Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine, each 1 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, pitted, 3 pieces).
Decoct with 4 zhong of water to obtain 2.5 zhong, take warm.
If there is vexation in the chest without vomiting, this indicates accumulation of heat; remove Ban Xia and Ren Shen, add Gua Lou Shi (Trichosanthis Fructus) to drain heat. If there is thirst, this indicates deficiency of body fluids; remove Ban Xia, add Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), double the dose of Ren Shen to generate body fluids. If there is abdominal pain, this indicates stagnation of pathogenic factors; remove Huang Qin, add Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to unblock stagnation. If there is fullness and hardness under the ribs, remove Da Zao, add Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) to soften hardness. If there is palpitation below the heart and difficult urination, this indicates fluid retention; remove Huang Qin, add Fu Ling (Poria) to promote diuresis. If there is no thirst but slight exterior heat, this indicates that the exterior pathogen has not yet resolved; remove Ren Shen, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) to release the muscle layer. If there is cough, this indicates cold qi in the lungs with rebellious qi; remove Ren Shen, Da Zao, and Huang Qin, add Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) to disperse cold and direct qi downward.

Question: Why is deafness considered a Shaoyang syndrome? Answer: The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian connects to the ear. When pathogens are in the Shaoyang, deafness occurs. Another question: Why does Jueyin also cause deafness? Answer: The Liver and Gallbladder are interior-exteriorly related. Liver disease affects the Gallbladder, thus causing deafness as well. However, Shaoyang deafness is accompanied by alternating chills and fever; Jueyin deafness presents with curled tongue and retracted scrotum, which distinguishes them clearly.

Question: Why is chest fullness considered a half-exterior half-interior syndrome? Answer: The upper half of the chest belongs to the realm of clear yang, located precisely in the half-exterior half-interior region. Pathogens reaching here are about to enter the interior but have not deeply penetrated it. Therefore, chest fullness without abdominal fullness is due to pathogenic qi rather than tangible matter. If the abdomen is distended and full, it indicates tangible matter. Another question: Pi Qi (glomus) also causes fullness in the chest area; how to distinguish it? Answer: When pathogens enter the Three Yin meridians but have not yet condensed into excess, if a physician hastily uses purgatives, Pi Qi results. One must ask whether purgatives were previously used. If chest fullness appears after purgation, it is Pi Qi. If there is no history of purgation and there is fullness in the chest, it belongs to Shaoyang. Tao's treatment method for Shaoyang syndrome with chest fullness involves Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix). If ineffective, combining this formula with Xuan Xiong Tang (Small Phlegm-Heat Resolving Decoction) yields miraculous results. Thus, one can see that the use of herbs has its own interconnected principles.
