Xiaoxuming Decoction (from *Qianjin Fang*) is a general formula for treating stroke.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove nodes and roots), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata with Honey (Zhigancao, 炙甘草), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁), Podocarpii Fructus (Fangji, 防己), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (each 1 qian), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) (5 fen, processed).
Add three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), two and a half cups of water. First decoct Mahuang until reduced to two cups, then add the remaining herbs, decoct until reduced to eight parts, and take orally.
Gujin Luyan Xuming Decoction: Treats wind-fei syndrome in stroke, characterized by the body's inability to control itself, inability to speak, mental confusion, and unawareness of pain locations. Or stiffness and spasms preventing turning over. This formula originates from the Appendix of *Jinkui Yaolue*.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (each 3 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (1.5 qian), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (13 plus one seed, take one-third).
Use three cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, take warm. It should induce slight sweating; cover the back lightly, sit leaning on a table, and recovery occurs when sweat appears. If no sweat, administer again without contraindications, avoiding exposure to wind. Also treats conditions where one can only lie prone, cannot sleep, has cough and rebellious qi, and edema of the face and eyes.
Sanhua Tang: Treats heat-stroke affecting the zang organs, characterized by constipation.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Qianghuo (Qianghuo, 羌活), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, 枳壳) (each 3 qian).
Use two cups of water, decoct until eight parts remain, take orally.
Xixian San: Treats stroke with locked jaw, and also treats single or double tonsillar swelling (tonsillitis).
Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) (6 seeds, each split into two pieces), Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Yazao, 牙皂) (3 qian, sliced), Alum (Mingfan, 明矾) (1 liang).
First dissolve the alum, then add the other two ingredients and mix well. Wait until the alum dries and becomes powder. Use 3 fen per dose, insufflate into the throat. For excessive phlegm, take 5 fen with Juncus Decoction (Dengxincao Tang, 灯心汤); if the phlegm is in the throat, it induces vomiting; if in the diaphragm, it induces purging.
Shenfu Decoction: For sudden collapse of primordial qi, this formula urgently restores yang and can save one or two out of ten patients.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) (1 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附uzi) (5 qian).
Use two and a half cups of water, decoct until eight parts remain, take orally. This decoction treats kidney qi collapse. Replace Renshen with Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) to name Zhufu Tang, treating spleen qi collapse; replace with Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) to name Qifu Tang, treating defensive qi collapse; replace with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) to name Guifu Tang, treating nutritive qi collapse.
Sansheng Yin: Treats cold-wind invading the zang organs, characterized by cold limbs and surging phlegm-saliva.
Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cruda (Shengwutou, 生乌头) (2 qian), Arisaematis Rhizoma Cruda (Shengnaxing, 生南星) (2 qian), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Cruda (Shengfuzi, 生附子) (3 qian), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香) (5 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (5 slices).
Use two cups of water, decoct until seven parts remain. Dr. Xue (Xue Ji) uses 1 liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), decocts in half a cup of water, and mixes to take orally.
Fangfeng Tongsheng San: Treats wind-heat apoplexy, where exterior meridians and limbs are affected internally, and internal zang-fu organs have blockage of bowel movements and urination. This formula resolves both exterior and interior. It is more appropriate than Sanhua Tang and is also a treatment method for excess fire in similar stroke cases. The use of exterior-releasing herbs follows the principle of "venting fire stagnation"; the use of purgative herbs follows the principle of "removing firewood from under the cauldron."
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi, 山栀), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Mirabilite (Mangxiao, 芒硝) (each 5 fen), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗) (each 1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (2 qian), Talcum (Huashi, 滑石) (3 qian).
Use two cups of water, add three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), decoct until eight parts remain, take orally. If there is spontaneous diarrhea, remove Mangxiao and Dahuang. If there is spontaneous sweating, remove Mahuang and add Guizhi. If there is phlegm-cough, add Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏) and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子).
Dihuang Yinzi: Treats similar stroke due to kidney deficiency with failing to anchor deficient fire, characterized by stiff tongue unable to speak and useless legs unable to walk. This is the treatment method for deficient fire in similar stroke.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang, 熟地), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志), Corni Fructus (Shanzhurou, 山茱肉), Morinda Officinalis Radix (Bajitian, 巴戟天), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子), Cistanches Herba (Roucongrong, 肉苁蓉) (washed), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 肉桂), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (each 3 qian).
Add seven leaves of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Boheye, 薄荷叶), two cups of water, decoct until eight parts remain, take orally. This method requires light decoction so that not all herbal flavors are fully extracted. Its nature is heavy and dense to suppress rebellious qi; its aroma is light and clear to quickly penetrate various orifices.
Buzhong Yiqi Tang: Treats damage to primordial qi caused by excessive labor or irregular diet, leading to qi deficiency and susceptibility to wind invasion. This is a qi-deficiency type of wind-stroke. There are also cases of qi-stroke caused by rebellion of the seven emotions, which should be treated with formulas like Yueju Wan.
Prepared Astragali Radix (Zhihuangqi, 炙黄芪) (2 qian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Chao Baizhu, 炒白术), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (each 1 qian), Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhigancao, 炙草), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) (each 5 fen), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (each 3 fen).
Add three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and two dates, two cups of water, decoct until eight parts remain, take orally.

Also called damp-stroke, as dampness generates phlegm. Add Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, 枳实), Areca Seed (Dan Nansxing, 胆南星), and Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru, 竹茹), named Ditang Tang.
Jiawei Liujunzi Tang: A mild and steady formula for treating stroke.
See formula in *Geshe* chapter.
Add 3 qian of Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬) as the sovereign herb, 1 qian of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) as the guide herb, and mix in 5 qian of Bamboo Juice (Zhuli, 竹沥) and 2 qian of Ginger Juice (Shengjiangzhi, 生姜汁) to circulate phlegm in the meridians. Long-term use leads to self-healing.
Zishou Jieyu Tang (created by Yu Jiayan): Treats stroke with spleen flaccidity, stiff tongue unable to speak, and hemiplegia. It shares the same intent as Dihuang Yinzi. However, Dihuang Yinzi focuses on the kidney, while this formula focuses on the spleen.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Zaoren, 枣仁) (each 2 qian), Antilope Cornu (Lingjiao, 羚角), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 肉桂) (each 8 fen), Qianghuo (Qianghuo, 羌活), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (each 5 fen).
Use two cups of water, decoct until eight parts remain, add 5 qian of Bamboo Juice (Zhuli, 竹沥) and 2.5 qian of Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi, 姜汁), take orally.

The above fourteen ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (about 8 fen) with wine. I usually take 1.5 qian, twice daily, mixed with warm wine. Avoid all fish, meat, and garlic. Prefer cold food for sixty days; heat will then subside.
Fengyin Tang (from *Jinkui Yaolue*): Clears heat-induced paralysis and epilepsy, treating adult wind-dragging and pediatric convulsive epilepsy, occurring dozens of times a day.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), Dragon Bone (Longgu, 龙骨) (each 1 liang), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) (1.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Ostrea Concha (Muli, 牡蛎) (each 1 liang), Hydrargyri Subsiliceum et Sulfuratum Rubrum (Han Shuishishi, 寒水石), Halloysit Rubrum (Chishizhi, 赤石脂), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Psilomelane (Zishiying, 紫石英), Halloysit Alba (Baishi, 白石脂) (each 3 liang).
