Ulmus cortex (Yupi) eliminates the five types of strangury (Lin syndrome, characterized by frequent, painful, and difficult urination), unblocks water passages, suppresses the dryness and toxicity of Dan Shi (mineral pills used in Daoist alchemy), lubricates joints, is applied externally to treat red swelling, and can induce abortion. The mucus from its bark applied externally treats tinea (ringworm/fungal skin infections) and kills parasites, resulting in immediate cure.
Born from the yin qi within trees, it tastes bitter and pungent, has a neutral nature, and is non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It specifically treats internal invasion of damp-heat and external infiltration of Yangming pathogenic factors into muscles.
Saposhnikovia root (Haitongpi) stops cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea (Huoluan), treats chronic dysentery with red and white discharge, eliminates malnutrition-related conditions (Gan accumulation), scabies, tinea, and dental worms. Soaked in wine and taken internally, it is highly effective for treating wind-jue (limb coldness and syncope due to wind pathogens). Washed with its decoction, it is effective for red eye diseases. It removes the harm of wind-dampness and regulates pain in the feet and knees.
Born from the spring yang qi, it tastes pungent, has a warm nature, and is non-toxic. Its qi is pure and fragrant, its taste is light and dispersing; it is floating and ascending, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its pungent-warm, ascending, and floating properties can expel wind pathogens from the head, face, muscles, and skin/hair. When wind is expelled, dampness is removed; externally, it requires sweating to release the exterior; internally, parasites are naturally eliminated.
Xinyi (Magnolia bud), when used, should have its stamen and hairs removed. It stops wind-pain in the head and facial swelling, relieves radiating toothache and dizziness, eliminates alternating chills and fever, treats nasal congestion causing loss of smell, promotes hair growth, kills parasites, stops clear rhinorrhea, and unblocks orifices. Xinyi is pungent, warm, and light-floating; it assists the ascending of clear yang qi to reach the heavens, thus treating diseases of the head, face, teeth, and nose.
Born from earth qi, its taste is sweet, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. The Heart is the sovereign official; Wood harmonizes Earth, serving as the mother of all things; it nourishes the five zang organs. If Spleen qi is deficient, the five zang organs become unsettled. If Heart qi is dry and urgent, one becomes depressed and worried about matters. Sweet taste primarily tonifies the Spleen; when the Spleen is solid, the five zang organs are naturally at peace. Sweet taste can moderate Heart qi; when moderated, the spirit flows freely, bringing joy. Without worry, awareness is round and thorough, desires are fulfilled, yin becomes strong, and vision becomes clear.
Hehuan (Albizia bark/leaves), also known as Jiaozhi Tree. Harvest the bark and leaves. It benefits the mind/spirit, tonifies yin, calms the five zang organs, improves vision, makes people feel that everything goes as desired, and brings constant peace and joy without worry.
Born from earth qi, its taste is sweet and bitter, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. Sweet taste enters the Spleen and nourishes blood, so it mainly treats fractures and tendon injuries. Bitter and cool properties dispel wind-heat, so it can be used for wind-pruritus as a medicinal bath decoction. *Qianjin Fang* uses it for traumatic bruising and blood stasis, as well as postpartum lochia retention, any condition where blood does not flow or flows excessively. All are taken as a boiled decoction. This utilizes its sweet taste to nourish blood, and within the action of reconnecting severed tissues, there is the meaning of bitter-draining and descending.
Jiegu Mu (Sambucus twig), also known as Moshucong, specializes in reconnecting tendons and bones, having life-restoring power. For frequent fractures/injuries, soak in wine and swallow. For wind-pruritus, it can be used as a bathing decoction. Boil twice; the efficacy remains the same. It also drives away various postpartum blood disorders and is frequently used in gynecological prescriptions. The leaves treat malaria; only when vomiting is induced do the chills and fevers completely cease. Drink freshly crushed juice: seven leaves for adults, three for children. Root bark can also be collected and decocted. For phlegm-malaria and phlegm-fluids, vomiting removes them; for water distension and edema, diuresis eliminates them. Stop immediately upon seeing effects; do not finish the entire dose. Another variety called Zhesang Mu specializes in treating fractures and tendon injuries with great efficacy and instantly resolves postpartum bloody dysentery. Decoct with wine and water; usage is the same as above.
