(When the exterior syndrome is unresolved and there is interior cold, see Guizhi Tang above.) Body pain accompanied by diarrhea indicates impending Yang collapse; for emergency rescue, decoct Sini Tang first. If stool and urine are normal with no interior signs, using Guizhi Tang to resolve the exterior is an excellent prescription.
Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction)
Urgent rescue of the interior requires dispelling cold; warming the middle with medicine is not difficult. Aconite (Fuzi), dried ginger (Ganjiang), and licorice (Gancao) are used; this divine pill restores Yang Qi.
Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Shengjiang Renshen Xinjia Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction Plus Paeonia, Fresh Ginger, and Ginseng, Newly Modified)
(Syndrome annotation: Exterior unresolved with interior deficiency.) Body pain, pulse deep and slow after sweating; jujube (Dazao) and licorice harmonize the middle, cinnamon twig resolves the muscle layer. Doubling fresh ginger and paeonia, combined with ginseng, applies both tonifying deficiency and dispersing depression methods.
(Exterior and interior both heat) The syndrome belongs to a misapplied purgative method on a Guizhi Tang pattern; continuous diarrhea makes the condition critical. The pulse presents as rapid (Cu) with the exterior still present, accompanied by sweating, wheezing, and internal heat.
Ge Gen Huang Qin Huang Lian Tang (Kudzu Root, Scutellaria, and Coptis Decoction)
The treatment method clears both exterior and interior comprehensively; kudzu root (Genkei) and licorice combine with scutellaria (Ogon) and coptis (Oren). As heat pathogens recede, miraculous efficacy is achieved; wheezing, sweating, and diarrhea can all be cured.
Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction Without Paeonia)
Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction Without Paeonia plus Aconite)
(Syndrome annotation: Exterior and interior both cold.) Pulse rapid with occasional palpitations and abdominal fullness; ginger, licorice, cinnamon twig, and jujube form a wondrous prescription. Adding aconite is especially effective for aversion to cold; total Yang deficiency of exterior and interior can generally be treated.
Guizhi Jia Houpo Xingren Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Magnolia Bark and Apricot Kernel)
(Syndrome annotation: Exterior and interior both excess.) After misapplication of purgatives, palpitations and slight wheezing arise; exterior cold remains unresolved, so the condition is not mild. Cinnamon twig, fresh ginger, jujube, and paeonia combined with licorice show therapeutic effects when magnolia bark (Houpo) and apricot kernel (Kyojin) are added.
(Exterior resolved but water retention in interior) After taking Guizhi Tang or being subjected to purgation, headache and neck stiffness persist. With abundant heat, absence of sweating, and epigastric fullness, urinary obstruction requires prompt medical attention.
Guizhi Qu Gui Jia Fuling Baizhu Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction Without Cinnamon Twig plus Poria and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction)
Fresh ginger, licorice, jujube, and paeonia remain unchanged; poria (Furyo) and atractylodes macrocephala (Byakujutsu) are newly added while cinnamon twig is removed. Since the exterior disease is eliminated, only diuresis is needed; this modified prescription is entirely appropriate.
Houpo Shengjiang Gancao Banxia Renshen Tang (Magnolia Bark, Fresh Ginger, Licorice, Pinellia, and Ginseng Decoction)
(Syndrome annotation: Exterior deficiency with interior excess.) Abdominal distension occurs after sweating; fresh ginger, licorice, magnolia bark, and pinellia are suitably indicated. For exterior deficiency, the use of ginsRen is ingenious; combining attack and tonification yields a more wondrous method.
Zhizi Houpo Tang (Gardenia and Magnolia Bark Decoction)
(Syndrome annotation: Interior excess suitable for emesis, same as Wuzhizi Tang.) After purgation, middle Qi deficiency causes restlessness in lying down; irritability and abdominal fullness belong to cold damage. Attack should use zhiishi and houpo decocted together; emesis using gardenia (Shishi) shows considerable effect.
Zhizi Ganjiang Tang (Gardenia and Dried Ginger Decoction)
(Syndrome annotation) Cold damage mismanaged with pill-based purgatives results in body heat, slight irritability, and stasis in the middle. Gardenia eliminates pathogens and induces vomiting of turbidity; dried ginger lowers rebellious Qi with miraculous merit.
Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction)
(Syndrome annotation) After sweating followed by improper purgation, palpitations, irritability, and heat arise suddenly. Stomach Yin rebels upward, filling the chest and causing stifling; fermented soybean (Chiko) and gardenia are used to induce vomiting of turbidity and regulate the middle.
