Tianma (2 qian), Quanxie (de-venomed), Zhusha (each 5 fen), Wushe Rou (soaked in wine), Baifan, Qingdai (each 3 qian), Shexiang (1 fen). All are ground into a fine powder uniformly. Take 3 qian of the powder with three bowls of water and a handful of Tao Zhi (peach twig), decoct together until ten boils occur. Bathe the infant in the warm liquid, but do not bathe the back.
The formula is seen in the section on "Kou Mi Qixing Chuang" (Oral Deer Seven-Star Rash) mentioned previously.
There are cases where an infant is born with a lack of luster below, thin muscles, white stool, body lacking blood color, eyes lacking brilliance, frequent choking breaths, and much hiccups. This is called Taiqie (Fetal Frailty). It either results from parents conceiving at an advanced age, or from a pregnant woman who has had many births. At the time of conception, the Yuanqi (Original Qi) was already depleted. After conception, it is difficult for Qi and Blood to nourish and grow, leading to frailty upon birth. If postnatal care is appropriate, one or two out of ten may be saved. Therefore, infants born with red faces and prominent black pupils have Taishi (Fetal Solidity). Infants born with yellow faces and prominent white sclerae have Taiqie (Fetal Frailty).
Shanyao, Fuling, Juhong, Renshen, Baizhu (stir-fried), Danggui (stir-fried), Gancao (honey-roasted), Gouqi (each 2 qian), Chendongmi (3 he). Grind into powder. Each time, take with Longyan Tang (Longan Decoction).
Tian Jing (Heavenly Convulsion) is caused by the wet nurse drinking excessively or having excessive sexual desires, allowing foul and toxic Qi to enter the milk. This causes heat in the Heart and Lung, phlegm obstruction, and Qi stagnation, preventing free flow. Additionally, external Wind pathogen invades, and internal heat cannot vent outward, resulting in this syndrome. Its manifestations include rolling eyes, convulsions of hands and feet, crying or laughing intermittently, irregular emotions, palpitations with high fever, upward turning of both eyes, dry and scorched lips. In severe cases, fingernails turn blue, resembling possession. The pulse is floating, solid, and surging. Frequent yawning at the onset can verify this. The syndrome belongs to Yang; treatment should resolve Wind-Heat to achieve recovery. It is named Tian Jing because the eyes look upward.
When Qi is harmonious, it is the cause of smooth ascent and descent and peace; when Qi rebels, it is the beginning of stagnation and disease. Children with Pan Chang (Coiled Intestine) do not acquire it suddenly. It is all due to long-term Qi stagnation, Ying (Nutritive) congestion, and Wei (Defensive) knotting. None of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs are relaxed. The Qi attacks when empty, failing to move up and down, lodging tightly between the stomach and intestines, striking the heart causing pain. Qi pierces and rushes, hidden above the navel, shaped like a snake, making rattling sounds continuously, like a cat vomiting filth. Dry crying with open mouth, cold hands and feet, intestinal stagnation, frequent urination, dry upper lip, profuse head sweat, blue or black face, curved head and waist, refusal to suckle, abdominal pain with eyebrow movement, or occasional lethargy. Profuse sweating due to Qi deficiency, even fingernails turning blue-black. However, this syndrome can result from delayed bathing after birth, contracting cold, with cold Qi hiding in the intestines and battling in the small intestine; or during the mother's pregnancy, sorrow and worry cause Heart Qi to knot, affecting the fetus; upon birth, slight cold contraction combines with Qi to form it. There are also Yin and Yang syndromes: Yin presents as curled body and green frothy stool; Yang presents as writhing body, loud crying, green stool, dry crying without tears, passing gas with bowel sounds. If the two syndromes alternate, it is half-Yin half-Yang. Treatment should soothe Qi, transform phlegm, and use warming and dispersing methods. Books also say: Males are named Chang (Intestine), females are named Pan Chang (Coiled Intestine), all caused by Qi stagnation. If the whole body is ice-cold, lips and face tremble blue, abdomen distended with dry crying, stabbing pain near the heart, black fingernails, cold Qi with profuse sweating, death occurs. Furthermore, there is Nei Jing (Internal Convulsion): abdominal pain, frequent crying, black lips, scrotal swelling, green stool with sweating, biting breast with drooling, stooping and opisthotonos, abdominal distension with staring eyes, Tiger Mouth pulse thread entering the palm, red vein spots and blood in the eyes, resembling Jing Hou (Convulsion Syndrome). There are also Yin and Yang distinctions: Yin arises after vomiting, with weak Stomach Qi, mental confusion, restlessness, twitching of hands and feet, crying lethargically; Yang arises with body fever, palpitations and loud crying, mental trance, sleeping or waking intermittently, salivary rattling and rough breathing, tidal convulsions of hands and feet, startled crying. Although books say Tian Jing belongs to Yang and Nei Jing belongs to Yin, essentially neither is a pure Yang syndrome. Comparing the two, they specifically refer to Yang within Yin. Treatment methods do not exceed warming the Zang organs, calming fright, soothing Qi, and transforming phlegm. These syndromes' manifestations are similar and easily confused. For example, Nei Jing is caused by Cold pathogen stagnation combined with Wind-Convulsion, thus easily resembling Convulsion Syndrome. Only red silk spots and blood in the eyes can verify it. Pan Chang most resembles insect pain, but forehead has sweat, waist is curved with dry crying; insect pain must involve vomiting clear froth, pain comes and goes, dry crying follows crying, nose tip and lips are dark. Pan Chang Nei Jing is mostly due to the fetus contracting cold, causing the infant to cry at night. Since Yin is dominant at night, extreme Yin causes restlessness, extreme cold causes pain, hence the crying.
