Toothache is a disease of the Foot-Yangming (Stomach) channel. The Yangming channel governs descending; when descending functions normally, turbid qi does not obstruct upward, thus there is no pain. If stomach qi rebels and fails to descend, turbid qi becomes stagnant and oppressive, causing Jia Wood (Gallbladder Qi) to rebel and rush upward, attacking the dental alveolus, resulting in swelling and pain. Ministerial Fire flares upward, generating heat. When Jia Wood is depressed within damp Earth, it rots and decays, leading to the generation of "worms" (caries) and tooth destruction. For toothache accompanied by gingival swelling, Huangqin Shigao Tang (Scutellaria and Gypsum Decoction) is prescribed. For dental caries ("worm teeth"), Chaihu Taoren Tang (Bupleurum and Peach Kernel Decoction) is prescribed.

Decoct with water to obtain slightly more than half a cup, take hot, and swallow slowly.
Chaihu Taoren Tang (Bupleurum and Peach Kernel Decoction)

The throat and pharynx are the pathways for the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. The pharynx (Yan) is the thoroughfare of the Six Fu Organs, while the larynx/pharynx proper (Hou) is the main gate of the Five Zang Organs. The Six Fu Organs belong to Yang, containing Yin within Yang. Turbid Yin descends through the pharynx, representing the descent of Heaven Qi. The Five Zang Organs belong to Yin, containing Yang within Yin. Clear Yang ascends from the Hou, representing the ascent of Earth Qi. If Earth Qi fails to ascend, Hou diseases occur, characterized by Qi obstruction but food passage remaining open. If Heaven Qi fails to descend, Yan diseases occur, characterized by Qi passage remaining open but food obstruction. If food obstruction precedes Qi blockage, it indicates intact Zang organs but injured Fu organs. If Qi blockage precedes food obstruction, it indicates intact Fu organs but injured Zang organs. In summary, the Yan connects to the Six Fu Organs, with the Stomach as its master; the Hou connects to the Five Zang Organs, with the Lung as its patriarch. If Yang Qi declines and Spleen Earth is damp, causing Lung and Stomach Qi to fail to descend, turbid Qi becomes stagnant and congested, forming Bi obstruction diseases. If Ministerial Fire rises and inflames, swelling and pain diseases arise. For sore throat and pharyngitis with swelling, redness, and ulceration, Gancao Jiegeng Yegan Tang (Licorice, Platycodon, and Belamcanda Decoction) is prescribed. For Hou ulcers where pus has formed, Beimu Shengma Biejia Tang (Fritillaria, Cimicifuga, and Turtle Shell Decoction) is prescribed.
