To remove corneal opacities (翳障) from the eyes, apply medication to the nose to stop epistaxis (鼻衄), and take the ash mixed with water orally to treat retention of urine (转胞), stranguria (淋证), urinary obstruction (闭证), and hematuria (尿血). Using materials from pregnant women or oneself yields effective results.
Human placenta, also known as Ziheche (Purple River Cartilage), is formed from male essence and female blood. It is sweet in taste and warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats emaciation due to Qi and Blood deficiency, labor damage in women, dark complexion, and gradual emaciation caused by various internal abdominal diseases. For male patients, use the placenta of a male fetus; for female patients, use that of a female fetus, with the firstborn being best. If unavailable, the placenta of a robust woman may be used. Wash it four or five times with rice water, ensuring not to break the fascia. Remove grass debris, place it in a bamboo container, and soak it in running water for one quarter-hour to absorb vital energy. Then, steam it until mushy using a clay pot inside a wooden steamer, or in a regular pot, from Mao hour to You hour. Take it out, place it in a stone mortar, and pound it together with other herbs into pills. Another method: After washing, add half a bowl of wine and a little Sichuan pepper into a clay pot, seal the mouth with paper, and dry slowly over low heat. A weight of 1.5 taels is ideal. Grind into powder for medicinal use. This medicine should not be stored for long, as it may cause intestinal parasites. Placentas buried in the ground for seven or eight years turning into clear liquid are pungent in taste and non-toxic. They treat pediatric erysipelas (Dan Du), epidemic febrile diseases, alternating chills and fever, delirium, manic speech, spontaneous hair erection, and deficiency bloating.
Red Lead (Hong Qian) refers to the menstrual blood of healthy virgin girls. It is salty in taste and toxic. It treats Qi and Blood weakness in men and women, rising phlegm-fire, deficiency syndromes, left-sided paralysis and right-sided limb dysfunction, stroke with aphasia, limb pain, poor appetite, and amenorrhea in women, showing miraculous effects. Method of collection: Forge black lead into a shell-shaped vessel resembling a yellow crown. When menstruation begins, place this vessel on the vulva to collect two or three bowls of blood. Pour it into a porcelain vessel. Let it settle; the red sediment at the bottom like cinnabar is the maternal Qi and true Yuan. Wipe away the yellow floating skin with paper. Mix the clarified part with Poria cocos (Fuling) evenly, form into thin cakes, dry in the shade, and grind into powder. Use decoction of Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) as a binder to make pills, coat with Cinnabar (Chensha), store in silver vessels, and take. Women's menstrual blood and laundry water can neutralize arrow poison and treat female labor jaundice. Horse blood entering wounds, or death from poisoning after being pierced by horse bones during skinning, can be treated effectively by applying menstrual blood. Recently, there are strange arts claiming invulnerability to swords, which fail only when menstrual blood is applied, causing death because filth destroys Shen Qi. Hence, ancient physicians avoided it in prescriptions. Male semen applied to traumatic bleeding stops hemorrhage; mixed with eagle droppings, it removes facial nevi and burns/scalds.
Dang (Crotch area), specifically the genital region about six inches square, treats Yin-Yang exchange disease in men and women. Men use women's, women use men's. Burn the material to ash, mix with water, and take orally. Jingyi (Menstrual cloth), i.e., cloth used to wipe menstrual blood, burned to ash and powdered, treats bites from tigers, wild wolves, etc. Taken with wine, it treats embedded arrowheads and Yin-Yang exchange disease.
The above methods involve "using humans to supplement humans," currently popular in custom. However, it is suggested that Qiushi (Processed Urine Stone) for restoring Yuan and reducing fire suffices; Ziheche and menstrual residues are merely post-natal dregs. Breast milk was used by ancients to nurse infants, yet they worried even about feeding hungry people's children. Moreover, boiling it into pills changes its pure Yin nature into a drying and acrid property. It may not necessarily tonify and is wasteful. Occasionally suitable for specific illnesses, temporary use or inclusion in prescriptions is acceptable. Checking Bencao (Materia Medica), Bieshuo states: Among human parts in Shennong's classification, only hair is listed; others appeared later from medical practitioners, ascetic practices, or bizarre theories, lacking benevolent intent. Sun Simiao is praised for great contributions, but killing life to save life incurs karmic blame, let alone such practices! Recently, doctors using Tianlinggai (Skull cap) for Transmitted Corpse Disease (Chuan Shi) have shown no efficacy. Trusting Benjing's exclusion of these is not harmful. Cruelty harming Shen is not urgent for quick results; if alternatives exist, benevolent persons should consider them. Those who disagree are misled by quacks. Alas! As a warning, some alchemists still advocate consuming whole dead fetuses or fluids from sexual intercourse of virgins and maidens. Wenjian Jixun records that those who consumed these died miserably and suffered strange disasters. Beware, beware!
