Hong Kong foot disease (Jiaoqi) arises from the feet contacting the ground and being invaded by cold, summer-heat, wind, and dampness pathogens. It initially starts in the feet, gradually ascending to the lower abdomen, and in severe cases, attacks the heart and chest. If not treated promptly, it can be fatal. However, this condition is categorized into dry and wet types. In wet Hong Kong foot, both feet are swollen, or sores form with oozing fluid; Ji Ming San (Cockcrow Decoction) is the primary formula. In dry Hong Kong foot, the calves are not swollen but may present with numbness, stiffness, spasms, or flaccidity; this is due to blood deficiency combined with dampness, treated primarily with Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) modified. For Jiaoqi pain causing inability to flex or extend the joints, Wu Tou Tang (Aconite Decoction) is used. If there is wheezing and shortness of breath, along with insensibility in the lower abdomen, suggesting impending cardiac attack which may be incurable, Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) is indicated. For Hong Kong foot attacking the heart, Fan Shi Tang (Alum Decoction) is used for foot soaking.
