Treats Kidney deficiency with Lung heat, wheezing and cough, vexation and thirst, hemoptysis, and lung atrophy (Fei Wei).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Tiantong (Asparagi Radix), Maitong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 4 liang). Decoct the two Tongs and two Dis to make a paste, mix evenly with fine powder of Renshen, and take small amounts frequently to hold in the mouth and dissolve slowly.
The water of Tianyi generates the Kidney; thus, the Kidney is the origin of all things and the root of the human body. However, people often damage their own root, causing the foundation to become unstable and consumption fever to arise. Heat causes Fire to injure Metal (Lung), leading to wheezing and cough. The two Dis (Shengdi and Shudi) tonify the Kidney as Sovereign drugs; for insufficiency of essence, one tonifies with flavor-rich substances. The two Tongss (Tiantong and Maitong) protect the Lung as Minister drugs; when there is deficiency, one tonifies the mother organ (Kidney). When Fire injures Metal and Lung Qi declines, only Renshen can provide rescue, as Li Dongyuan stated: "Without Yang, Yin cannot be generated." Moreover, the Lung governs Qi, and Qi roots in the Dantian. Renshen greatly tonifies Yuan Qi. Qi is the mother of Water. The use of Renshen is suitable for all situations; guided by Qi-invigorating herbs, it tonifies Yang; guided by Blood-nourishing herbs, it tonifies Yin. If one sticks rigidly to the theory that Lung heat injures the Lung, isolated Yin will not grow, which would be akin to waiting passively for death.
Lung abscess (Fei Yong) results from laborious injury to Qi and Blood, internal accumulation of heat, and external contraction of Wind-Cold. There is fullness and urgency in the chest, hidden pain, dry throat and mouth, and frequent expectoration of turbid, foul-smelling saliva. If pus resembling congee is expectorated, the prognosis is fatal. The pulse is slippery and rapid, or solid and large. In all patients, pressing the right hypochondrium causes pain. Taking this decoction alone will cause unformed abscesses to dissipate, formed abscesses to rupture, and ruptured abscesses to heal; it has proven effective repeatedly.
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (stir-fried), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) (5 qian), Gancao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma node), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1.2 qian), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) (1.6 qian), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii seu Lepidii Semen) (0.8 qian, slightly stir-fried). Decoct with ginger water, and take slowly after meals. For newly onset cases, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 1 qian and remove Huangqi; after rupture, add Renshen 1 qian; if healing is delayed, add Hehuanpi (Albiziae Cortex) 1 qian, also known as Yehe or Jingshu Pi (Moutan Cortex? Note: Text says Jinshu Pi, likely Hibiscus mutabilis bark, but standard TCM uses Albizia. Sticking to text: Jinshu Pi).
Treats hemorrhage from vomiting, spitting, and coughing due to consumptive diseases (Lao Zheng); use this to stop bleeding.
Daji (Cirsii Japonici Herba), Xiaoji (Cirsii Herba), Baye (Platycladi Cacumen), Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma), Qiangen (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Zonglupi (Palmii Folium Carbonisatum) (equal parts). Each herb is burned to ash while preserving its nature, ground into fine powder, wrapped in paper with a bowl placed upside down on the ground overnight to eliminate fire toxicity. To administer, crush fresh white lotus root to extract juice, or use radish juice, grind half a bowl of Beijing ink, mix with the powder, and take 5 qian after meals. If the condition is mild, this stops bleeding immediately. If blood loss amounts to sheng or dou units, use Huaruishi San (Mineral Ochre Powder) to stop bleeding.
Blood belongs to Yin but transforms under Fire influence; thus, its red color indicates disturbance by Yang heat, causing blood to stagnate upward and leading to Bo Jue syndrome. Black corresponds to Ren and Gui (Water elements); seeing black stops bleeding because Fire subdues itself upon encountering Water. Therefore, ashes and ink juice are used, possessing bitter and astringent flavors. Bitterness overcomes Fire, and astringency consolidates and prevents collapse. Furthermore, using child's urine as a guide to direct the medicine downward enhances the ability to subdue the pathogenic factors, surpassing the efficacy of radish and lotus root juices.
