First, calm the mind and preserve the spirit (Shen). Second, forget external distractions and eliminate excessive thinking. Third, regulate breathing to be even and steady the Qi (vital energy). Fourth (lightly place fingers between the skin to probe the Fu-organ pulse) is the Floating pulse (Fu Mai). Fifth (slightly press deeper into the muscle layer to obtain Stomach Qi) is the Moderate pulse (Zhong Mai). Sixth (press deeply up to the bone to obtain the Zang-organ pulse) is the Deep pulse (Chen Mai). Seventh, observe whether the patient's pulse beats rapidly.
The Floating method corresponds to the image of Heaven; at the level of the skin, it indicates Excess (Tai Guo).
The Moderate method corresponds to the image of Humanity; at the level of the muscle, it indicates Stomach Qi.
The Deep method corresponds to the image of Earth; at the level of the sinews and bones, it indicates Deficiency (Bu Ji).
If the Floating pulse indicates Excess, it manifests as Large (Da), Long (Chang), Solid (Shi), Tight (Jin), Wiry (Xian), Floating (Fu), Hollow (Kou), or Slippery (Hua) pulses.
If the Moderate pulse contains Stomach Qi, it is characterized by a pulse that is neither large, nor thin, nor long, nor short, nor floating, nor deep, nor slippery, nor choppy. It feels harmonious and moderate upon palpation, with a pleasant and subtle sensation that is difficult to describe in words; this is Stomach Qi.
If the Deep pulse indicates Deficiency, it manifests as Thin (Xi), Short (Duan), Empty (Xu), Soggy (Ru), Weak (Ruo), Deep (Chen), Choppy (Se), or Hidden (Fu) pulses.
When diagnosing the Heart region pulse: The first beat corresponds to the Heart, the second to the Spleen, the third to the Lung, the fourth to the Kidney, and the fifth to the Liver.
When diagnosing the Liver region pulse: The first beat corresponds to the Liver, the second to the Heart, the third to the Spleen, the fourth to the Lung, and the fifth to the Kidney.
When diagnosing the Kidney region pulse: The first beat corresponds to the Kidney, the second to the Liver, the third to the Heart, the fourth to the Spleen, and the fifth to the Lung.
When diagnosing the Lung region pulse: The first beat corresponds to the Lung, the second to the Kidney, the third to the Liver, the fourth to the Heart, and the fifth to the Spleen.
When diagnosing the Spleen region pulse: The first beat corresponds to the Spleen, the second to the Lung, the third to the Kidney, the fourth to the Liver, and the fifth to the Heart.
These sequences merely illustrate the principle of endless cyclic generation: Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, and Wood generates Fire, without interruption. If even one breath's movement ceases...

Each of the above pulses originates from its respective meridian and circulates among the Five Zang organs, repeating in a cycle. When encountering a pause (Zhi Mai, intermittent pulse) in any specific Zang organ, prognosis of auspiciousness or inauspiciousness is determined based on that affected Zang organ. For instance, if within forty-five beats no pause is observed, it indicates the absence of disease.
