Treats Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) with sweating, where after recovery, Qi and Blood are not yet balanced. Labor aids heat, which returns to the channels and collaterals; or recurrence occurs due to sexual intercourse. If one who was previously healthy falls ill from this, it is called "Labor Recurrence" (Lao Fu). If due to intercourse, a healthy person contracts the disease, it is called "Yin-Yang Exchange" (Yin Yang Yi). I have seen many cases where the tongue protruded several inches leading to death. This condition is extremely difficult to treat and requires this decoction: Ren Shen (Ginseng), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Zhu Qing (Bamboo Sap), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome - double dose if testicular retraction and abdominal pain occur), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Hua Shi (Talcum), Sheng Di (Rehmannia Root), Jiu Gen (Chinese Chive Root), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Use substitute in modern practice*). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube). Before administration, mix in 1.5 qian of ash from burnt underwear. Take mixed with water. Effectiveness is indicated by sticky sweat. If no sticky sweat, take again. Cure when urine flows freely and swelling of the glans penis subsides.
Treats patients with headache, fever, stiffness of the neck and spine, aversion to cold, and absence of sweating. After two or three doses of diaphoretic herbs, if sweat still does not appear, and one fails to recognize this pattern, using heavy doses of Ma Huang (Ephedra Herba) or fire therapy to force sweating has caused much harm. This is because Yang Qi is deficient and cannot generate sweat, known as the "Non-Yang Syndrome" (Wu Yang Zheng). Prescription: Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, baked). Decoct 2 zhong of water with 2 jujubes until 1 zhong remains. Add 1 bunch of fried Bai Shao (White Peony Root), boil for three more boils, and take warm.
Treats patients with body heat but no headache, presenting with irritability, restlessness, and facial redness, unable to drink water. This indicates deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) with floating empty fire rising upward, known as "Dai Yang Syndrome" (Floating Yang Syndrome). Prescription: Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Cong Bai (Scallion White), Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube). Before administration, add 3 spoons of Tong Bian (Child's Urine) and take cold in one gulp.
Treats Spleen deficiency with pathogenic invasion, phlegm retention in the chest and diaphragm, and alternating chills and fever resembling malaria. Prescription: Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, ginger-processed), Huo Xiang (Pogostemon Herb), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, soaked in rice water, fried with bran), Chen Pi (Citrus Peel, each 1 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 0.5 qian). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) and take hot. Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) refers to Zhong Qi (Middle Qi). If Middle Qi is not harmonious, Water-Dampness does not move, leading to Phlegm formation and pathology. Cang Zhu, Hou Po, Chen Pi, and Gan Cao serve to remove stagnation in the Stomach Earth and restore balance. Huo Xiang assists in dispersing stagnant Qi throughout the body, while Ban Xia helps transform phlegm-fluids in the abdomen, allowing Zheng Qi to circulate and preventing pathogenic factors from invading. How precious can this be? Hence the name "Bu Huan Jin" (Unchanging Gold).
