Liu'an Decoction (from Zhang Jingyue) treats cough caused by external contraction.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian), Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 2 qian, peeled and removed of tips), Baijiezi (Brassicae Semenis Albus, 1 qian, stir-fried and crushed).
Add seven slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct with water, and take orally. If the cold pathogen is severe, add Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 0.7 qian); in my practice, I always remove Baijiezi and add Wubeizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Xixin.
Xiaoqinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) treats all types of cough. The formula composition is seen in *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage). Modifications are made within the formula according to patterns of cold, heat, deficiency, and excess. Only Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Wubeizi (Schisandrae Fructus) should not be arbitrarily removed; those who study *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet) will know this naturally.
Jiajian Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) treats cough accompanied by fever.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 4 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 1.5 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 qian), Wubeizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 0.8 fen).
Use two and a half cups of water, decoct until one and a half cups remain, filter out the dregs, decoct again until eight fen remains, take warm, twice a day.
Wubeizi Tang (Schisandra Decoction, from *Qianjin Fang*) treats cough due to injury by dryness, with blood in sputum, pain radiating to the chest and hypochondrium, and dry, rough skin. Wubeizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 0.5 fen, crushed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ziwan (Asteris Radix), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Sanggenpi (Mori Cortex), each 1 qian; Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 qian); Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum, one pinch, referring to small red beans).
The above nine ingredients, decoct with water and take on an empty stomach. *Mizhi* suggests adding one spoonful of Baimi (White Honey). In my opinion: Chixiaodou can be replaced by Wubaidou (Dolichoris Semen, 5 qian), taken whole without crushing; this is most effective for clearing heat and tonifying the lung, but it is contraindicated in cases of alternating chills and fever. Removing Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum), and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and adding Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Mendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) is also excellent.
Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction, from *Qianjin Fang*) treats cough with hemoptysis, chest and diaphragm fullness, upward qi rebellion with emaciation, five-palm heat, thirst, and constipation following serious illness where fire-heat attacks the lung.
Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 2 qian, heart removed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Sanggenpi (Mori Cortex), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Ziwan (Asteris Radix), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), each 1 qian; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 0.7 fen); Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 fen); Wubeizi (Schisandrae Fructus, ten grains, crushed); Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, one slice).
The above eleven ingredients, decoct with water and take on an empty stomach.
