(Heat until red-hot, quench in water until fully processed.) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 4 liang, soaked in river water, dregs removed, dried and ground into fine powder for use) Qingyan (Halitum, 6 liang, finely ground) Fengmi (Honey, 1 jin, clarified to remove wax) Li (Pyrus Sinensis Fruit, 10 pieces, peeled, pitted, and juice extracted by pressing).
First, add the pear juice and Lu Ganshi (Calamina) into the ointment base, boil for five to seven times boiling over high heat. Then add Qingyan (Halitum), stir with Huai Liu Zhi (branches of Sophora japonica or Salix alba) until it turns brown. Pour into a porcelain jar containing cold water to remove "fire toxicity". It is best to prepare this in the twelfth lunar month; the first and eleventh months are secondary; other months are unsuitable.
[From *Jisheng Fang*] Chan Guang Gao (Toad Light Ointment): Treats chronic eye diseases, unblocks meridians, removes nebulae. Must be prepared on a "Cheng" or "Kai" day in the twelfth lunar month.
Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey, 4 liang, select white-colored, stir-fried. Take one stalk of green onion from the previous year, remove roots and skin, cut short, and boil together with honey until white foam disappears. Boil until the onion becomes soft and cooked, filter dregs through cotton cloth, let settle, and skim off the wax layer with paper.) Huangdan (Lithargyrum, 3 qian, processed by water levigation, used raw) Miduoseng (Lead Monoxide, 3 qian, processed by water levigation, used raw) Luganshi (Calamina, calcined, 5 qian, purified by water levigation. The above three ingredients are ground extremely fine and poured into the aforementioned honey, stirred evenly with one branch each of peach and willow wood, then set aside.) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, soaked in decoction, peel and tip removed. The above three ingredients, 3 qian each.) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, rhizome head removed, cleaned, 2 liang) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.5 liang) Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex), Hezi Pi (Terminalia Chebula Pericarpium), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Xuanjingshi (Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus), Jingquanshi (Well Spring Stone), Wumingyi (Haematites), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Daizheshi (Ferrum Oxidatum Rubrum), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha). (The above fifteen ingredients, 3 qian each, crushed. Decoct with either snow water or flowing river water, 5 sheng, in a silver or porcelain vessel until reduced to 3 sheng. Filter clean, then reduce further to 1 sheng. Pour the fifteen-ingredient herbal water into the previously prepared honey mixture. Simmer slowly over low fire until the color turns purple-gold. Then add the following herbs, ensuring the fire is not too intense.) Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), Hupo (Amber), Zhusha (Cinnabar, ground separately), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen, pounded, oil removed, kernel used). (The above five ingredients, 3 qian each. The first four are ground into a paste, then Ruiren is added. Process by water levigation, grind together until fine and clear. If there are residues, perform water levigation again. Clarify, then perform water levigation once more.) When pouring into the previous purple-gold medicine, boil together for one or two boils. The standard is that when dropped into water, the medicine does not disperse. Generally, avoid undercooking or overcooking. Bury in soil for seven days, then take out and place in a silver vessel for proper storage. Add the subsequent fine powders. When pouring the medicine, stir evenly with peach and willow branches.
Nan Pengsha (Borax), Zhenzhu (Margarita), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shanhu Zhi (Corallium Rubrum). (These four ingredients, 1 qian each.) Shexiang (Moschus, 5 fen).
The above five ingredients are ground extremely fine, stirred evenly with peach and willow branches, poured into the previous medicinal liquid, and stirred uniformly again. Then seal the container mouth with paper and store for immediate use. If any medicine remains unused, wash the bowl with clean water, then boil the wash water for three to five boils to collect it separately. This can be used for washing eyes or, if the ointment is too thick, added in small amounts to adjust consistency.
The above process uses mulberry wood charcoal for heating, totaling twenty-nine ingredients.
[From *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*] Treats eye heat, generating red and white nebulae. Select fine, straight sparrow droppings, mix with human milk, apply to the eyes, and allow them to dissolve completely. Wuzhegu (Sepiae Endoconcha) treats all types of floating nebulae in the eyes; grind finely and mix with honey for application. Additionally, Wuzhegu powder is effective for treating heat in the eyes.
[Danjie] Treats eye nebulae. Make ropes from Chubai Pi (Celastrorum Cortex), dry in the sun, burn to ash, grind fine, and apply to the eyes; gradual regression is excellent. Another prescription: Remove bile from Zhu Dan Pi (Porcine Gallbladder Membrane), twist into rope shape, burn to ash, and apply to the eyes; also effective.
[Dongyuan] Bi Yun San (Green Cloud Powder): A nasal insufflation powder for external eye obstructions.
Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang) Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 qian) Ruxiang (Olibanum, small amount) Shexiang (Moschus, add small amount of Olibanum if needed).
Crush Danggui and Mahuang into coarse powder, stir-fry until black. Add Ruxiang and Shexiang, grind extremely fine. Hold in mouth to melt and insufflate into the nose.
Chubi San (Nasal Insufflation Powder)
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 3 qian) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 qian) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 5 fen each) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian) Manjingzi (Vittariae Fructus, 3 qian) Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 1 qian).
Grind into powder and insufflate into the nose.
[Dongyuan] Yang Sheng's mother suffered from red eye, with nebulae forming like white stars.
Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex), Huashi (Hirudo), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Guitou (Angelicae Sinensis Radix head), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra). (Each 3 qian).
Divide into four doses, decoct and wash the eyes. Instruct the patient to avoid bathing, only washing feet is permitted.
[From *Qianjin Fang*] Treatment method: Cut a section of goose feather quill. Use it to suction near the cornea and directly opposite the sclera. The nebula will naturally gather upwards. Hook and pull it with a needle, cut it off, and vision will be restored. Place cotton over the eye to stop bleeding. Recovery in three days.
[Dongyuan] Treated Madam Wei Bangyan. She suddenly developed an eye nebula rising from below, green in color, with unbearable swelling and pain. My teacher said: "A nebula rising from below indicates disease in the Yangming meridian." Green is not one of the five primary colors of the directions; it likely indicates combined pathology of the Lung and Kidney. I consulted painters, mixing ink and lead white to match the color closely, confirming it matched the nebula. Thus, Lung and Kidney pathology was confirmed without doubt. We drained the pathogens from the Lung and Kidney, using herbs entering the Yangming meridian as guides. It was effective, but the disease recurred three times later. The originating meridians and nebula colors varied, so I adjusted based on observation. I stated: "All meridians connect to the eyes; if the meridians are diseased, the pathology follows. This must be due to irregular meridian flow, hence the persistent eye disease." Inquiry confirmed this. Therefore, treating the irregular meridians stopped the disease from recurring.
Acupuncture and moxibustion for external eye obstructions are detailed in the chapter on Red Eyes.
