Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, five liang, crushed with a wooden mallet, dried, and processed into powder) Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, ten liang, washed clean with water, dried, and processed into powder)
These two ingredients must not come into contact with iron vessels. Form into pills the size of a bullet using Hei Sha Tang (Black Rock Sugar). Take three pills daily, administered with Sha Tang Tang (Rock Sugar Decoction).
On the evening of the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month, boil one large Seven-Star Black Carp or two to three smaller ones to make a decoction. Use this decoction to bathe the infant's entire body. Ensure the liquid reaches the ears, nose, mouth, and all orifices. Do not rinse off the medicinal residue with plain water due to the fishy odor. If one doubts its efficacy or performs the washing incompletely—leaving one hand or foot unwashed—it will be verified that when smallpox erupts, the unwashed areas will have significantly more lesions.
Apply this method when the rash is about to emerge; severe cases may become mild. Every night before sleep, dip three fingers of the hand in Ma You (Sesame Oil) and rub the infant's forehead, vertex, back, waist, both wrists, and both ankles. Then allow the child to sleep. This follows the principle of promoting free flow, unblocking stagnation, and facilitating the emergence of pathogens.
Chan Dou Teng (Vitis Vinifera L. var. chinensis stem, shade-dried, four liang) Zi Cao Rong (Arnebiae Radix seu Cortex, four liang, washed with wine, avoid iron vessels) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, two liang) Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, two liang, stir-fried with salt water) Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, two liang) Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, two liang, stir-fried) Gan Cao Shao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma tip, two liang) Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, three liang) Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Concretio Silicea, one qian two fen) Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus, one qian two fen) Chan Su (Toad Venom, one qian two fen) Chi Dou (Adzuki Bean), Hei Dou (Black Soybean), Lv Dou (Mung Bean) (each forty-nine grains)
Process into a fine powder. Externally, use Zi Cao (Arnebiae Radix seu Cortex, three liang) with three bowls of water, decoct until half a bowl of paste remains. Add Ban Sha Tang (Raw Rock Sugar, half a zhan) and mix evenly. Combine with the aforementioned powder to form pills the size of Adzuki Beans. Coat these pills with Fei Guo Sha (Refined Cinnabar powder). Before the eruption of smallpox, decoct Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction) strongly, dissolve one pill in it, and administer. Adults take two pills. If fever has already occurred, dissolve the pill in Jiang Tang (Ginger Decoction) and administer, then cover thickly to induce sweating. For dense eruptions, reduce the dosage; for sparse eruptions, increase the dosage to promote eruption. If spots have already appeared densely, dissolving one pill in Gan Cao Tang can also alleviate symptoms, but do not overdose.
For treating smallpox where no spots have yet appeared: those who take more doses will have fewer lesions, and those who take fewer doses will have none.
Si Gua (Luffae Fructus Retinervia, three cun near the stem, burned together with peel and seeds until carbonized/stored nature, processed into powder) Zhu Sha (Refined Cinnabar powder, five fen)
Mix with Sha Tang (Rock Sugar) and swallow.
