Fetal cold syndrome occurs when the mother is exposed to cold pathogens or consumes excessive raw and cold foods while pregnant. Symptoms necessarily include abdominal pain with borborygmus, green loose stools, intermittent chills, clenched fists, and flexed legs. If untreated, it may develop into intestinal prolapse with diarrhea, trismus, or slow convulsions. For persistent fetal cold abdominal pain, extract Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) in water, mix with Frankincense (Ruxiang) and Myrrh (Moyao), and administer.

If symptoms follow erroneous sweating or purging methods, add Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang); if convulsions occur, add Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng).

Fetal heat syndrome arises because the mother consumed excessive heat-toxic substances or took heat-inducing drugs during pregnancy. After birth, upon smelling blood, the infant cries frequently, feeds eagerly/irritably, presents with high fever, pale tea-colored complexion, red face with closed eyes, burning mouth sensation, yellow-red stools, red and emaciated eyes, or frequent deficiency-phlegm causing wheezing and fullness, excessive eye discharge and tearing, lethargy with yawning, hiccups, difficulty in urination and defecation, or diarrhea with bloody watery stools. The hands may remain tightly clenched, feet twitch and contract, eyes deviate, and the body jerks and jumps. These are all caused by heat and fright acquired in the womb. If untreated, severe cases develop into convulsions; mild cases present with thrush, macroglossia, or purple-red erysipelas-like lesions. One should first prepare breast milk and resolve the pathogen gradually for recovery. Do not overuse cold-natured herbs, lest vomiting and diarrhea worsen the condition.
