All wind-induced tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood.
All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire.
All dampness-induced edema and fullness belong to Spleen Earth.
All qi stagnation and flaccidity syndromes belong to Lung Metal.
All cold-induced contraction and pulling belong to Kidney Water.
Sudden stiffness, [pain in] limbs, muscle spasms, abdominal urgency, and tendon shortening all belong to Wind.
All diseases involving wheezing, vomiting, acid regurgitation, acute diarrhea with tenesmus, muscle cramps, turbid urine, abdominal distension with tympanic sound upon percussion, carbuncles, [ulcers], rashes, goiters, phlegm nodules, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, mental confusion and depression, swelling, nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea or epistaxis, various hemorrhages, strangury, fever, aversion to cold with shivering, fright, confusion, inappropriate laughter or crying, delirium, bloody discharge from nose or eyes, all belong to Heat.
All [spasmodic] stiffness, accumulation of fluids, chest and diaphragm obstruction, middle jiao fullness, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, heavy body, edema, flesh soft like mud that does not rise after pressure, all belong to Dampness.
All heat-induced mental confusion, sudden aphonia, dizziness and cloudiness of mind, restlessness, mania, cursing, fright, [generalized] swelling, pain and soreness, rebellious qi rushing upward, chills and trembling as if losing spiritual control, sneezing and vomiting, sores and ulcers, throat bi, tinnitus or deafness, violent vomiting, inability to eat, blurred vision, acute diarrhea, sudden death, all belong to Fire.
All astringency, dryness, and withered skin with cracking all belong to Dryness.
All water and fluid excretions from above and below that are clear, cold, [masses], hernias, fixed masses, abdominal fullness and urgent pain, dysentery with white and clear stool, lack of hunger after eating, vomiting with fishy odor, difficulty in flexion and extension, cold extremities, [rigid] contractions, all belong to Cold.
The diseases governed by the Five Movements (Wu Yun) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. When in harmony, they remain tranquil; when reversed, they become chaotic, causing abnormalities in the four seasons and excess of Yin or Yang, which is the source of disease.
All wind-induced tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood.
Annotation: "Diao" means shaking. "Xuan" means dizziness and vertigo. This is because Wind has the nature of movement. As stated, when Wind Qi is excessive, head and eyes become dizzy. This occurs because Liver Wood is prosperous, leading to insufficient Metal to control Wood. Wood generates Fire; both Wood and Fire are Yang, so Wind and Fire often transform together. When Wind and Heat combine, it causes dizziness and rotation. Fire's nature is movement; when Fire meets Wind, it becomes a rotating flame. Severe Wind causes bending and straightening movements, accompanied by vomiting.
All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire.
Annotation: Pain, itching, and the formation of sores are the functions of Fire. In the way of the Five Constants, when things reach an extreme, they are controlled by what overcomes them. Thus, when Fire-Heat is excessive, it assumes the transformation of Water. Just as salt preserves objects from rotting due to its salty-cold Water nature controlling Fire-Heat to prevent excess, this is Water controlling Fire to maintain stability. Extreme heat is generated by Wood generating Fire. When severe, the skin, flesh, and muscles cannot circulate freely, leading to sores with pain and itching.
All dampness-induced edema and fullness belong to Spleen Earth.
Annotation: Dampness is the substance of Earth. When Dampness is extreme, it causes obstruction, swelling, and fullness, just as objects do when wet. Therefore, during late summer when Summer-Heat and Dampness are excessive, all things flourish.
All qi stagnation and flaccidity syndromes belong to Lung Metal.
Annotation: The Lung governs Qi. Qi is Yang, and Yang is light, clear, and ascending, so the Lung resides in the upper part. Disease manifests as qi stagnation. As for flaccidity, weakness of the hands and feet and inability to grasp are due to blood deficiency. When Autumn Metal is prosperous, mist is dense, and plants wither and fall, which is the image of disease.
All cold-induced contraction and pulling belong to Kidney Water.
Annotation: Contraction and pulling are the functions of Cold. Hence, in winter cold, all things contract.
