(The channel originates at Tongziliao (GB15) and terminates at Zuqiaoyin (GB44).)
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel begins at the outer canthus of the eye, ascends to the vertex/corner of the head, descends behind the ear, follows the neck, runs anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, reaches the shoulder, then turns back to emerge posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, and enters the supraclavicular fossa. A branch enters the ear from behind it, emerges anterior to the ear, and reaches the area posterior to the outer canthus. Another branch diverges from the outer canthus, descends to Daying (LI17), merges with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, reaches below the orbit, descends past Jiache (ST6), goes down the neck, and joins the supraclavicular group; it then descends into the chest, pierces the diaphragm, connects with the Liver, and belongs to the Gallbladder. It follows the interior of the hypochondrium, emerges at Qichong (ST30), surrounds the pubic region, and transversely enters the hip joint (Biyan). The main trunk descends from the supraclavicular fossa under the axilla, follows the chest passing through the costal margin, descends to merge with the branch in the hip joint, then continues down the lateral aspect of the thigh, emerges at the lateral side of the knee, descends anterior to the fibula, reaches the end of the Jiegu (lower fibula), emerges anterior to the lateral malleolus, follows the dorsum of the foot, and enters between the fourth and fifth toes. A branch diverges from the dorsum of the foot, enters the space between the great toe and second toe, follows the medial aspect of the dorsal bone of the great toe, emerges at its tip, returns to penetrate the nail bed, and emerges at the trichiasis (hair tuft).
When pathological changes occur in this channel, symptoms include bitter taste in the mouth, frequent sighing, pain in the heart and hypochondrium preventing turning of the body, and in severe cases, a dusty complexion, lack of luster in the body, and heat on the lateral aspect of the foot, known as Yang-Jue (Yang Reversal). This channel governs diseases arising from the bones, including headache, mandibular pain, pain at the outer canthus, swelling and pain in the supraclavicular fossa, axillary swelling, scrofula (Madao and Xiaying), sweating with chills, malaria, and pain throughout the chest, hypochondrium, ribs, thigh, lateral knee, tibia, Jiegu, lateral malleolus, and all joints, along with dysfunction of the fourth and fifth toes. For these conditions, excess is treated by draining, deficiency by tonifying, heat by rapid needling, cold by retaining the needle, sinking pulse by moxibustion, and neither excess nor deficiency by selecting points from the channel itself. Excess is indicated when the Renying pulse is one times larger than the Cunkou pulse; deficiency is indicated when the Renying pulse is smaller than the Cunkou pulse.
The hypochondrium is also called Ji Xie. The area outside the pubic symphysis is the pubic region. The pulsating artery on both sides of the pubic region is Qichong. Biyan refers to the hip pivot (hip joint). The lower part of the rib cage is the costal margin. The fibula is the Fu Gu. The area above the lateral malleolus is Jiegu. The dorsum of the foot is Fu. The bone behind the metatarsophalangeal joint of the great toe is Qi Gu. The area behind the nail of the great toe is San Mao.
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel receives intersection with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel. It originates at Tongziliao (GB15) in the outer canthus, ascends via Tinghui (GB2) and Kerenren (Shangguan GB12) to the corner of the head, follows Hanyan (GB18), descends to Xuanlu (GB19) and Xuanli (GB20), follows the hairline above the ear to Qubin (GB7) and Lvgu (GB8), turns outward from Lvgu, descends behind the ear following Tianchong (GB9), Fubai (GB10), Zuqiaoyin (GB44), and Wanggu (GB12), then turns outward from Wanggu, follows Benshen (GB13) down to Yangbai (GB14), meets Jingming (BL1), ascends again from Jingming, follows Linqi (GB15), Mucuang (GB16), Zhengying (GB17), Chengling (GB19), Naokong (GB11), Fengchi (GB20) to the neck, runs anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, descends to the shoulder, follows Jianjing (GB21), crosses left and right to emerge posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, and enters the supraclavicular fossa externally. A branch enters the ear from behind, passes through Tinggong (SI19) to reach the territory of Tongziliao (GB15) at the outer canthus. Another branch diverges from Tongziliao (GB15), descends to Daying (LI17), merges with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel near Sizhukong (TE23), descends near Jiache (ST6), goes down the neck, follows the anterior aspect of this channel, and merges with the branch that previously entered the supraclavicular fossa. It descends laterally to Tianchi (PC1), pierces the diaphragm at the location of Qimen (LR14), connects with the Liver, descends to belong to the Gallbladder, follows the interior of the hypochondrium from the Gallbladder connection to Qichong (ST30), surrounds the pubic region, and transversely enters the Huantiao (GB30) point in the hip joint. The main trunk descends from the supraclavicular fossa under the axilla, follows the chest, passes through Yuanye (GB24), Zhejin (GB25), Riyue (GB24), crosses the costal margin, follows Jingmen (GB25), Daimai (GB26), Wushu (GB27), Weidao (GB28), Juliao (GB29), merges with the branch entering the hip joint, then descends along the lateral thigh between the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel and Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel, passes through Zhongdu (GB33) and Yangguan (GB34), emerges at the lateral side of the knee, reaches Yanglingquan (GB34), descends anterior to the fibula, passes through Yangjiao (GB35), Waixiu (GB36), Guangming (GB37), reaches the end of Jiegu, follows Yangfu (GB38), Xuanzhong (GB39), and emerges anterior to the lateral malleolus, reaches Qiuxu (GB40), follows Linqi (GB15), Wuhui (GB43), Xiaxi (GB43) on the dorsum of the foot, ascends into the space between the fourth and fifth toes, and terminates at Zuqiaoyin (GB44). A divergent branch separates from Linqi (GB15) on the dorsum of the foot, enters the great toe, follows the Qi Gu internally, emerges at the tip of the great toe, returns to penetrate the nail bed, emerges at San Mao, and intersects with the Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel.
