Sudden onset of panting accompanied by chest and abdominal distension.
[Tian] Sudden panting is commonly known in folk tradition as "Ma Pi Feng" (Horse Spleen Wind), characterized by obstruction of urination and defecation. It requires urgent purgation using Niuhuang Huoming San (Calculus Bovis Decoction for Life Snatching), followed by Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) to calm the condition.
Niuhuang Huoming San: Treats pediatric lung distension with panting and fullness, urgency in the chest and diaphragm, flapping movement of the two hypochondria, sunken intercostal spaces forming pits, dilated nasal orifices, mental restlessness, coughing and wheezing, hoarseness without voice, and tidal accumulation of phlegm and saliva. This is colloquially called Ma Pi Feng. If not treated urgently, death may occur within a day or night.
Ingredients: Hei Qianniu (Black Morning Glory Seed, Semen Pharbitidis) and Bai Qianniu (White Morning Glory Seed, Semen Pharbitidis albae) [each 1 liang, half raw and half processed]; Chuan Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei); Binglang (Areca Seed, Semen Arecae) [each 1 liang].
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. For a three-year-old child, administer 2 qian per dose, mixed with cold rice water. If there is excessive phlegm, add a small amount of Nifen (Calomel, Hydrargyri Chloridum). It can be taken at any time; add a little honey if desired.
Wujia San (Priceless Powder): Treats panting and rapid breathing caused by wind-heat, with mental restlessness and discomfort, commonly referred to as Ma Pi Feng.
Ingredients: Chen Sha (Cinnabar, Stibnatum); Qingfen (Calomel, Hydrargyri Chloridum); Gansui (Kansui Root, Radix Kansui) [wrapped in flour, boiled, dried, 1.5 qian].
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Administer 1 zi per dose. Use a small amount of warm rice water, add one drop of oil, place the medicinal powder on top, allow it to sink, then pour the rice water down. Effect is immediate.
Another method: Pediatric panting and distension, commonly known as Ma Pi Feng or Feng Hou (Wind Throat). Measure the length from the palm crease to the tip of the middle finger on the affected child's hand using a grass stem, and cut it off as one standard unit. Take two such stems. Place them vertically but slightly slanted above the breast, aligning their tips. Place a third stem horizontally connecting the tips of the first two. Moxibustion of three cones (zhuang) is applied at this point. This method has been seen to cure many cases.
[General Knowledge] Ma Pi Feng occurring within the first 100 days of life is incurable.
[Bencao] To treat pediatric stubborn crying (Ao Ku), use Longchi San (Dragon Tooth Powder).
Ingredients: Longchi (Dragon Tooth, Os Draconis); Chanqiao (Cicada Slough, Periostracum Cicadae) [remove wings, feet, and soil]; Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis, Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis); Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome et Radix, Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii); Fuling (Poria, Polyporus); Renshen (Ginseng Root, Radix Ginseng) [equal parts].
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Administer 1 da qian per dose. Decoct with water until reduced to 6 fen volume, strain, and take warm.
[Zhang Zihe] A child was weeping bitterly ceaselessly throughout the day. The pulse in both hands was wiry and tight. Dairen (Zhang Zihe's courtesy name) stated: Excessive Heart Fire overacts upon Lung Metal. The Lung does not accept this oppression, hence the crying. The Lung governs grief. Wang Taipu said: When the Heart is scorched, pain is severe; thus, when scorching is severe, grief is also severe. First, bathe the child in warm water to induce sweating through immersion. Since the Lung governs the skin and hair, sweating disperses Lung heat. Upon stopping the bath, the crying ceased. Subsequently, prescribe Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Decoction) added with Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, Radix Platycodi), decocted together with Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, Folium Bambusae), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and Xiaokao/Piaoxiao (Mirabilite, Natrii Sulfas) to purge pathogenic heat from the diaphragm.
[Qian Yi] Pediatric startled crying is caused by pathogenic heat invading the Heart. One should calm the mind; Anshen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill) is the primary treatment.
[Zhu Danxi] If a child suddenly cries out loudly, death is inevitable. This is because excessive fire exhausts the vital qi.
