Red Adzuki Bean: Born from the Qi of autumn dryness, it is sweet and sour in taste, with a hint of pungency, neutral in nature, and non-toxic. Its sweet and sour properties have the function of restraining rebellious Qi, while its pungent and neutral properties have the power to disperse damp-heat. Therefore, it is used to discharge pus, reduce swelling, treat distension and damp-bi, stop thirst and diarrhea, strengthen the spleen, and dry dampness. Its red color corresponds to the Heart; as a grain of the Heart, its nature moves downward, enters the Yin aspect, unblocks the Small Intestine, treats diseases with tangible accumulation, eliminates phlegm and disperses swelling. Even in cases where ulcers are nearly necrotic, applying it as powder externally yields immediate effect.
The Red Adzuki Bean has a downward-moving nature, unblocks the Small Intestine, and enters the Yin aspect. It treats chronic accumulations, drains water-Qi, dissipates swelling, stops vomiting, cures dysentery, and resolves heat-toxin. Decocted with *Morus Cortex* (Sangbaipi), it treats damp-bi causing swelling of the hands and feet. Boiled with live carp, it treats Spleen Qi deficiency manifesting as abdominal protrusion, promotes urination to remove distension, alleviates thirst, expels the placenta, and promotes lactation. However, long-term use causes dryness, emaciation, and increased body weight because it specializes in strengthening the Spleen and Stomach, moving fluids, eliminating water-dampness, and its descending action is too excessive.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): Excellent at promoting urination, dispersing toxin, discharging pus, relieving thirst, and stopping diarrhea. Children who have not yet developed rashes can consume it regularly. If rashes erupt with thirst, decocting this for drinking is also effective.
Green Mung Bean: Endowed with the Yin Qi of Earth, it is sweet in taste, cold in nature, and non-toxic. It enters the Foot Yangming Meridian. With its sweet-cold nature, it can resolve toxins from mineral drugs (Dan Shi) and all kinds of heat-toxins. It is used for polydipsia and vexatious heat, thickens the intestines and stomach, harmonizes the five Zang organs, moistens the skin, removes dampness, reduces swelling, benefits Qi, and clears heat. It is suitable for wind-rash, smallpox, and carbuncles, and supports deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach. It is contraindicated for those with slippery diarrhea.
The Green Mung Bean is sweet and cold, circulating through the twelve meridians. Decoction resolves alcohol toxicity and relieves vexatious heat. Applied as powder to swollen and painful areas, it treats erysipelas and alleviates discomfort, benefits Qi and strength, moistens the skin, promotes urination, clears Stomach heat, thickens the intestines and stomach, nourishes spirit, and harmonizes the five Zang organs. Regular consumption has no restrictions; drinking the juice resolves polydipsia, and it resolves toxins of hundred medicines as well as all carbuncles, swellings, and smallpox toxins with miraculous effect. Used as pillow stuffing for night sleep, it brightens the eyes and disperses wind, and conversely can remove corneal opacity, attributed to its cold nature. The flavor and nature acquired by Mung Bean Powder are the same as the bean itself: sweet, cool, non-toxic, cooling various heats, benefiting Qi, resolving alcohol and food toxins. It treats back carbuncles and burns/scalds.
Heart-Protecting Powder (also known as Internal-Supporting Powder or Frankincense Perfect-Preserving Powder): For any carbuncle disease, within one to thirteen days, it is advisable to administer more than ten doses continuously to prevent complications and allow toxin-Qi to exit outward. If taken slightly late, toxin-Qi attacks inward, gradually causing vomiting. Or if nasal sores appear and appetite is lost, the condition becomes critical. Between four and five days, intermittent administration is also appropriate. Use one tael of genuine Mung Bean Powder, half a tael of Frankincense (*Ruxiang*), and rush pith (*Dengxin*), grind them together evenly. Mix with a strong decoction of raw Licorice Root (*Gancao*), take one qian, sipping frequently. If toxin-Qi rushes to the Heart, presenting with nausea and vomiting, this formula is highly recommended, as Mung Bean repels heat and directs Qi downward, reducing swelling and detoxifying; Frankincense dissipates various carbuncle toxins. When taken up to one tael, the fragrance penetrates the sore pores; truly a sacred medicine. (Another prescription adds two qian five fen of Cinnabar.) For pain from beating wounds, stir-fried and ground Mung Bean Powder mixed with egg white applied topically is excellent. Mung Bean Skin especially resolves heat-toxin and clears corneal opacity. Spirit-Unblocking Powder treats corneal opacity after variola/rash. Use equal parts of Mung Bean Skin, Chrysanthemum Flower (*Juhua*), and Eyebright (*Gujingcao*), grind into powder. Take one qian each time, boiled with one dried persimmon cake and one cup of millet wash until dry. Eat the persimmon, three times daily. Shallow cases resolve in five to seven days, deep cases in half a month, with great efficacy.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): Specifically resolves heat-toxin of smallpox pustules, internal vexatious heat and polydipsia from smallpox. Whenever smallpox heat-toxin is severe, especially in summer, or for children who have not yet developed smallpox/rashes, they can be boiled until soft and consumed without peeling the skin.
