Fetal jaundice is caused by maternal heat-toxin transmitting to the fetus. Its manifestations include yellowing of the face, body, and entire skin after birth, constipation, high fever, urine resembling vegetable juice, refusal to nurse or eat, and incessant crying. One should use formulas such as Niang Ru Sheng Di Huang Tang (Nourishing Milk Rehmannia Decoction), and avoiding heat-toxin foods is essential. Furthermore, infants whose skin and face are entirely yellow suffer from jaundice disease. If accompanied by body pain, stiffness in the shoulders and back, difficulty in urination and defecation, yellowing of the whole body, face, and nails, urine like yellow dust color, and staining clothes yellow, this is jaundice (Huang Dan). If thirsty, it is difficult to treat. However, these two conditions often arise after severe illness. Additionally, infants who are slightly yellow half a week or up to one hundred days after birth, not due to post-illness, have stomach heat. Those with a yellow face, large abdomen, accumulation, eating dirt, and thirst have spleen gan (malnutrition syndrome). If yellow from birth, it is fetal jaundice (Tai Dan). All sores are heat syndromes; deep yellow color indicates this. If pale yellow mixed with white, it indicates weak or disharmonious stomach qi.

Infants born with thick muscles all over the body, bright red blood color, red face, prominent black pupils, frequent phlegm production, gradual emaciation after one month, heat in the five centers (palms, soles, chest), difficult defecation, frequent drooling, and pinkish-white sclera are named "fetal fat" (Tai Fei). This occurs because the mother consumed excessive sweet and greasy food during pregnancy, causing damp-heat to flow into the uterus, resulting in a constitutionally flabby physique and stagnant heat in the blood level. Internally, administer Da Lian Qiao Yin (Large Forsythia Decoction) with modifications; externally, bathe the body using the bathing method.
