Shumi (Glutinous Millet, one sheng, which refers to the glutinous variety of millet) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, five he)
Use eight sheng of water from a thousand-mile journey, agitate it ten thousand times, and take five sheng of the clear water. Add the aforementioned herbs and decoct until one and a half sheng remains. Take one cup per dose, administered three times daily, with the cessation of symptoms as the endpoint. For newly onset cases, sleep is achieved immediately after finishing the cup, and sweating indicates recovery; for chronic cases, three doses are sufficient.
Qibo stated: When Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) circulates in the Yang aspect, the fullness of Yang Qi prevents its entry into Yin, and due to deficiency of Yin Qi, the eyes cannot close for sleep. Yang represents movement and opening; Yin represents stillness and closing. Therefore, when circulating in Yang, one is active and awake; when circulating in Yin, one is still and asleep. If Yang Light (Yang Qi) becomes hyperactive and rises upward, there is an excess of Qi and phlegm forms in the diaphragm. The Classic states: From dusk to the crowing of the rooster is the Yin time of heaven, specifically Yin within Yin. When Qi circulates in Yin but Yin is insufficient, Yang becomes increasingly erratic while Yin becomes increasingly obstructed; stillness turns into movement, closing turns into opening, Shen Qi (Spirit Qi) scatters and fails to remain anchored, thus the eyes cannot close for sleep. Shumi is sweet and neutral, benefiting Yin Qi and promoting bowel movements; Banxia is acrid and warm, unblocking phlegm orifices and promoting urination. With both bowels and urine unblocked, Qi can descend immediately, Yang no longer invades Yin, and sleep can be attained instantly. The Classic states: "When Yang is strong and cannot secure itself, Yin Qi will perish." It is only when Yin is peaceful and Yang is secreted that Spirit can thrive; this is what is meant here.
