(Mimenghua) It is generated by inheriting the Qi of Earth. Its flower buds sprout in winter and bloom in spring; therefore, its flavor is slightly sweet and cold, its nature is neutral, it is non-toxic, and it is a specific medicine for diseases of the Jueyin Liver channel.
The liver opens into the eyes, and the eyes can see only when nourished by blood. If deficient, one may experience blurred vision, floaters, or corneal opacities (pterygium/leukoma); if heat is severe, there will be redness and swelling of the eyes, discharge, tearing, red vessels in the eye, as well as residual toxins from smallpox in children, Gan syndrome attacking the eyes. This herb's sweetness can nourish blood, and its coldness can clear heat. Once Liver blood is sufficient, all these symptoms will heal. However, its flavor and Qi are thin; when assisted by blood-nourishing herbs, its efficacy is enhanced.
Mimenghua specifically enters the Liver channel, clears heat, nourishes Ying (Nutritive) level, removes ocular opacities and blindness (qingmang), reduces discharge, tearing, redness, and photophobia, eliminates red vessels, treats internal turbidity obstructing the pupil, external obstruction due to carbuncle toxins invading the back, Gan syndrome attacking the eyes, smallpox toxins attacking the eyes, photophobia, red swollen eyes with excessive tearing, achieving miraculous effects for all these conditions.
Indications (referencing *Douzhen Hecan*): Efficacy as mentioned above. To treat post-smallpox ocular opacities, redness, and dryness, select clean flowers, steam them with wine and honey, sun-dry, and use. Since its flavor and Qi are thin, it must be combined with blood-tonifying herbs for optimal results.
(Qilinjie) It inherits the Qi of Earth and undergoes water transformation. It inherits the Qi of Mars (Yinghuo) and condenses in the Yin of Tangshi. Its color is red like fire, and its taste is sweet and salty, thus obtaining Yin Qi to enrich blood. Produced in foreign lands, genuine specimens are rare. The best quality is that which, when ground, penetrates the fingernail, and when burned to ash, does not change color. It enters the blood aspect of the Foot Jueyin Liver channel and Hand Shaoyin Heart channel. Sweetness primarily tonifies, and saltiness primarily dissipates; thus, it is an essential herb for resolving blood stasis, generating new blood, and relieving pain.
Qilinjie, also known as Xuejie (Dragon's Blood). It treats traumatic injuries from falls and blows, heals malignant sores and abscesses, breaks up accumulated blood and draws out pus, expels pathogenic factors and relieves pain, treats leukorrhea and metal wounds, promotes flesh growth. It can be made into plasters for application or mixed with wine for oral administration.
Indications (referencing *Douzhen Hecan*): Treats all malignant sores caused by pathogenic Qi in the five zang organs, relieves pain, promotes flesh growth, and is used in treating smallpox to invigorate blood.
Note: Rushingxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh) treat both Qi and Blood, whereas this herb acts specifically on the Blood aspect. It is good at closing wound openings yet guides pus out. However, its nature is urgent/intense and should not be overused. It is unnecessary for blood diseases without stasis accumulation.
(Longnaoxiang) It is generated by inheriting the Qi of Fire and Metal; therefore, its taste is pungent and bitter, its nature is warm and hot, and it is non-toxic. Its nature is good at penetrating and circulating, reaching everywhere through opening orifices. Its aromatic fragrance can repel all evil influences, and its pungent-hot nature can disperse all wind-dampness. Pungent-warmness governs dispersion, guiding fiery-heat Qi outward, thereby improving hearing and vision.
Longnaoxiang (Borneol): Mixed into ointments to apply to eyes for heat-induced redness and pain; ground into powder and insufflated into the throat for sore-throat swelling and blockage. If the tongue swells and protrudes outside the mouth, applying it frequently allows it to retract spontaneously. For Gan toxins growing in ducts, frequent oral administration leads to self-healing. It also treats pediatric blood-heat, black depression of smallpox lesions, mental restlessness, mania, and delirious speech. These are processed into pills with pig heart blood, taken after dissolving in a strong decoction of Zicao Rong (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma). It effectively promotes eruption and calms the spirit. However, Longnaoxiang is pungent, hot, light, and floating, prone to volatilizing. It can deplete Yuan Yang and scatter Yin Qi. Furthermore, Borneol entering the bone is like wind; it is suitable for diseases located in the marrow. If wind is in the blood vessels and muscles, using Borneol and Moschus instead draws the wind into the bones, like oil mixing with flour, impossible to separate. For Spleen deficiency leading to slow convulsions, or dual deficiency of Liver and Kidney, especially for eye diseases, it should be strictly contraindicated.
Indications (referencing *Douzhen Hecan*): Pungent, bitter, and warm-natured, belonging to Yang. For cases where smallpox heat is extreme, accompanied by delirious speech, fearfulness, chasing, unconsciousness, hallucinations of ghosts/gods, phlegm obstruction preventing smallpox eruption, 1-2 li should be used. Formed into pills with pig tail blood and administered with Zicao decoction. Within a short time, the spirit settles, sleep ensues, and the rash erupts again.
