Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction): Treats deficiency-induced fever with irritability, a large and empty pulse, neck pain or aversion to cold with thirst, spontaneous sweating with weakness, and qi rebellion with asthma caused by physical and mental overexertion and irregular diet. It also treats irregular menstruation in women and unmarried girls. This is the major principle of "tonifying qi when blood is depleted" (bu xue tuo yi qi).
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian; add 0.5 qian if overexertion is severe), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove if chronic cough with fire in the lung), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian; these three herbs are sacred remedies for clearing heat from the muscle layer and dryness-heat), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (harmonizes blood), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (assists the spleen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (directs qi, and when combined with sweet herbs tonifies primordial qi; used alone it drains spleen qi), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (guides the clear qi of Shaoyang to ascend leftward, greatly eliminating fatigue-related heat), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (guides stomach qi to ascend rightward and return to its original position. When used with Chaihu, stir-fry each with wine three times. If there is cough and sweating, stir-fry with honey to astringe and descend qi. Each of these five herbs uses 0.5 qian; if extremely deficient, use only 0.1 qian of Shengma and Chaihu; if sweating is profuse, remove them completely. Renshen, Huangqi, and Baizhu may be used up to 1 liang per dose; Gancao up to 2-3 qian per dose. Decoct in water and take warm at Si, Wei, or early Wu hours. For severe cases, administer two doses consecutively; recovery occurs with slight sweating. Avoid excessive talking and overexertion; rest quietly for 1-2 shichen before consuming nutritious food to assist recovery. For long-term use, remove Shengma and Chaihu, add Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) 0.3 qian to nourish kidney water, and Honghua (Carthami Flos) 0.2 qian to nourish heart blood; excessive use breaks blood.)
Jiawei Huangqi Tang (Modified Astragalus Decoction): Also known as Baoyuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction). Treats aversion to cold on the back due to yang deficiency. It is the previous formula minus Shengma, Chaihu, Chenpi, and Danggui, plus Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and, in severe cases, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Sheng Yang Shun Qi Tang (Raise Yang and Smooth Qi Decoction): Treats tastelessness in spring, feeling cold despite heat in summer, abdominal and hypochondriac fullness/stuffiness with shortness of breath due to irregular eating, qi stagnation from excessive worry/thought, and qi sinking from fear. It is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang minus Baizhu, plus Huangbai, Caodoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma).
Huangqi Renshen Tang (Astragalus and Ginseng Decoction): Treats insufficient spirit and flaccidity of both legs, irritability, vomiting/hiccups, spontaneous sweating, headache, phlegm-cough, heart/hypochondriac pain, chest oppression, frequent urination, and difficult/constipated stool during hot summers, all caused by heat injuring the lung. Suitable for regular use. It is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang minus Chaihu, plus Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shenqu, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), and Huangbai.
Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang (Clear Summerheat and Augment Qi Decoction): Treats lethargy of limbs, low spirit, reluctance to move, chest fullness, shortness of breath, joint pain, qi rebellion with asthma, fever with irritability, epigastric distension/oppression, yellow/frequent urine, loose/frequent stool, dysentery, thirst, anorexia, spontaneous sweating, and heavy body caused by damp-heat steaming during late summer. It is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang minus Chaihu; Huangqi (1 qian) stops sweat and clears heat; Renshen (0.5 qian), Danggui and Gancao (each 0.3 qian) tonify middle and augment qi; Cangzhu (1 qian), Baizhu and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 0.5 qian) promote urination to drain dampness; Shengma (1 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (0.2 qian) resolve muscle-layer heat; wind overcomes dampness, and dampness causes indigestion and fullness, so Chao Shenqu (0.5 qian), Qingpi (Tangerine Green Peel, 0.2 qian), and Chenpi (0.5 qian) digest food and move qi; the kidney dislikes dryness, so Huangbai (0.3 qian) uses sweet flavor to drain heat and replenish fluids; for deficiency, nourish the source using Wuweizi (9 grains) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (0.3 qian) to rescue lung metal injured by summerheat. The disease is in the middle jiao; sweating, purging, and warm needling are contraindicated.
