(When the Taiyang syndrome has not yet resolved and there is excess in the exterior, see the section on Taiyang primary disease.) Ten days into the illness, the Taiyang pathogen remains; although the course has been long, the pulse still floats. Since the exterior pathogen has not been expelled, it is still appropriate to use a method to release the exterior; using Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) yields effective results.
(When Shaoyang symptoms are present accompanied by interior deficiency.) The pulse presents as choppy at the Yang position and string-taut at the Yin position; abdominal cramping pain indicates a serious condition. Jianzhong Tang (Middle-Jian Decoction) should be used; this medicine is exquisite for syndromes belonging to Spleen deficiency.
Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Middle-Jian Decoction)
For nourishing Yin, Baishao (White Peony Root) is most suitable; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) can support Yang and assist Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig); Gancao (Licorice Root) and Dazao (Jujube) enter to harmonize the Stomach and strengthen the Spleen; Yitang (Maltose) is used to nourish essence and relieve urgency.
Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction)
(Case note: Diarrhea resulting from concurrent Taiyin and Shaoyang diseases)
Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria Decoction plus Pinellia and Fresh Ginger)
(Case note: Diarrhea accompanied by vomiting) When two Yang meridians are concurrently affected, diarrhea arises rapidly; Shaoyao (Peony Root) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) clear ministerial fire heat; Cao (Licorice) and Zao (Jujube) tonify the Spleen, making the formula excellent; adding Jiang (Ginger) and Xia (Pinellia) can calm vomiting.
(When the exterior is unresolved but the interior is full/excess.) If exterior cold is not resolved, the condition ultimately becomes critical; sweating may alarm one to the presence of interior heat. With persistent vomiting and diarrhea and epigastric fullness/stuffiness, both dispersing (exterior) and purging (interior) methods must be applied simultaneously.
Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction)
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) reaches the exterior; Shaoyao (Peony Root) clears wind-heat; Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) attack the interior; Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) drives out phlegm; Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) removes heat; combined with Jiang (Ginger) and Zao (Jujube), it effectively harmonizes the middle.
(When the exterior has resolved but interior heat prevails, see the section on Taiyang damaged disease.) After the Taiyang disease has passed its typical duration, the patient feels a warm discomfort in the heart region with an urge to vomit; abdominal fullness, loose stools, and increased chest pain occur. One must first ascertain if emetic or purgative therapies were previously administered.
(Heat entering the Blood Chamber in women, see above.) During Wind-stroke with fever and aversion to cold, if menstruation happens to begin, the pulse becomes slow. As the Blood Chamber opens briefly, pathogens enter; delirium and visual hallucinations appear, which should not cause panic or doubt.
[The Pathway Entering Yangming]
(Interior deficiency with palpitations and vexation, see Shaoyang primary disease section.) In Cold Damage progressing to the second or third day, palpitations in the heart region persist without resolving. For syndromes of deficiency-vexation, what medicine treats it? The method suits using Jianzhong Tang for regulation.
(Interior deficiency with palpitations and trembling.) A knotted or intermittent pulse characterizes Cold Damage; palpitations and fright prevent peace. Since the Middle Qi is already deficient, tonification is indicated; decocting Zhigancao Tang (Honey-fried Licorice Decoction) is not difficult.
Zhigancao Tang (Honey-fried Licorice Decoction)
A decoction of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), and Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), combined with Huren (Hemp Seed), Dazao (Jujube), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). It tonifies both Yin and Yang to calm palpitations; its legislation is unbiased and makes it an excellent remedy for disease.
