Treats all conditions of Yang deficiency and Qi weakness, Spleen decline and Lung damage, withered and pale complexion, poor appetite, weakness in the four limbs, emaciation with yellowish face, dry and gathered skin with falling hair, and a fine and soft pulse.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Fu Ling (Poria, each 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian, honey-roasted). Decoct with water using Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) as adjuvants, and take orally.

The Spleen is the mother of all things. The Lung is the mother of Qi. When the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, Lung Qi fails first. If the Spleen fails to transport and transform, dietary intake decreases, leaving Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) without nourishment. The Spleen governs muscles, hence emaciation and yellowish face; the Lung governs skin and hair, hence dry, gathered skin and falling hair. Since both Spleen and Lung are deficient, the pulse appears fine and soft. This formula uses Ren Shen to tonify the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) of the five Zang organs, Bai Zhu to tonify the Mother Qi of the five Zang organs, Fu Ling to guide the Clear Qi of the five Zang organs, and Gan Cao to harmonize the discordant Qi of the five Zang organs. All four herbs are sweet and warm; sweetness belongs to the flavor of centrality, and warmth belongs to the nature of centrality, resembling a Junzi (Noble Person) who is unbiased. They spread virtue and grace, executing the command of Spring. As stated in the *Classic*: "Qi primarily provides warmth."

Treats all conditions of Blood deficiency with afternoon fever (occurring around Shen hour, 3-5 PM).
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-fried), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, each 3 qian), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian). Decoct with water and take orally.

As stated in the *Classic*: "Blood primarily provides moistening." The four ingredients of Si Wu Tang are all moistening substances, thus serving as the principal medicine for the Blood aspect. Di Huang is sweet and cold, entering the Heart and Kidney meridians to irrigate the source of Blood; Dang Gui is acrid and warm, entering the Heart and Spleen meridians to strengthen the root of generating and controlling Blood; Shao Yao is sour and cold, entering the Liver organ to astringe the Sea of Blood which is prone to dispersal; Chuan Xiong is Yang within Yin, capable of moving upward and downward, unblocking the three Yin meridians of the foot and circulating Qi within the Blood. However, Mr. Wu states: For those with excessive blood loss, Si Wu Tang is contraindicated because all four ingredients are Yin in nature. Yin represents the command of closure between Heaven and Earth, which is not suitable for generating all things.

Treats symptoms of combined Qi and Blood deficiency, aversion to cold and fever, irritability with thirst, loose stools, inability to eat, lower abdominal distension and pain, dizziness, vertigo, and faintness.
Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Di Huang, Bai Shao Yao. Decoct with water using Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as adjuvants, and take orally.

Qi belongs to Wei Qi and is Yang; Ying Qi belongs to Blood and is Yin. These are the two Yi (polarities) within the human body. Using only Si Wu Tang results in solitary Yin failing to grow; using only Si Jun Zi Tang results in solitary Yang failing to generate. Combining these two formulas brings the benefit of harmonizing Qi and Blood, avoiding the risk of Yin or Yang dominance. As stated in the *Classic*: "When Qi and Blood are balanced, one may enjoy a long life."
