*Renzhai Zhizhi Fang* records: A farmer, after drinking heavily and eating his fill, worked outdoors under the stars for pleasure. After sleeping until dawn, he suffered from stabbing abdominal pain. Hundreds of medicines failed, and the condition lingered for years. Later, he met a master who taught him Chudao San. After several doses, he was instantly cured. This shows that wind and dew pathogens root in the Spleen and Stomach; Galangal Liangjiang and Acorus Shichangpu can disperse the evil qi, while Croton Babudou and Mylabris Banmao, borrowing their qi, can attack the root. Observing this case allows one to understand the whole from a part. However, once the pain ceases, should tonifying Spleen agents not continue for regulation? Treating illness is like washing clothes; one must remove the dirt before applying starch. "The physician acts with intention/mind," let us use this as a metaphor.
Hypochondriac pain has already been recorded in the chapter on various heart and abdominal symptoms. However, since this symptom is currently very common, it is supplemented below. Repetition is not tiresome.
The Liver penetrates the diaphragm and spreads along the hypochondria. Yin deficiency and blood dryness cause the Liver vessels to lose nourishment, resulting in pain. Symptoms include tension in the tendons under the hypochondrium, inability to take deep sighs, blurred vision, withered and bluish nails, worsening upon exertion, or onset upon hunger.
Shi Shi Bu Gan Fang (Master Shi’s Liver-Tonifying Formula):
Sour Date Seed Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) 4 qian; Prepared Rehmannia Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Atractylodes Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 3 qian); Angelica Radix Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Cornus Shanwuzi (Fructus Corni), Dioscorea Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Oppositae), Ligusticum Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Quisqualis Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis) (each 1.5 qian); Angelica Pubescens Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Schisandra Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) (each 0.3 qian).
Grind all into powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with water and take orally. "The Liver substance is Yin, its function is Yang." This formula uses sour flavors to tonify Liver substance and pungent flavors to tonify Liver function. Adding Angelica Pubescens Duhuo utilizes wind-dispelling herbs to expand its qi. Another version contains Ginseng Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Astragalus Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei), Ophiopogon Shihu (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis), Biota Seed Baiziren (Semen Biotae), Peach Kernel Taoren (Semen Persicae), without Shanyao, Duhuo, or Wuweizi. Another version uses Gelatin Ejiao made into pills the size of wutong seeds, taking 2 qian per dose with plain water on an empty stomach. Another version mixes one egg yolk Ji Zihuang (Ovi Albumen) and swallows it, twice daily.
