Ginger, Cinnamon Bark, etc., all suitable for the year master. Prescribe formulas according to symptoms; bitter-hot is appropriate for the upper. Taiyin bitter-hot, Middle Earth Movement bitter-mild, Lower Taiyang sweet-hot.
In the years of Bingyin and Bingshen, the Qi transformation in the upper manifests as salty-cold, in the middle as salty-warm, and in the lower as pungent-warm. This is what is meant by the appropriate nature of medicines and foods.
Xinzhengjiao notes: According to *Xuanzhu*, the lower is pungent-cool. Furthermore, according to *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "When fire is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with salty-cold; when wind invades the interior, it is treated with pungent-cool." Zhang Zhicong states: Water Movement governs salty, and after using salty to assist, subsequent transforming movements often use mild-assisting flavors, meaning to break stagnant Qi and nourish the origin of transformation. Ma Shi states: The upper section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Si Tian; the middle section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Water Movement; the lower section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Zai Quan; *Xuanzhu* lower is pungent-cool. Zhang Jingbin states: Middle salty is consistent with Water transformation, warm treats cold. Lower pungent-warm is Wood at Zai Quan. Xinzhengjiao detailed note: In Bingshen year, Shen Metal generates Water, making the command of Water transformation stronger; Si Tian Xiang Huo causes disease, dosage should be halved. Middle salty-warm, salty consistent with Water transformation, warm to treat cold. Lower pungent-warm, combining Wood at Zai Quan with the cold Qi of the movement. Ji's commentary: *Xuanzhu Mi Yu: Tianyun Jialin Ji* for Bingyin year states treatment with cold-salty, water flavor and water nature, to subdue the excess of fire-heat; do not consume bitter-hot substances to aid the dominance of fire. *He Yuan Ji Yong Jing* states that Shaoyang Xiang Huo is treated with salty-cold, using salty to regulate the upper and pungent to regulate the lower. March origin of transformation, intercept and obtain. Wind and heat are half-and-half; its transformation is salty-cold to balance wind-heat, treating interior with pungent-cool. Water Movement is pungent-warm, dispersing wind and resolving heat, evil cannot prevail. Suitable herbs include Antelope Horn, Gypsum, Anemones Root, Plantago Seed, Alisma, White Silkworm, Inula Flower, Oyster Shell, Ginseng, Iron Powder, etc., all suitable for the year master. Double the dosage of salty-cold. Upper Shaoyang salty-cold, Middle Water Movement salty-warm, Lower Jueyin pungent-cool.
In the years of Dingmao and Dingyou, Wang Bing states: Ding is Sui Hui. Xinzhengjiao detailed note: In Ding year, the first month Ren Yin is the Gan De Fu, becoming Ping Qi; no victory or revenge occurs, movement is identical to Zheng Jue; Metal does not overcome Wood, Wood does not disaster Earth. Also, Dingmao year gets Mao Wood to assist, so Upper Yangming cannot disaster it. The Qi transformation in the upper manifests as bitter-slightly-warm, in the middle as pungent-mild, and in the lower as salty-cold. This is what is meant by the appropriate nature of medicines and foods.
Xinzhengjiao notes: According to *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "When dryness is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with bitter-warm; when heat invades the interior, it is treated with salty-cold." Also *Xuanzhu* upper is bitter-hot. Ma Shi states: The upper section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Si Tian; *Xuanzhu* upper is bitter-hot. The middle section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Wood Movement. The lower section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Zai Quan. Zhang Jingbin states: Upper bitter-slightly-warm, bitter belongs to Fire, using Fire to treat Metal. Middle pungent-mild, pungent belongs to Metal, to harmonize Shao Jue. Lower salty-cold, using Water to treat Fire. Ji's commentary: *Xuanzhu Mi Yu: Tianyun Jialin Ji* for Dingyou year states treatment with bitter-hot, fire flavor and fire nature, can subdue diseases of Metal nature; do not take pungent-cool substances to aid the dominance of metal. *He Yuan Ji Yong Jing* states that Yangming Si Tian is treated with bitter-warm, using bitter to regulate the upper and salty to regulate the lower. June origin of transformation, intercept and obtain. Yang exclusively holds the command; its transformation is bitter-warm, named Xiao Wen, to balance the exclusive command. Cold follows cold, cold-cold is Great Cold. After cold comes cool, cool then Xiao Wen, Xiao Wen then Warm, very warm is called He, very He is called Xiao Re, very Xiao Re is Re. Use this as the method to balance and adjust Six Qi, warm and resolve cold, disperse. Suitable herbs include Ox Gall, Purple Ginseng, Anemone Root, Mulberry Root Bark, Sophora Fruit, Trichosanthes Seed, Bamboo Leaf, Bamboo Sap, Rhinoceros Horn, Fermented Soybean, Gardenia, Cimicifuga, Bupleurum, Salvia, Peucedanum, Eucommia Bark, Tea, Bitter Tea, Asparagus Tuber, Chrysanthemum, Notopterygii Rhizoma, Gentian, Scutellaria, Peony, Arisaema, Cow Bezoar, Dog Gall, Birch Bark, Peach Kernel, Buffalo Horn Cheekbone, Honeycomb, Ephedra, Aster, Atractylodes, Curcuma, Mirabilite, Lepidium Seed, Silkworm, Cassiae Seed, Deer Horn, Chestnut, Earthworm, Inula Flower, Antelope Horn, Rhaponticum, Indigo Naturalis, Iron Powder, Dendrobium, etc., all suitable for the year master. Prescribe formulas according to symptoms; double the dosage of bitter-slightly-warm; double the dosage for treating upper or lower as appropriate.
In the years of Wuchen and Wuxu, the Qi transformation in the upper manifests as bitter-warm, in the middle as sweet-mild, and in the lower as sweet-warm. This is what is meant by the appropriate nature of medicines and foods.
Xinzhengjiao notes: According to *Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "When cold is excessively prevalent, it is balanced with pungent-hot; when dampness invades the interior, it is treated with bitter-hot." Also *Xuanzhu* upper is sweet-warm, lower is sour-level. Ma Shi states: The upper section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Si Tian; the middle section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Fire Movement; the lower section discusses medicines and foods appropriate for Zai Quan. Zhang Jingbin states: Treatment for upper and lower this year is the same as before, only the central movement Tai Zheng differs from before, thus it is appropriate to treat with sweet-mild. Since Qi master assists the endless origin of life, spirit resides internally, diseases are cured. Essence generates form, strength does not lose opportunity. Renying and Qikou hold deep and subtle principles; not knowing the Stomach Master and not knowing Ying and Wei, one cannot speak of the appropriateness of nurturing life; not knowing Renying and not knowing Qikou, one cannot speak of the combination and separation of reversal and conformity. April origin of transformation, intercept and obtain. Wind and fire share virtue; regulating lower should use sour-cold, disperse and resolve changing places, pungent-cool shines brightly, many may understand.
