Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is universally applicable for treating various diseases in women.
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shudi Prepared Root (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae), Baishao White Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried with wine, each 3 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1.5 qian).
Add three cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take orally. If Zhixiangfu Processed Cyperi Rhizome (Processed Rhizoma Cyperi, crushed, 2 qian) and Zhigancao Honey-fried Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 1 qian) are added, the modifications are detailed in *Yixue Sanzijing* (Three Character Classic of Medicine).
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction)
This formula is recorded in the chapter on Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption).
Xiaoyao San (Free Wanderer Powder, attributed to Zhang Jingyue) Treats women suffering from excessive worry and depression, which damages the source of the Heart, Spleen, and the Chong and Ren vessels. Qi and blood gradually wither, leading progressively to irregular menstruation.
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Shaoyao Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae, 1.5 qian), Shudi Prepared Root (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, 5 qian), Zaoren Fried Sour Jujube Seed (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae Preparata, 2 qian), Fushen Poria with Hostwood (Poria Cocos cum Radice, 1.5 qian), Yuanzhi Polygala Root (Radix Polygalae, 0.5 qian), Chenpi Tangerine Peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 0.8 fen), Zhigancao Honey-fried Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 1 qian).
Add three cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take orally. For Qi deficiency, add Renshen Ginseng Root (Radix Ginseng); for menstrual stagnation with pain, add Xiangfu Cyperi Rhizome (Rhizoma Cyperi). (Note: Although this formula is mediocre and crude, it can nourish the dryness of the Yangming channel; therefore, it is appended here following popular custom. Raw Dihuang Rehmannia Root is preferable.)
Danggui San (Angelica Powder, from *Jinkui Yaolue*) Suitable for thin individuals with internal heat and restless fetus.
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Huangqin Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae), Shaoyao Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) (each 1 jin), Baizhu Atractylodes Rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 0.5 jin).
Grind together into powder. Take orally with wine, one fangcunbi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) per dose. Currently, use 1 qian, taken twice daily. Regular consumption during pregnancy facilitates easy delivery and ensures the fetus suffers no illness. It also treats various postpartum diseases.
Baizhu San (Atractylodes Powder, from *Jinkui Yaolue*) Suitable for obese, fair-skinned individuals with cold pathogens and restless fetus; this formula nourishes and secures the fetus.
Baizhu Atractylodes Rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Chuanjiao Sichuan Pepper Fruit (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Muli Oyster Shell (Concha Ostreae).
Grind into powder. Take orally with wine, one fangcunbi per dose. Currently, use 1 qian, taken three times daily and once at night. If bitter pain occurs, add Shaoyao Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae); if severe pain under the heart occurs, add Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong); if irritability, vomiting, pain, and anorexia occur, add Xixin Asarum Root (Radix et Rhizoma Asari) and Banxia Pinellia Tuber (Tuber Pinelliae Preparata) for administration, followed by vinegar grain juice. If there is still no relief, take wheat juice. If thirst arises subsequently, take barley juice. Even after recovery, do not discontinue use.
Baosheng Wuyou San (Preserve Life and Ensure Safety Powder) Before labor, women should take three liang doses beforehand to ensure natural and easy delivery. In cases of transverse or breech presentation where delivery is delayed for days, taking two or three doses yields miraculous effects.
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1.5 qian, washed with wine), Chuanbeimu Fritillaria Bulb (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii, 1 qian), Huangqi Astragalus Root (Radix Astragali, 0.8 fen, raw), Aiye Mugwort Leaf (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, 0.7 fen), Jiubaishao Wine-processed White Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Alba Preparata, 1.2 qian, 1 qian in winter), Tusizi Dodder Seed (Semen Cuscutae, 1.4 qian), Houpo Magnolia Bark (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, stir-fried with ginger juice, 0.7 fen), Jingjie Sui Schizonepeta Spike (Spica Schizonepetae, 0.8 fen), Zhiqiao Bitter Orange Fruit (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried, 0.6 fen), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 2.2 qian), Qianglive Notopterygium Rhizome (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Gancao Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae, each 0.5 fen).
Add three slices of Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), two cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take on an empty stomach.
