If the pustules are vigorous all over the body but fail to rise on the head and face, death ensues. If there is pain in both the waist and abdomen, with purple spots all over the body resembling mosquito or flea bites, failing to swell entirely, or erupting as all purple blisters, death ensues. If the pustules are black and sunken all over the body, accompanied by restlessness and confusion, with spirit and qi becoming dim and disintegrating, death ensues. If the tops of the pustules are sunken and grayish-white, the patterns emerge from the sections, the roots show scattered blood, and are further complicated by diarrhea, irritability, thirst, white lips, phlegm rattle, and loss of appetite, this indicates exhaustion of both qi and blood, which is incurable. During the swelling stage, if the patient cries incessantly, groans day and night, is irritable and restless, speaks deliriously, is confused, and sees ghosts or spirits, it is incurable. If vomiting and diarrhea persist without stopping, milk and food remain undigested, or blood appears in both urine and stool, it is incurable. During the swelling stage, if six or seven red pustules coalesce into a mass, with one being larger, flat, broad, and tilted, it is incurable. However, if only one or two appear on the legs and feet, they may be pricked with a coarse silver needle and anointed with oil mixed with rouge. During the swelling stage, if the pustules appear shrouded like smoke, it is incurable. During the swelling stage, if the pustules on the hands and feet appear and disappear, rise and then collapse, this signifies that the root has been destroyed and the branches have withered first. If the pustules completely fail to swell and turn gray and sunken; or become purple, sunken, dry, and collapsed with a gloomy and unclear appearance; or erupt as water blisters that are itchy and collapse, these all indicate that blood has separated from qi, causing the toxin to sink inward, and external exfoliation occurs, which is incurable. If during the swelling stage, the color resembles white rice, is flat, weak, and fails to rise, death ensues. This is due to abundant toxin and stagnant blood, and should not be mistaken for a deficiency-cold syndrome. When the pustules are about to erupt, if blood blisters appear within, this indicates the toxin is hidden in the Heart, which is incurable. If water blisters appear, this indicates the toxin is hidden in the Liver, and the patient will inevitably die shortly after appearing itchy and weak. During the eruption stage, if the roots are too red, and the skin and flesh of the head and face are swollen and red like a melon, death occurs after seven days. If the tops of all pustules on the body are black, with eyes in the center like purple-black needle holes, death occurs after three days. If the cheeks are vacuously swollen into masses, and the shoulders, back, waist, and buttocks also form hard masses, death occurs after five days. If the initially erupted pustule shapes gradually disappear, death occurs within three days. At the initial emergence, if half are water blisters, or upon just erupting, they immediately carry white pus, or if they do not yet form pus but immediately dry up and retract, this indicates fiery nature is dry and urgent, arriving when it should not, emerging early and withering prematurely. It is always caused by toxic fire, and death occurs suddenly as the flame extinguishes and breath ceases. Whenever during the eruption stage, the pustules are dense and ulcerate. Chills and teeth grinding indicate the pathogen has transmitted to the Kidney. Confusion and disorder indicate the loss of spirit and qi. Coldness of the body indicates the escape of yang. Vomiting or diarrhea indicates the failure of both the stomach and intestines. The *Classic* states: "When the qi of the Five Zang organs fails internally, diarrhea persists without stopping; when the qi of the Six Fu organs fails externally, the hands and feet become cold." All symptoms mentioned above are untreatable.
