The Middle Jiao refers to the Zhongwan (CV12) acupoint. The gastric opening refers to the upper part of the stomach, specifically the Shangwan area. "Luo" (collaterals) is likened to a兜 (兜 means to encircle or hold up). "Xun" means to patrol or follow along. The diaphragm refers to the membrane below the heart. The lung system refers to the trachea and larynx (throat). The area below the shoulder and above the hypochondrium is called the axilla. The area below the arm directly opposite the axilla is [text missing in original, contextually referring to the lateral chest/axillary region]. The end of the elbow is the elbow joint. The part from the elbow down to the wrist is called the forearm. "Lian" means edge or corner. The arterial pulse anterior to the guan position is called the Cun Kou (radial pulse at the wrist). The raised muscular area posterior to the first metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb is collectively called the Yu (fish), and the acupoint within this area is named Yuji (LU10). "Duan" means the tip or extremity. "Zhi" (branch) is like branches on a tree; it refers to the collateral vessels that branch off from the main meridian which runs straight. The straight-running vessels are called Jing (main meridians), while the branching ones are called Luo (collaterals). The end of the arm bones is the wrist.
The meridian of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel originates in the Middle Jiao. This is because after food and drink enter the stomach, their refined essence ascends to be injected into the lung meridian. It descends to connect with the Large Intestine, as the Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interiorly related. It turns and patrols the upper opening of the stomach, belongs to the Lung, and then exits horizontally from the lung system into the axilla. Specifically, it emerges from the Zhongfu (LU1) and Yunmen (LU2) acupoints in the chest into the axilla, descends along the medial aspect of the upper arm, passes through Tianfu (LU3) and Xiabai (LU4), runs anterior to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel and the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Channel, descends into the elbow, and reaches the Chize (LU5) acupoint. Having descended into the elbow, it follows the lower edge of the medial bone of the forearm, passes through Kongzui (LU6) and Lieque (LU7), enters the Jingqu (LU8) and Taiyuan (LU9) acupoints at the Cun Kou, and ascends to the Yuji (LU10). It then proceeds from Yuji to the tip of the thumb, ending at the Shaoshang (LU11) acupoint. Its branch diverges from the Lieque (LU7) acupoint behind the wrist, connects with the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel, reaches the Shangyang (LI1) acupoint, and ascends following Shangyang.
The Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel has eleven acupoints: Zhongfu, Yunmen, Tianfu, Lieque, Xiabai, Chize, Kongzui, Lieque (repeated in song for rhythm/emphasis), Jingqu, Taiyuan, Yuji, and Shaoshang at the finger tip, resembling the width of a leek leaf.
The Taiyin Lung channel begins at Zhongfu. Yunmen is approximately one cun below Zhongfu. Yunmen is six cun lateral to Xuanji (CV15), and two cun below Jugu (SI1). Tianfu is sought three cun below the axilla. Xiabai is governed at five cun above the elbow. Chize is located in the center of the cubital crease. Kongzui is taken seven cun above the wrist. Lieque is located one and a half cun on the radial side of the wrist. Jingqu is governed in the depression at the Cun Kou. Taiyuan is at the head of the transverse crease of the palm. Yuji is palpated where the scattered pulses emerge after the joint. Shaoshang is on the medial side of the tip of the thumb, approximately the width of a leek leaf away from the nail bed.
