The production of voice is governed by the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian (Shǒu Tàiyīn Fèi Jīng). The Lungs store Qi, and the agitation and fluctuation of Qi generate sound. Therefore, when the Lungs are diseased, the voice becomes discordant; when Qi is diseased, the voice becomes obstructed.
The reason for Qi pathology lies in the dampness of the Earth element (Jǐ Tǔ, referring to Spleen/Stomach). When Earth is damp, the voice becomes hoarse or lost. As for unclear speech due to missing lips or fallen teeth, this is a manifestation of Qi leakage. For dripping nasal mucus, Nasal Sinusitis (Bí Yuān), and dull voice, this is a manifestation of Qi cold. However, although sound originates from Qi, Qi is directed by Shen (Spirit/Mind). Just as the opening and closing of doors or the activation of mechanisms, it is Qi that drives them. Yet, what governs these openings and closings, ensuring appropriate speed and pitch, is the direction of Shen. Thus, hoarseness due to chronic cough indicates pathology in Sheng-Qi (Voice-Qi); aphasia due to Stroke (Zhòng Fēng) indicates pathology in Shen-Ming (Spirit-Consciousness). When Sheng-Qi is diseased, one can speak but not loudly; when Shen-Ming is diseased, one can produce loud sounds but cannot articulate speech. Sheng-Qi originates from the Lungs, while Shen-Ming resides in the Heart. Sound is activated by Qi, and speech is initiated by Shen. Therefore, the method to regulate voice is to tonify Clear Yang and expel Turbid Yin, which is a fixed principle. If dampness is abundant and Qi is stagnant causing dull voice, Fu Ling Ju Pi Xing Ren Tang (Poria, Tangerine Peel, and Apricot Seed Decoction) is the primary treatment. If there is loss of voice or aphonia, Bai He Jie Geng Ji Zi Tang (Lily Bulb, Platycodon, and Egg White Decoction) is the primary treatment.

Beard and hair are nourished and flourished by the Qi and Blood of the six Yang meridians of the hands and feet. When the Qi and Blood of the six meridians are abundant, beard and hair are beautiful and long. When Qi and Blood decline, beard and hair become coarse and short. Beard and hair are generated by Ying-Blood (Nutritive Blood) and developed by Wei-Qi (Defensive Qi). Blood roots in the upper part but thrives in the lower part; Qi roots in the lower part but thrives in the upper part. The reason why beard and hair thrive in the upper part but decline in the lower part is that the meridian Qi of the six Yang meridians of the hands and feet is abundant in the upper part. Generally, the growth of beard and hair relies on Blood to moisten them, thereby nourishing their roots; and on Qi to warm them, thereby flourishing their branches and leaves. When beard falls out and hair becomes scorched, it indicates Blood deficiency and Qi failure. One should simultaneously tonify both the root (Ying) and the branch (Wei) to achieve recovery. If beard falls out, hair becomes scorched, dry, and lacks luster, Gui Zhi Bo Ye Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Biota Leaf Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Gui Zhi Bo Ye Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Biota Leaf Decoction)
Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata, 3 qian) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 qian) Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 3 qian) Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian) Bo Ye (Biotae Cacumen, 3 qian) Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian) E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 qian)
Decoct in water until more than half a cup remains, take warm. If hair turns yellow, dry, and grays prematurely, add Sang Shen (Mori Fructus) and Hei Dou (Sojae Glycines Semen Nigrum). If Yang is deficient and Earth is damp, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu Ling (Poria). If Lung Qi is insufficient, heavily use Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), because the Lungs govern the skin and hair.
