During pregnancy, the menstrual flow ceases. Turbid qi ascends and invades the clear pathways, leading to phlegm retention in the Zhongwan (middle epigastrium), resulting in dizziness, vomiting, and fullness/stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm. This condition is named Ezu (Morning Sickness/Pregnancy Vomiting). The treatment principle should be to regulate the Spleen and transform phlegm, raise the clear and descend the turbid, thereby stabilizing the Stomach Qi. The primary formula is Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) with added Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit). If there is Spleen deficiency, Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is used, with added Sugen (Perilla Stem), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome). Although Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) is a contraindicated herb during pregnancy, if phlegm-qi obstructs the Zhongwan, causing rebellion of Yin and Yang, this herb is necessary to eliminate the pathogen. By soaking it seven times in Ginger Juice (Jiangtang) and stir-frying it thoroughly before use, it causes no harm. Using it together with Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) is even more secure. Generally, to stabilize fetal Qi, stop vomiting, and resolve dizziness, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) must be used as the Sovereign herb, assisted by Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Sharen (Amomum Fruit), which often yields effective results. Pregnancy vomiting seems like a common ailment, but excessive vomiting may damage the fetal Qi; can physicians neglect proper care and regulation?
Erchen Tang and Liujunzi Tang (both see under Stroke category).
Fetal restlessness and insecurity during pregnancy are mostly caused by careless daily living, dietary taboos, Wind-Cold attacking the Chong and Ren meridians, falls or trauma, anger stirring Liver Fire, or Spleen Qi deficiency. One must investigate the specific cause and treat accordingly. The general principle is: if the fetus moves due to maternal illness, treat the mother's illness, and the fetus will naturally settle; if the maternal illness arises from fetal restlessness, stabilize the fetus, and the mother's illness will heal spontaneously. Furthermore, examine the complexion and tongue: if the face is red and the tongue is cyanotic, the fetus cannot be saved; if the face is cyanotic, the tongue is red, and there is foaming at the mouth, the mother also faces danger. Extreme caution is required during pregnancy.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, stir-fried with wine), Dushudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, nine-times processed), Fuling (Poria), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) (each 3 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
If caused by careless living, add Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), and Xuduan (Dipsacus Root); if caused by dietary taboos, add Renshen (Ginseng Root) and double the dosage of Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome); if caused by Wind-Cold conflict, dispel Wind-Cold according to meridian differentiation; if caused by falls or trauma, use Foshou San (Hand-Touching Powder) separately, adding Qingmuxiang (Tasmannia Stem) and Yimucao (Leonurus Herb); if caused by anger stirring Liver Fire, add Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) and Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit) to this formula; if caused by Spleen Qi deficiency, remove Dushudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) and add Renshen (Ginseng Root), Bidou (Lablab Bean), and Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). However, adjusting treatment according to the season and prescribing based on symptoms relies entirely on...
