Xu Xiushan, a commoner from Linhai named Bao, enjoyed cultivating flowers, particularly orchids and chrysanthemums. He grew over a hundred varieties. When they bloomed, the colors were vibrant and diverse. My late father often asked him for seeds, so Xu wrote a couplet to present to my father: "Eating plain rice, wearing coarse clothes, with family reunited in joy throughout the year; Accompanied by quiet orchids, facing fine chrysanthemums, flower branches brilliant filling the courtyard with fragrance." He also inscribed a poem on Xu's painting "Qin and Crane": "Vulgar people are not suitable companions; only cranes and qins accompany me. The mountain is empty with bright cool moonlight; the ancient pavilion has deep green shade. Its wings possess immortal bones; its seven strings all contain the heart of the Dao. Secluded living satisfies true appreciation; thus long cleansing the dusty襟 (chest/mind)."
Xu was proficient in medicine and treated patients without regard for remuneration. He once passed on secret formulas to me, which I tested with success. I append them here to benefit the world. For treating Toufeng (chronic headache), use Toufeng plaster, add a small amount of Caowu powder, and apply it. For treating toothache, use 5 qian of Beixixin (Radix Asari), 5 qian of Bohe (Herba Menthae), and 1.5 qian of Zhangnao (Borneolum Syntheticum). Place them in a copper pot, cover with a small bowl, seal tightly with paper paste and mud to prevent air leakage, and fumigate gently over warm fire until the medicinal vapor rises into the small bowl. Take out and apply to the painful area. For treating chronic non-healing ulcers from knife wounds, take glutinous rice before Qingming Festival, change water daily, soak until Guyu solar term, then dry in the sun, grind into powder, and apply externally. For treating burns, boil eggs, remove whites and keep yolks; remove membranes from lard. Mix these two ingredients in equal parts, pound evenly, and smear on the affected area.
(Bingzhang) Note: This formula for toothache is most effective for dental caries pain and can also treat wind-fire toothache. However, for toothache caused by deficiency fire flaming upward, characterized by floating and elongated tooth roots without external swelling, external application is ineffective; Yunnv Decoction (Jade Woman Decoction) is appropriate.
Among single-ingredient or simple formulas, those that are miraculously effective can be treasures for the world. My family possesses several inherited formulas that have repeatedly proven effective, saving many people. Fearing they might be lost to time, I record them specifically. [For] Pine resin (Songxiang), place in a cauldron with water, boil slowly over low heat until one stick of incense has burned out. Remove the pine resin (it must be placed in cold water to solidify, otherwise it remains sticky); change water and boil again. Repeat this process of changing water eight times, boiling for the duration of eight sticks of incense, until the toxicity of the pine resin is completely eliminated. Grind into extremely fine powder, mix with lard pounded until smooth, and spread onto paper plasters. The method involves folding long thin oil-paper into two frames; punch holes in one side, spread the medicine on the other, join the two sides enclosing the medicine inside, and paste the perforated side against the lesion. Bind with thread, keep dry, and allow exuded oil to heal naturally. For all types of scabies: Use 2.5 qian each of Binglang (Arecae Semen), Mubiezi (Semen Strychnos), Chuanshanjia (Scuta Manis), Xueyu (Colla Corii Corii), Xionghuang (Realgar), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Heipi (Arsenicum Nigrum), and Dafengzirou (Semen Jatrophae). Grind into extremely fine powder, add 7.5 liang of Tuliuhuang (Sulfur), melt together to form pills/ingots, grind with rapeseed oil, and apply three times daily. For bleeding gums, known as Yahong: Apply finely ground Yuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas) to the area. For all unknown swellings and toxins: Smoke the affected area with fresh Sangzhi (Ramulus Mori). For infantile scalp ulceration, known as Ran Tou: Use 1 qian Tongqing (Malachite), 1 qing Liqing (Bitumen), 1 qian Songxiang (Resina Pini), and 4 qian Bimazirou (Endocarpus Ricini). Pound together thoroughly. Spread the medicine on a piece of cloth sized to cover the lesion, and wrap the affected area. For traumatic injuries: Stir-fry Dongguazi (Semen Benincasae), grind into fine powder, take 3 qian mixed with warm wine, twice daily.
(Bingzhang) Note: Processing pine resin eight times treats damp sores. In *Yizong Jinjian* (Golden Mirror of Medicine) under Surgical Diseases, there is a method for nine-processed Pine Resin Plaster, adding green onion during processing, which is also suitable...
