Treats continuous spontaneous sweating, deficiency of Qi and weakness of the exterior, susceptibility to wind pathogens.
Huangqi (Zizhi Huangqi, Prepared Astragali Radix) [2 liang], Baizhu (Chao Baizhu, Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [2 liang], Fangfeng (Fangfeng, Saposhnikoviae Radix) [1 liang].
Huangqi tonifies Qi and specifically consolidates the muscular exterior, thus serving as the Sovereign herb; Baizhu benefits the Spleen, and the Spleen governs the muscles, thus serving as the Minister herb; Fangfeng dispels wind, acting as an attendant to wind-pathogens yet feared by Huangqi, thus serving as the Envoy herb. Because it benefits Wei-Qi and consolidates the exterior, it is named Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder). The efficacy of Huangqi is greatly enhanced when combined with Fangfeng, utilizing their mutual inhibition and mutual facilitation. In cases of stroke-induced hemiplegia, there is no condition not caused by the failure of True Qi to circulate throughout the body; therefore, Huangqi is an indispensable Sovereign herb, and Fangfeng is an indispensable Minister herb. Huangqi assists True Qi, while Fangfeng carries Huangqi to assist True Qi in circulating throughout the body, and also possesses the merit of treating wind disorders. Xu Yinzong treated Empress Dowager Wang's stroke with mouth lock by fumigating her with a decoction of these two herbs, resulting in recovery; how much more so if taken orally?
Treats damage to Yuan Qi due to overexertion, limb fatigue, Spleen and Lung deficiency, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, internal heat, and thirst.
Huangqi (Zizhi Huangqi, Prepared Astragali Radix) [1 qian], Renshen (Renshen, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Zhi Gancao, Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Danggui, Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Chao Baizhu, Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [each 5 fen], Shaoyao (Baishao, White Peony Root), Chaihu (Chaihu, Bupleuri Radix), Shengma (Shengma, Cimicifugae Rhizoma) [each 3 fen], Chenpi (Chenpi, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [2 fen], Wuweizi (Wuweizi, Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) [15 berries]. Decoct in water and take warm.
This formula is essentially Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Baishao and Wuweizi. Buzhong Yiqi Tang uses purely sweet and warm herbs to merely execute the ascending function of Spring Qi. Here, sour and astringent herbs are added to concurrently hold the descending authority of Autumn Qi. Qi deficiency leads to excessive dispersion, and sweating that does not stop is like the humid steaming of Summer Qi. Once the Metal/Shang energy sounds (referring to the descending nature of Autumn), the intense heat disappears. Generally, having both ascending and descending, being able to disperse and collect, allows Heaven and Earth Qi to communicate and all things to flourish smoothly. This represents Mr. Dongyuan's alternative path, expanding the subtleties of tonifying the middle!
Treats spontaneous sweating accompanied by physical weakness.
Huangqi (Mi Zhi Huangqi, Honey-fried Prepared Astragali Radix), Fangfeng (Fangfeng, Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shanzhuyu (Shanzhuyu, Corni Fructus), Danggui (Danggui, Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Chao Baizhu, Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Rougui (Rougui, Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Zhi Gancao, Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Wuweizi, Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Renshen (Renshen, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [each 1 liang], Baifuling (Baifuling, Poria), Shudihuang (Shudihuang, Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) [2 liang], Rongzhrong (Rongzhrong, Cistanche Deserticolae Herba) [1 liang]. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with Jujube water and take warm.
