[From *Da Yi*] When a pregnant woman suffers from disease, causing fetal instability, the fetus may be expelled. Take four liang of flour collected on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, add two large cups of water, and decoct until one cup and three fen remain. Filter through silk to remove dregs, divide into three warm doses, and the fetus will be expelled promptly. Another prescription: use five sheng of fermented dough (Daqu) and one dou of clear wine, boil twice, remove dregs, divide into five doses. Fast the night before, then take the remaining doses; the fetus will turn into mush, and the mother will suffer no distress. (Not recorded in *Qian Jin Fang*, but extremely effective.) Another prescription: use one sheng of malt (Mai Ya), grind into powder, mix with water, decoct to two sheng, and take it; the fetus will be expelled immediately with miraculous effect. Another prescription: use two pieces of Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi), grind into powder, mix with strong vinegar, apply to the right foot, then wash off; this is highly effective. Another prescription: take one chicken egg, place salt amounting to three finger-pinches inside the egg, consume it, and the fetus will be expelled immediately.
[Zhu Danxi] Method for Sterilization.
Use one sheng of white flour yeast, five sheng of unadulterated wine, mix into a paste, and decoct to two sheng and half. Filter through silk to remove dregs, divide into three doses. On the evening before the expected onset of menstruation, take the first dose; at the fifth watch of the next morning, take the second dose; at dawn, take the third dose. Menstruation will then commence, resulting in permanent sterility.
[From *Da Yi*] Verified formula for preventing pregnancy. Burn one square chi of old silkworm paper to ash, mix with wine, and ingest; pregnancy will not occur again for life. Another prescription: fry Mercury (Shuiyin) in oil, take one pill the size of a jujube pit on an empty stomach; this permanently prevents conception without harming the body.
[Zhu Danxi] Fetal formation requires the interaction of Yang (Qi) and Yin (Blood). If Qi and Blood are deficient and insufficient to nourish the fetus, spontaneous abortion occurs. Alternatively, labor or anger may injure the emotions, stirring up internal Fire, which can also cause miscarriage. Tracing the root cause, all stem from Heat; Fire consumes matter, which is the natural law of creation. *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* attributes miscarriage to Wind-Cold injuring the uterus, which fails to grasp the true nature of the pathology. I observed a woman surnamed Jia who consistently miscarried around the third month of pregnancy. Her pulse was large and powerless on the left hand, and choppy upon heavy pressure, indicating Blood deficiency. Since she was young, I only tonified Middle Qi to allow Blood to naturally flourish. It was early summer, so I instructed her to take one qian of Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) powder with strongly decocted Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) soup. After taking 30-40 doses, the pregnancy was preserved successfully. Reflecting on this, miscarriages due to internal Heat combined with deficiency are common. One must distinguish the severity of "Heat" and "Deficiency." Generally, at three months of pregnancy, the Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) is dominant, making miscarriage likely. Otherwise, why are Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), prepared Mugwort (Ai Ye), and Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) considered excellent fetuses-stabilizing herbs? Physicians who cherish life should not underestimate this.
[From *Da Yi*] Treatment for recurrent miscarriage with failure to maintain a solid pregnancy.
Licorice Root (Gancao), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) (equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. On an empty stomach, mix two qian with warm wine. Avoid Chinese cabbage, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and vinegar-preserved foods. (Note: Danxi's discussions focus on Deficient-Heat rather than Cold; this formula is retained here tentatively, hoping it may apply in one out of a thousand cases.)
Vinegar-Prepared Aconite Pill treats recurrent miscarriage. (See section on Metrorrhagia.)
Failure to conceive, frequent miscarriage, followed by leukorrhea of five colors and pain. Moxibustion on Baomen (Uterus Gate) point. (Baomen is located two cun to the left of Guanmen; Zihu (Child House) is two cun to the right of Guanmen.)
