Shengyang Sanhuo Tang (Ascending Yang and Dispersing Fire Decoction): Treats fever in the limbs of both men and women, heat in the skin and muscles, heat due to Bi syndrome of tendons and vessels, and a sensation of heat deep within the bone marrow as if burning, which feels hot to the touch. The limbs belong to the Spleen; the Spleen corresponds to Earth. Heat is latent within the earth (the interior). This condition often arises from blood deficiency or from excessive consumption of cold foods due to weak Stomach Qi, which suppresses Yang Qi within the Spleen-Earth. According to the principle "when fire is constrained, disperse it," this prescription acts on the Stomach, Gallbladder, Spleen, Lung, and Bladder meridians. Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Gegen (Radix Puerariae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) each 5 fen; Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) 2.5 fen; Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 8 fen; Zhigancao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 fen; Shenggancao (Raw Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 fen. Decoct with water and take orally.
Shengyang Tang (Ascending Yang Decoction): Treats bowel movements three to four times daily, with loose stools but not large in volume, occasional diarrhea, borborygmus (abdominal rumbling), and yellow urine. Ingredients: Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) each 3 fen; Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 6 fen; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2 qian; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 3 qian; Honghua (Flos Carthami) a small amount. Decoct with water and take warm.
Huoyu Tang (Fire-Constrained Decoction): Treats heat sensation in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Gegen (Radix Puerariae), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each 1.5 qian; Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each 1 qian. Decoct with Congbai (White part of Allium fistulosum) and take orally.
Xie Yinhuo Shengyang Tang (Draining Yin-Fire and Ascending Yang Decoction): Treats heat in the skin and muscles, irritability and fever, flushed face, poor appetite, asthma, cough, and profuse sputum. The pulse at the right Guan position is slow and weak, wiry, or floating and rapid. Ingredients: Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis) each 1 qian; Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 8 fen; Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 1.5 qian; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) each 7 fen; Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) stir-fried with wine, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) each 5 fen. Do not use in late autumn. Decoct with water and take orally. Note: This is a formula for dispersing fire pathogens of the Spleen and Stomach, and also acts on the Heart, Gallbladder, Liver, Lung, and Bladder meridians. Its function is to drain Yin-fire, ascend and generate Yang Qi, and nourish Qi and Blood.
Shengyang Chushi Tang (Ascending Yang and Dampness-Dispersing Decoction): Treats Spleen and Stomach weakness, lack of appetite, borborygmus and abdominal pain, unceasing diarrhea, yellow urine, and heaviness and weakness in the limbs. Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Zhuling (Polyporus) each 5 fen; Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis) 1 qian; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) each 3 fen. Decoct with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Fructus Jujubae) and take orally. If accompanied by Stomach cold and borborygmus, add Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae); do not use these if borborygmus is absent.
Shengyang Chushi Fangfeng Tang (Ascending Yang, Dampness-Dispersing, and Saposhnikovia Decoction): Treats fecal impaction or constipation. Or presents with tenesmus (urgent desire to defecate with heavy sensation in the anus), frequent trips to the toilet without successful defecation, or passage of white pus or blood. Do not use purgatives; purging will worsen the constraint and obstruction. By raising Yang Qi, Yin Qi will naturally descend. If diarrhea and dysentery result from Spleen dampness flowing downward into the Liver and Kidneys, this formula should be used to tonify, ascend, and lift. Do not use draining or purging methods. If the pulse is excess and the abdomen is distended with complete obstruction, temporarily use formulas with more bitter than sweet flavors to drain. Ingredients: Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis) 4 liang, Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) 2 qian, Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Baifuling (Poria), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each 1 qian. Use two and a half zhong of water. First decoct Cangzhu until reduced to two zhong, then add the other herbs, and continue decocting until reduced to one zhong. Take warm on an empty stomach.