Sheng Yang Bu Wei Tang (Raise Yang and Tonify Stomach Decoction): Treats damp-heat in late summer and bleeding from the Yangming and Shaoyang channels. It is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang minus Chenpi, plus Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gegen, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex).
Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang (Raise Yang and Benefit Stomach Decoction): Treats dryness in autumn with declining damp-heat, heavy body and joint pain, dry mouth/tongue, tasteless food, irregular stool, frequent urination, and indigestion. Accompanied by lung disease symptoms: chills, depression, and disharmonious complexion due to unextended yang. Huangqi (2 qian), Renshen and Gancao (each 1 qian), Baizhu (0.3 qian), Chenpi (0.4 qian), Chaihu (0.3 qian), plus Qianghuo, Duhuo, and Fangfeng (each 0.5 qian); since metal is prosperous in autumn, use pungent-warm herbs to drain it; Baifu Ling (Poria) and Zexie (each 0.3 qian), omit if thirsty; Banxia (1 qian), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (0.1 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (0.5 qian), decoct with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus). If urination ceases but illness worsens, remove Fuling and Zexie. Why tonify with Renshen, Baizhu, and Shaoyao when metal is prosperous? Spleen/stomach deficiency allows pathogen to affect the lung, so seasonal tonification is effective. Do not overeat; avoid foods that damage medicinal efficacy. Remain quiet, reduce physical activity to allow stomach qi and medicine to transform and ascend. Once stomach qi strengthens, eat small amounts of fruit to assist. The Classic states: "Five grains nourish, five fruits assist."
Shenjing Fuqi Tang (Divine Holy Replenishing Qi Decoction): Treats cold invading Winter Taiyang bladder and Shaoyin kidney waters. Since the child makes the mother full, Taiyin lung becomes excess and insults Earth, affecting Fire and Wood. Symptoms include blockage/pain in lower back/chest/diaphragm, sneezing, salivation, tearing, turbid nasal discharge or loss of smell due to polyps, cough with sputum, upper body heat like fire, lower body cold like ice, paroxysmal headache, eyes flowing fire, blurred vision, tinnitus/deafness, dizziness/bad breath; aversion to wind/cold, preference for sunlight, restless sleep, sensation of phlegm blocking throat, loss of taste, tight/painful hypochondrium, loose teeth unable to chew, genital sweating/cold, walking difficulty, palm cold, wind-bi numbness, frequent urination (day/night), yawning/shortness of breath/thirst, insufficient qi, incontinence, leukorrhea, vaginal pain radiating to heart, reddish face, poor appetite/irregular stool, irritability/vomiting/rebellious qi, tenesmus with white abdominal skin, inability to strain after passing gas; borborygmus, tight tendons below knees, severe scapular pain. These are cold/water/wood retaliating against fire/earth. Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) (0.3 qian), Banxia (0.6 qian), Chaihu (1 qian), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma) (0.8 qian), Fangfeng, Renshen, Yuliren (Pruni Semen) (each 0.5 qian), Shengma (0.7 qian), Fuzi (0.2 qian), Danggui (0.6 qian), Qianghuo (1 qian), Gancao (0.8 qian), Bai Kuihua (White Chrysanthemum Flower) (5 flowers, remove center), decoct 5 zhong water to 2 zhong; add Huangqi and Caodoukou (each 1 qian), Chenpi (0.5 qian), decoct to 1 zhong; add Huanglian, Huangbai (wine-washed), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Shengdi (each 0.3 qian). So these four herbs one day prior in water. Separately soak Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (0.2 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Manjingzi (Viticis Semen) (each 0.3 qian) in half zhong water for one day. Combine with Huangbai etc., decoct main medicine to 1 zhong, do not filter, add soaked liquid, decoct to 1 large zhong, filter, take warm on empty stomach. Also treats biting cheek/tongue/lip, stiff tongue. Eat meat broth, not meat, to avoid aiding fire in meridians.
