How should the syndrome of numbness and insensitivity (Mabu Buren) be treated? One must understand Erchen Tang (Two-Chen Decoction) and Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction). This is always caused by damp-phlegm (Shitan) and dead blood stasis (Sixue). The method of invigorating blood and resolving phlegm should be tried first. For numbness in both arms, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) must not be omitted; for numbness in the lower body, Lingxian (Notopterygii Rhizoma) and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) are used. If it is due to Qi deficiency, Buyi Zhongqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) can be added. If blood deficiency is accompanied by phlegm and stasis, Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Taoren (Persicae Semen) should all be included.
If Ying-blood (Nutritive Blood) is deficient, and Liver Wind carries Phlegm, causing distending numbness at the fingertips, one may use Wei Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma prepared by baking), Yangling Pian (Saiga Tataricae Cornu sliced), Guizhi, Fuling (Poria), Danningxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Goutenggou (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
If it is due to Liver-Kidney deficiency, presenting with vertigo, tinnitus, palpitations, and numbness at the fingertips, one may use Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Xiqizi (Lycii Fructus), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Guizhi, Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), Yanglingjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu), Fushen (Poria cum Pinodia), Zhi Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum prepared), Muli (Ostreae Concha), and Guishen.
[Regarding] Baijili (Tribuli Fructus), Huma (Sesami Fructum), Hudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Baishao, Liaodoupi (Phaseoli Sarcotesta), Sangye (Mori Folium), and Chao Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus stir-fried).
Epilepsy (Xianzheng) may arise from fright or terror, or due to irregular diet, or from being startled in the mother's womb, leading to internal imbalance of the Five Viscera. After prolonged dysregulation, once accumulated phlegm is triggered, rebellious Qi and internal wind suddenly surge violently, uncontrollable, until the Qi calms down. Regarding the main treatment, it lies in distinguishing between deficiency and excess.
In epilepsy, when fainting occurs with salivation flowing, and the sound resembles that of livestock, this is the transmission of the Five Epilepsies. After waking, the body feels soft and weak; conversely, this is entirely due to Phlegm and Fright taking dominance. Fright causes the Spirit (Shen) to lose its residence; with the residence empty, Phlegm fills the Heart orifice. The Liver, Gallbladder, and Stomach meridians carry Phlegm-Fire, rising due to the convergence of the Three Yang meridians. Treatment focuses primarily on moving Phlegm, secondarily on clearing Heat. One may use Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu - note: substitute with Tapir Horn or Buffalo Horn in modern practice), Erchen Tang, plus Shichangpu, Danningxing, and Lian (Chuanlian, Coptidis Rhizoma). Also include Louqiao (Trichosanthis Fructus shell and peel), Ju (Ju Hong, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zhuli (Bambusae Sap), Fushen, Yujin (Curcumae Longae Radix), and Yuanzhi, decocted together.
If epilepsy is triggered by Fright-Terror and rising Phlegm-Fire, one may use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Guangpi (Chenpi, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Danningxing, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Yuanzhi, and Changpu.
If epilepsy-jue (syncope) arises from stagnant Yang blocking the orifices and obstructing collaterals, one may use Yanglingjiao, Chuanbai (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex), Jiang Banxia (Pinelliae Ternatae Rhizoma prepared with ginger), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chen Danningxing, Yuanzhi, Guang Yujin, Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Goutenggou, Baishao, Chuan Huanglian, Wei Tianma, Guangpi, and Qing Ejiao.
If water-fire stagnation and blood stasis occur, accompanied by epilepsy in women with dark purple menstrual blood, one may use Shengdi, Zidan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chao Shanzhi, Xi Poxie (Succini Granulum), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Hu Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma variant or related herb), and Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus).
If epilepsy arises from the development of Liver-Kidney Yang, accompanied by insomnia in winter due to Yang failing to store and descend, one may use Huyian Wan (Tiger-Hiding Pill, see previous text).
Chen Xiuyuan said: Epilepsy includes types of Wind-Heat and Fright-Evil, all caused by a combination of Deficiency and Phlegm. Pediatric formularies state that children have Five Epilepsies, with each Zang organ corresponding to an animal. The sound like a sheep indicates Heart Epilepsy; like a dog, Liver Epilepsy; like an ox, Spleen Epilepsy; like a chicken, Lung Epilepsy; like a pig, Kidney Epilepsy. These are all Wind diseases. The Nan Jing states that disease of the Du Meridian presents as stiffness of the spine and jue (cold extremities/syncope). Zhang Zhongjing stated: Spinal stiffness is the general name for "Jing" (Spasm) syndrome. Its symptoms include sudden lockjaw, opisthotonos (back arching), and convulsions.
