(Exterior syndrome resolved, interior excess is mild) Sweating with tidal fever and unsmooth bowel movement. Since the exterior pathogenic factor has been resolved, the interior can be attacked; however, only by mildly harmonizing the stomach qi does one follow the proper method. One must guard against errors when using purgative methods.
Xiao Cheng Qi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction)
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) decocted together exert a unique and powerful force in moving qi and relieving distension. Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) sweeps away filth with miraculous efficacy. When there is abdominal irritability and fullness, the stomach qi should be harmonized; for interior excess, this formula is first appropriate to attack.
(Exterior syndrome resolved, interior excess is severe) Tidal fever without aversion to cold, delirious speech and muttering alone causing restlessness, periumbilical pain especially accompanied by irritability. When feces are hard like pellets, defecation is difficult.
(The Three Urgent Purging Syndromes) Abdominal fullness and pain require rapid purging; fever with profuse sweating requires urgent purging. If the eyes cannot focus clearly (vision is blurred), and feces are hard with internal dryness, treatment must not be delayed.
Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction)
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) sweeping away filth is truly miraculous; Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) jointly attack as auxiliary support. Adding Mang Xiao (Mirabilite) breaks down hardness, ensuring no dry feces remain in the abdomen.
Mi Jian Dao Fang (Honey Suppository Formula) and Zhu Dan Zhi Fang (Pig Bile Formula)
(Syndrome Note) Although the stool is hard, it cannot be treated with harsh purgatives. Honey can be shaped into a suppository and inserted into the anus. Vinegar-mixed pig bile can also guide evacuation; external methods are equally miraculous and effective.
(Interior excess with Spleen Constraint) The pulse is floating and additionally choppy, which is the true pulse form. When stomach qi is strong, urination is frequent. Difficulty in passing stool is due to the Spleen's constraint; the method should utilize pills containing Ma Ren (Cannabis Seed).
Ma Ren Wan (Cannabis Seed Pill)
Using Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) for purging works with miraculous subtlety; Run Chang (moistening the intestines) combines Shao Yao (Peony Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), and Ma Ren (Cannabis Seed). Furthermore, Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) specialize in moving qi; refined honey is used to make pills to accord with the etiology.
(Interior excess with Blood Stasis - Formula seen in Taiyang Primary Disease chapter) The disease enters Yangming yet presents with forgetfulness; blood stasis has accumulated in the abdomen for a long time. Although the stool is black and hard, it passes relatively easily. The symptom of excessive hunger after eating is detailed in the treatment methods.
(Interior cold with abundant water-dampness - Formula seen in Taiyang Damaged Disease chapter) Exterior heat with interior cold, where yin excess overcomes yang. The pulse is floating and slow; differentiation must be careful and detailed. Frequent diarrhea with undigested food indicates pathology in the abdominal meridians; the treatment method particularly favors Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction).
(Interior cold with Spleen-Stomach deficiency) Vomiting occurs after eating grain; thus, rebellious stomach qi belongs to the Yangming category. Middle jiao deficiency always requires warming and tonification; the decoction uses Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), demonstrating precise treatment methods.
Wu Zhu Yu Tang (Evodia Decoction)
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) is a wonderful product for warming the middle; adding Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) further assists yang. Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) nourish the Liver and supplement qi; harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach makes this an excellent prescription.
