[Tian] Hongyu San (Red Jade Powder): Treats pediatric otitis media with suppuration (nong er).
Calcined Alum (Ku Bai Fan), Dried Carmine (Gan Yan Zhi), Musk (She Xiang) (each 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients uniformly. First, clean the ear canal using a cotton-wrapped stick, then apply the powder.
[Tang] Longhuang San (Dragon Yellow Powder): Treats pediatric otorrhea with effusion (ting er), where fluid discharge is unceasing.
Calcined Alum (Ku Bai Fan), Powdered Dragon Bone (Long Gu Mo), Calcined Minium (Huang Dan, stir-fried) (each 0.5 liang), Musk (She Xiang) (1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. First, use a cotton swab to absorb all pus and fluid. Take an amount of powder equivalent to "one zi half" (approx. 1.5 grams), divide it into two portions, and insufflate into the ear. Apply twice daily.
[Danxi] For ting er (otorrhea with effusion): Apply Sulfur powder (Liu Huang Mo) externally once every night; this is excellent.
[Secret Essentials] Insufflate ash powder from Qu (snail/shell) into the ear for immediate effect. If there are sores, apply externally. (Sun Simiao's formula is the same.)
Yawning with a red face indicates Wind-Heat (Feng Re); a blue-green face indicates Convulsive Disorder due to Fright (Jing Feng); a sallow yellow face indicates Spleen Deficiency with Fright (Pi Xu Jing); excessive sleepiness indicates Internal Heat (Nei Re); hot breath indicates Wind Injury (Shang Feng).
[Li Dongyuan] Buyang Tang (Tonify Yang Decoction): In early winter, a two-year-old child presented with a severe Cold syndrome. There were blue veins at Mingtang (the area between the eyebrows), blackish-blue discoloration on the forehead, elevated blue collaterals behind the head, cyanotic lips, white and slippery coating on the tongue, stridor in the throat with wheezing, slightly greenish stool, cold ear tips, dry eyes with frequent tearing, excessive eye discharge, chest discomfort, frequent fright during sleep without convulsions, indicating a Cold pattern.
Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu) (3 qian), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Sheng Ma) (2 qian), Ephedra Stem (Ma Huang) (3 qian), Evodia Fruit (Wu Zhu Yu) (0.5 fen), Earthworm (Di Long) (5 qian), Scorpion Tail (Xie Shao) (small amount), Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di) (0.5 fen), Angelica Sinensis Root (Gui Shen) (3 qian), Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) (1 qian), Astragalus Root (Huang Qi) (0.2 fen), Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bo) (1 qian), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi) (0.1 fen), Kudzu Root (Ge Gen), Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao) (each 1 qian).
Process into coarse powder. Prepare as one dose, decoct with one cup of water according to standard methods. Administer warm after milk or food intake. The child gradually began to prefer sleeping, spirit recovered, qi became harmonious and smooth, and appetite increased.
[Qian Yi] When Blood and Qi are deficient and weak, and invaded by Cold, the lips become cyanotic.
[Tang] Food stagnation presenting with alternating chills and fever like malaria, thirst, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and a desire to lie prone. This condition requires first purging the stagnation. Use only Pingwei San (Pingwei Powder), followed by regular administration of Jinshi Wan (Appetite-Stimulating Pill).
(Pingwei San formula is found in the Adult Diarrhea section; Jinshi Wan formula is found in the Pi Accumulation section.)
[Qian Yi] Cao Yide's three-year-old son had a sallow yellow complexion, intermittent chills and fever, anorexia but incessant drinking of water and milk. Other physicians diagnosed it as tidal fever and used Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) without success. Subsequently, they administered Zhike Gange San (Thirst-Relieving Kudzu Powder), which caused vomiting. Qian Yi said: "One should use Baibing Zi (White Cake Pill) to purge the accumulation, then tonify the Spleen, and finally use Xiaoji Wan (Accumulation-Dissolving Pill) to grind away the stagnation. This is the correct resolution." The child indeed recovered. Why? Not eating but only drinking indicates that food is hidden within the Spleen and cannot be digested, leading to chills and fever. Vomiting after taking thirst-relieving medicine occurs because the medicine clashes with the Spleen. Therefore, purging leads to recovery.
[Zhang Congzheng] The eight-year-old son of Patrol Officer Gao suffered from a heat disease. Physicians all attributed it to Cold injury and treated it with warming herbs. The child desired ice water, but was denied, causing internal fluids to dry up, worsening irritability, constipation and urinary retention, dry mouth and nose, alternating chills and fever, intermittent cough, and absence of sweat over the whole body. They intended to apply moxibustion. Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng's pseudonym) encountered them and rebuked the mother: "Covering with heavy quilts, sleeping on a heated kang, and burning red charcoal stoves—the child already cannot bear the heat; how can moxibustion be applied?" The mother apologized for her ignorance. Dai Ren ordered the administration of Renshen Chai Hu Yinzi (Ginseng and Bupleurum Drink). After several doses, foul-smelling, rotting fish-intestine-like material was excreted. Thirsty for water, he was allowed to drink whatever he wished, including ice-cold water, consuming several cups continuously. He subsequently defecated thirty to forty times, and the high fever subsided. Tongge Wan (Pharynx-Unblocking Pill) and Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) were given again, resulting in more than ten additional bowel movements, after which the child fully recovered. In total, there were over fifty bowel movements, and approximately one hu (a unit of volume) of ice water was consumed. How disastrous would moxibustion have been?
