[Wu] There are four syndromes of infantile nocturnal crying: one is Cold, two is Heat, three is double tongue or mouth sores, and four is Ke Wu (sudden fright caused by unfamiliar people or objects). In the Cold syndrome, the infant cries due to abdominal pain, with a cyanotic and pale complexion, cold breath from the mouth, a cold abdomen, and bending the waist while crying; this is the Cold syndrome. In the Heat syndrome, the infant cries with mental restlessness, a red face, dark yellow urine, heat in the mouth, a warm abdomen, sometimes sweating during crying, and extending the body backward while crying; this is the Heat syndrome. If it is double tongue or mouth sores, the infant desires to suckle but cannot, crying immediately upon touching the nipple with the lips, with slight heat on the body and forehead. One should urgently use a lamp to illuminate the mouth for examination; if there are no sores, the tongue must be double. Ke Wu refers to crying caused by being offended by the qi of strangers; treatment should follow each specific syndrome.
Suan Ru Wan (Garlic Milk Pill) treats nocturnal crying due to abdominal pain. Dang Gui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Pill) treats abdominal pain due to Zang Cold. (These two formulas are seen under "Abdominal Pain".)
[Tian] Wu Wei Zi San (Schisandra Powder) treats infantile nocturnal crying, as well as abdominal pain that worsens at night, resembling possession by evil spirits.
Ingredients: Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 0.5 liang); Fu Shen (Poria Cum Radix), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, prepared) (each 2.5 qian).
Preparation and administration: Grind the above into coarse powder, decoct in water, and adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
[Qian] San Huang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) treats abdominal heat-pain, nocturnal crying, red face, cracked lips, and dark urine; swallow with Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). (Note: Heat-pain does not cause bending of the waist or coldness of the limbs.)
[Wu] Deng Hua San (Lamp Wick Ash Powder) treats nocturnal crying due to mental restlessness from Heat syndrome.
Usage: Take three or four lamp wick ashes (Deng Hua), grind finely, mix with decoction of Deng Xin Cao (Herba Junci Effusi) to apply in the mouth, or administer with milk, three times daily. Another method: apply lamp wick ash to the nipple for the infant to suckle. If lamp wick ash is unavailable, burning Juncus effusus to ash is also excellent. Yet another method: take seven lamp wick ashes, Peng Sha (Borax), and a small amount of Chen Sha (Cinnabar), grind finely, mix with honey, and smear on the lips for immediate calm.
[Dan] Formula for infantile nocturnal crying:
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) (2.5 qian), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, prepared) (5 fen), Zhu Ye (Folium Bambusae), Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (one slice). Decoct in water and take orally.
[Dan Liao] Long Chi San (Dragon Tooth Powder) treats incessant infantile nocturnal crying. (This formula is seen under "Ao Ku" [Stubborn Crying], which is the Long Chi San from Ben Shi Fang mentioned above, lacking only Qiang Huo.)
[Shi] Another formula: Chan Tui (Periostracum Cicadae), fourteen pieces, remove legs, grind into powder, add Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), one zi, and administer with honey.
[Dan] Ma Chi Xian (Portulaca oleracea) burned to ash and ground finely, applied to the nipple for the infant to suckle, is effective. For infantile nocturnal crying, Huang Lian stir-fried with Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), combined with Gan Cao and Zhu Ye, can be decocted and taken.
[Shi] Treating infantile nocturnal crying: Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), half qian, finely ground, mixed with clear water and taken orally.
[Wu] Pu Huang San (Lygodii Pollen Powder) treats infantile double tongue. (This formula is seen under "Tongue".) Mu Li San (Oyster Shell Powder) treats infantile mouth sores. (This formula is seen under "Sores".)
Method for treating nocturnal crying due to Ke Wu: Take one burnt matchstick head from the family kitchen, using the charred tip as the top. Write with cinnabar ink: "I am the Five Thunder Deity of Heaven, coming to become a divine general, capable of capturing the nocturnal crying child, binding him forever without release. Urgently obey the decree of Taishang Laojun." After writing, do not let the child know. Place it standing under the bed, leaning against the front leg of the bed. For boys, place on the left; for girls, on the right. This is effective.
[Ming] For nocturnal crying, moxa-accumulate on Zhongchong (PC9), one moxa cone stops it immediately.
