[Ling Shu] The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi mechanism causes people to be prone to forgetfulness? Qibo replied: When the qi in the upper part is insufficient and the qi in the lower part is excessive, the intestines and stomach are full while the heart qi is deficient. Due to this deficiency, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi remain stagnant in the lower part, and over time fail to ascend to the upper part when they should, thus leading to forgetfulness. (From "Da Huo Lun")
[Qian Jin] Kongzi Dasheng Zhenzhong Fang (Great Sage Pillow-Middle Decoction of Confucius)
Guizhi (Tortoise Plastron, specifically from naturally deceased tortoises) Longgu (Dragon Bone) Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma)
The above four herbs are ground into fine powder in equal proportions. Take one fangcun bi (a traditional measuring spoon) with wine, three times a day. Regular use enhances mental clarity. (Yan Yi states that Guizhi, due to its spiritual resonance with phenomena, is very effective for tonifying the heart.)

According to Yunqi (Five Movements and Six Qi) theory, amnesia belongs to Heart Fire deficiency. The classics state: When Fire movement is insufficient, it is called Fu Ming (Hidden Brightness). In the Ji (Pattern) of Fu Ming, the disease manifests as dizziness or sorrowful forgetfulness. It also states: When Taiyang governs the year, cold qi descends, and Heart qi follows upward, leading to amnesia. It also states: When Taiyang reversion occurs, if severe, it enters the Heart, manifesting as amnesia and sorrow.
