[Tang] The condition known as *Ke Wu* (Guest Intrusion) occurs because a child's spirit and qi are weak. Suddenly encountering unusual objects, being touched by people they have never seen, or passing through temples and Buddhist monasteries where one clashes with the qi of ghosts and deities, leads to this condition. Hence it is called *Ke Wu*, also referred to as *Zhong Ke*. Its manifestations include vomiting and purging of green, yellow, or white substances; abdominal pain accompanied by body retroflexion when food and fluids are about to be expelled; fluctuating facial complexion; a presentation resembling epilepsy but without upward deviation of the eyes; and a rapid pulse. It is appropriate to administer Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) and Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder).
Zhenzhu San: Treats *Ke Wu* convulsions, ghostly invasion and frightful evil, phlegm-heat, disharmony of the Heart residence, restlessness of spirit, constant palpitations (*Zheng Chong*), startle during sleep, teeth grinding, heat in the five centers, sweating with panting, red face with white tongue coating, yawning with irritability and thirst, dark scanty urine or diarrhea, and occasionally vomiting or purging yellow froth. Regular use dispels evil influences and calms the spirit.
Ingredients: Pearl (Zhenzhu), Cuttlefish Bone (Haipiaoxiao), Talcum (Huashi) [each 1 qian]; Poria (Baifuling), Ginseng (Renshen), Aconite Root Lateralis Preparata (Baifuzi), Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted); Scorpion (Quanxie), Musk (Shexiang), Borneol (Naozi, ground separately) [each 5 qian]; Cinnabar (Shengzhu, ground separately, 1 qian); Gold Leaf and Silver Leaf (Jinyinbo) [30 pieces of gold, 20 pieces of silver].
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder and mix uniformly. Take half a qian each time. Decoct Juncus effusus (Dengxincao) and Ophiopogon tuber (Mendongtang), add a little honey, and take orally. Administer once at noon and once before bedtime.
[Tian] For cases where *Ke Wu* induces fright, the treatment method involves using two liang of loam from the kitchen hearth, ground finely, mixed with one egg (shell removed). Add a small amount of water to form a paste. First, bathe the child in a decoction of peach and willow branches, then apply this medicine to the five centers (palms, soles, and vertex) and the fontanelle area. (Chen Wuyue’s method uses equal parts of kitchen hearth loam and earthworm excrement, applied in the same manner.)
[Waitai Miyao] To treat sudden onset of *Ke Wu* with locked jaws and inability to speak, use equal parts of Asarum (Xixin) and Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), placed in the mouth, which is effective.
[Shi] Baifu Wan: Universally treats pediatric cough with phlegm, cold-induced fever, vomiting and diarrhea, and mental restlessness, with miraculous efficacy.
Ingredients: Arisaema rhizome (Nanting, 2 liang); Pinellia tuber (Banxia), Aconite Root Lateralis Preparata (Baifuzi), Alum (Baifan) [each 1 liang].
Preparation and Administration: Grind into a fine powder. Use ginger juice to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. One-year-old infants take eight pills, dissolved and administered with mint tea. (Note: Nanting and Banxia must be soaked in snowwater stored from winter on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, dried, and re-soaked repeatedly for nine cycles before use.)