This formula entirely employs the "supporting/expanding" method. Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), and Baishao White Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Alba) nourish blood and invigorate blood circulation; Houpo Magnolia Bark (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) removes blood stasis. Using them expands the blood vessels so that lochia does not become obstructed. Qianglive Notopterygium Rhizome (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) and Jingjie Sui Schizonepeta Spike (Spica Schizonepetae) unblock the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, providing support from the back. Since the Taiyang channel is the longest, governing the Taiyang channel governs all other channels. Zhiqiao Bitter Orange Fruit (Fructus Aurantii) regulates stagnant qi, providing support from the front, ensuring fetal qi is restrained without risk of obstruction. Aiye Mugwort Leaf (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) warms the uterus; stimulating the uterus makes the fetus and membranes agile. Beimu Fritillaria Bulb (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii) and Tusizi Dodder Seed (Semen Cuscutae) best lubricate the fetus and smooth qi, supporting the entire fetal qi, imbuing it with natural vitality. Huangqi Astragalus Root (Radix Astragali) supports primordial Qi; when primordial Qi is robust, movement is powerful. Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) clarifies the spirit, eliminates turbidity, disperses cold, and stops vomiting, thereby supporting righteous Qi and stabilizing Stomach Qi. Gancao Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae) harmonizes the various herbs, ensuring mutual appropriateness, thus preserving the miraculous efficacy of the "supporting" method. Many people do not understand this formula; only Cheng Zhongling's annotation is exceptionally superior, so it is fully recorded.
Jiawei Guixiong Tang (Modified Angelica and Chuanxiong Decoction)
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 3 qian), Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 5 qian), Guiban Tortoise Shell (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, ground raw), Furen Dingmenfa Hair from the vertex of a woman who has given birth to a male or female infant (charred to the size of an egg).
Add three cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take orally. Delivery will occur within the time it takes a person to walk five li.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction)
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Huangqi Astragalus Root (Radix Astragali, honey-fried, 1 liang).
Decoct in water and take orally. Adding Fuzi Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 3 qian) yields miraculous effects; or adding Guizhi Cinnamon Twig (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 1 qian).
Shixiao San (Laughing Out Powder)
This formula is recorded in the chapter on Xin Xiong Tong (Heart and Abdominal Pain).
Shenghua Tang (Generate Transformation Decoction)
Danggui Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 5 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 2 qian), Jianggan Dried Ginger Rhizome (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, 0.5 fen, processed), Taoren Peach Seed (Semen Persicae, 1.5 qian, skin and tips removed), Gancao Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian, honey-fried).
Two cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take orally. For postpartum wind syndrome presenting with trismus (lockjaw) and opisthotonos (arched back), add Jingjie Sui Schizonepeta Spike (Spica Schizonepetae, 3 qian). Another prescription for stroke-induced trismus uses Huatuo Yufeng San (Master Hua’s Wind-Resolving Powder), which consists solely of Jingjie Sui Schizonepeta Spike (Spica Schizonepetae) roasted into powder (without burning black), administered with child’s urine and wine. If trismus prevents swallowing, use over one liang of the powder, decoct well with child’s urine, and instill through the nasal cavity.
Danggui Shengjiang Yangrou Tang (Angelica, Ginger, and Lamb Meat Decoction)
This formula is recorded in the chapter on Xin Xiong Tong (Heart and Abdominal Pain).
Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction, from *Jinkui Yaolue*) Treats postpartum wind-stroke presenting with spasm, fever, flushed face, wheezing, and headache.
Xianzhuye Fresh Bamboo Leaves (Folium Bambusae, 49 leaves), Gegen Kudzu Root (Radix Puerariae, 3 qian), Fangfeng Saposhnikovia Root (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 qian), Jiegeng Platycodon Root (Radix Platycodi), Guizhi Cinnamon Twig (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Renshen Ginseng Root (Radix Ginseng), Fuzi Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Gancao Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian), Dazao Chinese Jujube Fruit (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae, 5 pieces), Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 5 qian).
Three cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remains, take warm, cover warmly to induce sweating, divided into three doses throughout day and night. For stiffness of head and neck, add Fuzi Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 0.5 fen), and skim off foam while decocting; for vomiting, add Banxia Pinellia Tuber (Tuber Pinelliae Preparata, 2 qian).
Commentary: For spontaneous sweating, remove Gegen Kudzu Root (Radix Puerariae) and add Gualougen Trichosanthes Root (Radix Trichosanthis, 3 qian) and Fuzi Prepared Aconite Lateral Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 0.5 fen). Postpartum spasm syndrome is curable in only one out of ten cases; apart from this formula, there is no other excellent prescription.
Ganmai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction)
Gancao Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 qian), Xiaomai Common Wheat Grain (Fructus Tritici aestivi, 2 liang 6 qian), Dazao Chinese Jujube Fruit (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae, 10 pieces).
Three cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, and take orally, divided into three doses daily.
Only five formulas from *Jinkui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) are recorded here. The rest can be found in my works *Jinkui Qianshuo* (Brief Explanation of the Golden Cabinet) and *Jinkui Du* (Reading the Golden Cabinet). These two books are about to be printed, but due to limited space, they cannot be fully included.
