The etiology of turbid discharge (Zhuo) involves two types: one stems from Kidney deficiency with the flow of degenerated essence; the other arises from Damp-Heat invading the Bladder. When Kidney Qi is deficient, tonifying the Kidney must be combined with promoting urination, because the Kidney meridian has two orifices: when the urinary orifice opens, the seminal orifice closes. For cases involving Damp-Heat, resolving Dampness must be accompanied by regulating the Spleen, because robust Earth can overcome Dampness, and when Earth is firm and consolidated, water naturally becomes clear. For Kidney deficiency, Tusizi Wan (Cuscuta Pill) is the primary formula; for Damp-Heat, Bixie Fenqing Yin (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Decoction for Clearing Turbidity) is the primary formula. One might ask: What is the reason for red turbid discharge? The answer is: This occurs when the turbid fluid flows excessively and does not have time to transform, or it may also result from excessive Heart Fire, presenting a red color. It is appropriate to add herbs such as Lotus Plumule (Lianzixin), Juncus Effusus (Dengxin), and Salvia Miltiorrhiza (Danshen).
Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) [4 liang], Poria [Fuling], Dioscorea Opposita [Shanyao], Astragalus Complanatus & Tribulus Terrestris [Shayuan Jili] (steamed), Plantago Seed [Cheqianzi], Polygala Tenuifolia [Yuanzhi Rou] (heart removed, soaked in Licorice decoction and stir-fried, each 2 liang), Oyster Shell [Muli] (crushed with vinegar, 1 liang). Use four liang of Dendrobium Officinale (Shihu), decoct into a paste, add refined honey according to quantity to form pills. Take 3–4 qian per dose, washed down with boiled water.
Sichuan Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome [Chuan Bixie] (2 qian), Phellodendron Bark [Huangbai] (stir-fried until brown), Acorus Tatarinowii [Shichangpu] (each 5 fen), Poria [Fuling], Atractylodes Macrocephala [Baizhu] (each 1 qian), Lotus Plumule [Lianzixin] (7 fen), Salvia Miltiorrhiza [Danshen], Plantago Seed [Cheqianzi] (each 1.5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Jaundice (Huangdan) is characterized by yellowing of the eyeballs, gradually spreading to the skin, all appearing yellow. This is caused by the obstruction and stagnation of Damp-Heat, similar to the fermentation of yeast; Dampness steams and Heat郁 (congeals), resulting in yellow color. However, Jaundice due to Damp-Heat appears bright like orange peel or Phellodendron bark, shining due to Fire energy; this is named Yang Jaundice. There is also Jaundice due to Cold-Damp, which appears dark yellow like smoked fabric, dull and not bright, possibly accompanied by cold extremities and a deep, fine pulse; this is named Yin Jaundice. For Yang Jaundice, Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction) is used; if constipation is present, Yinchen Dahuang Tang (Artemisia Capillaris and Rhubarb Decoction) is appropriate. For Yin Jaundice, Yinchen Wuling San (Artemisia Capillaris and Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) is used; if ineffective, Yinchen Jiangfu Tang (Artemisia Capillaris, Ginger, and Aconite Decoction) is applied. Among these, those caused by food stagnation are called Grain Jaundice (Gu Dan); those caused by alcohol injury are called Wine Jaundice (Jiu Dan); and sweating that stains clothes yellow is called Yellow Sweat (Huang Han), all belonging to the category of Yang Jaundice. Grain Jaundice presents with chest and diaphragm fullness, belching with a putrid odor, and acid regurgitation; it is treated with Jiawei Zhizhu Tang (Modified Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Decoction) plus Artemisia Capillaris, often yielding immediate results. For Wine Jaundice, add Pueraria Lobata (Gegen). For Yellow Sweat, use Zhizi Bopi Tang plus Atractylodes Macrocephala. Among these, there is also Female Labor Jaundice (Nulao Dan), which belongs to the category of Yin Jaundice, and should be treated with Jiangfu Tang plus Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala for tonification. Additionally, patients with chronic illnesses and the elderly may suffer from Spleen and Stomach damage, resulting in yellowed face and eyes with a dark, dull complexion; this indicates the leakage of true Qi from the Zang-Fu organs to the exterior and is generally difficult to treat. Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction) should be used as the primary formula. Zhizi Bopi Tang, Yinchen Dahuang Tang, Yinchen Wuling San, and Yinchen Jiangfu Tang (all see under "Yellowing due to Cold Damage").
