"Movement" refers to the stimulation of acupoints. By stimulating the acupoints of each meridian, one can ascertain the pathology. "Diseases generated by the meridian" refer to pathologies originating within the same meridian itself. "Various diseases" refer to combined pathologies involving other meridians; this includes conditions where the primary meridian affects others, or where other meridians invade the primary meridian. "Excess of Qi" refers to the excess of pathogenic factors. "Deficiency of Qi" refers to the deficiency of healthy Qi. Synthesizing these four categories—self-originated disease, combined disease, Qi excess, and Qi deficiency—the general scope of pathological conditions is comprehensively covered. Each category presents several specific manifestations to illustrate its meaning. For other meridians, only self-originated and combined diseases are mentioned, without detailed discussion on excess or deficiency patterns; this implies that such patterns can be inferred by analogy. For instance, lung distension causing chest fullness, palpitation, rapid breathing, and coughing constitutes a Zang-organ pathology. Pain in the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen), severe cases of which involve crossing both hands over the chest leading to dizziness or confusion, constitutes a meridian pathology. Although the supraclavicular fossa is traversed by the Large Intestine meridian, its collaterals connect with the Large Intestine yet remain part of the Lung's meridian system; thus, these are all diseases generated by the Lung. Cough and wheezing appearing below share similarities with the above, but when presented alongside symptoms like rebellious Qi, thirst, and vexation, they indicate involvement from other meridians. Chest fullness is similar to distension; while distension specifically pertains to the Lung, chest fullness here involves the stagnation of various types of Qi. Pain in the medial aspect of the arm is also a pathology of the primary meridian,无异 to the pulling pain in both hands mentioned earlier; however, when accompanied by cold limbs and heat in the palms, it indicates involvement from the Heart and Pericardium. Shoulder and back pain present similarly regardless of whether due to Qi excess or deficiency, though the etiology differs. Sweating followed by wind-strike occurs because the Lung governs the skin and hair. Frequent urination with incomplete emptying and changes in urine color are pathologies of the Kidney and Bladder, representing a mother-organ pathology affecting the child organ. Shortness of breath and inability to take deep breaths constitute a pathology of the primary Zang organ. The aforementioned descriptions of various syndromes are quite detailed; for any omissions, one should consult the materia medica regarding the root and branch diseases.
The Lung stores the Po (Corporeal Soul), belongs to Metal, governs the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) of the entire body, controls the sense of smell, governs crying, and governs the skin and hair.
Root Diseases (Zang-Organ Pathologies)
Various Qi stagnations, (as the Lung governs Qi.) Various Wei syndromes (Flaccidity syndromes), (as the Lung is the canopy of the five Zang organs, all Wei syndromes of the five Zang organs belong to the Lung.) Shortness of breath, cough, rebellious Qi, (belonging to the same meridian.) Coughing up pus and blood, (i.e., Lung Abscess.) Inability to lie flat, (as the Lung stores the Po.) Frequent urination with incomplete emptying, incontinence of urine and feces. (Belonging to the same meridian.)
Branch Diseases (Meridian Pathologies)
Chills and fever alternating, (as the Lung governs the skin and hair.) Wind-strike with spontaneous sweating, shoulder and back pain with cold sensation, pain along the anterior margin of the arm. (Belonging to the same meridian.)
