[No] When a newborn infant is completely unable to cry immediately after birth, it must be due to dystocia (difficult labor) or cold of the Stomach. Quickly wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them in your arms. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet. Instead, place the placenta into the charcoal fire to burn it. Meanwhile, twist a large paper strip, dip it in oil, light it, and smoke the area below the umbilical cord. Since the umbilical cord connects to the infant, when smoked by fire, the heat energy enters the abdomen through the navel. Then, wash the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a short while, the vital qi returns, and the infant cries normally as usual. Only then can you bathe the infant. After bathing, cut the umbilical cord.
[Hai] Baishou San (Hundred Longevity Powder). Used for infants under one month old; if used long-term, the person will not suffer from sores or scabies in old age.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (1 liang) Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (1 qian)
Decoct the above ingredients in water. Have an elderly woman wipe away the infant's saliva, clean the mouth thoroughly, and administer the decoction orally. Pour the remaining medicine into a basin for bathing the infant, and apply it all over the body. This is excellent.
Another prescription: Pure Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) 1 qian, water 1 sheng. Decoct in advance. When the infant is born but has not yet cried, administer it immediately to remove foul matter ("navel stool") from the abdomen, and to resolve accumulated heat toxins in the fetus. It prevents sores for life and also wards off diseases such as neonatal tetanus (Qifeng, 脐风).
[Qian] If the fetal qi is substantial, the face is red, eyes are black with abundant iris, and the infant laughs easily. If the fetal qi is deficient, the face is yellow, eyes are black with scarce iris and abundant sclera, and the infant cries frequently. Also distinguish between the fatness or thinness of the parents; a fat parent cannot give birth to a thin child, nor can a thin parent give birth to a fat child. In cases of "Fetal Fat," the infant is born with thick muscles and ruddy complexion throughout the body. After one month, they gradually become emaciated, the sclera turns pinkish-red, there is five-palm heat (Wuxin Fanre, 五心烦热), difficulty in defecation, frequent drooling, and this should be treated primarily with bath therapy.
Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻) (2 qian) Scorpio (Xiewei, 蝎尾) (de-venomed) Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (each 5 fen) Dendrobii Officinalis Herba? No, here likely refers to Ophicephali Periostracum? Text says Wushe Rou (Urotheca/Dry snake meat) (soaked in wine, dried and powdered) Alum (Baifan, 白矾) (each 3 qian)
Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) (1 zi) Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 青黛) (3 qian)
Grind the above ingredients uniformly. Use 3 qian each time, with 3 bowls of water, a handful of Peach Twig (Taozhi, 桃枝), and 5-7 leaves. Decoct together until ten boils occur. Bathe the infant in the warm solution. Do not bathe the back.
In cases of "Fetal Deficiency," the infant is born with a dull complexion, thin muscles, watery white diarrhea, lack of ruddiness in the body, frequent hiccupping/gasping, frequent hiccups, lackluster eyes, and this should also be treated primarily with bath therapy.
[Shi] If the mother's qi is insufficient, the child will be emaciated with thin flesh. If the father's essence is insufficient, the child may present with open fontanelle (Jielu, 解颅) and excessive sclera.
In cases of "Fetal Heat," the infant is born with blood qi disturbances, frequent crying, high fever with a pale tea-colored complexion, red eyes, reddish-yellow sticky stool. Urgently treat with Niuru Bath Therapy (Niuru Yufa, 酿乳浴法).
[Tang] While in the womb, if the mother has heat, or indulges in eating alcohol, wheat products, and other heat-toxic substances, this transmits to the fetus. The infant is born with a red face, closed eyes, high fever, incessant crying, and a mouth hot like boiling water. This is the presentation of Fetal Heat. Use Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmanniae Radix Decoction).
Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi, 生地) Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药) Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen, 栝蒌根)
Equal parts of the above. Coarsely crush. Take 0.5 liang per dose, with 1 sheng of water, decoct to 0.6 sheng. The nursing mother can also take this, applying a small amount to the infant's mouth.
For Fetal Heat, do not seek rapid effects from medication. The treatment method should rely on gradual resolution via breastfeeding. If cool/cold medicines are used to attack the pathogen, it will inevitably damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to vomiting, which becomes a major complication. It is advisable to use Shengdi Huang Tang, administered via breastfeeding. If the fetus has Cold in the womb, and after birth fails to receive proper care, further injuring Wind, the symptoms include a cyan-white complexion, cold extremities, tremors of hands and feet, and locked jaw. This is due to Fetal Cold, or Cold Qi invading the Zang organs due to deficiency, causing abdominal pain and intestinal colic (Pan Chang Nei Diao, 盘肠内吊). (See the section on Cold Abdominal Pain for Fetal Cold treatment.)
[Tian] For convulsions occurring in the first month. Immediately take pig milk, grind finely, add small amounts of Cinnabar (Chensha, 辰砂) and Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 牛黄), mix well, and smear inside the mouth. This is miraculous. The nursing mother should take Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unblocking and Resolving) for three doses, and the convulsions will subside naturally.
[Dou] To treat infants under one month suffering from convulsions resembling stroke, nearing death. Grind Cinnabar (Chensha, 辰砂) thickly in fresh well water to extract the juice. Apply to the five palm centers. This is most effective.
[Tang] For treating fetal epilepsy and convulsions. Use whole Scorpion (Quanxie, 全蝎) including head and tail. Wrap in fresh Mint Leaf (Boheye, 薄荷叶), bind tightly with hemp thread, roast dry over fire, and powder. Separately powder fresh Cinnabar (Shengzhusha, 生朱) and Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) in small amounts. Mix with Ophiopogonis Decoction (Maodongtang, 麦门冬汤) for administration.
If an infant is born with jaundice covering the entire body and face, golden in color, accompanied by high fever, constipation, urine like dark cypress sap, loss of appetite for milk/food, and incessant crying, this is the presentation of Fetal Jaundice (Taihuang, 胎黄). For any such case, the nursing mother should take Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmanniae Radix Decoction) and avoid alcohol, wheat products, and the Five Pungent Spices (Wuxin, 五辛).
[Qian] Mugua Wan (Papaya Pill). Treats vomiting in newborns. Because upon birth, oral secretions/foul matter are not wiped clean, swallowing causes vomiting. Treat with Mugua Wan.
Upon birth, it is urgent to wipe the mouth clean. If the infant cries first, they will swallow the residue, leading to various diseases.
Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua, 木瓜) Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) Calomelas (Nifen, 腻粉) Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香) Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔) (equal parts)
Grind into fine powder. Form pills with flour paste, size of small millet grains. Take 1-2 pills at any time, washed down with Licorice Water (Gancaoshui, 甘草水).
[Tian] For vomiting in the first month, first use Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill) to purge. If diarrhea occurs, follow with Zhuchen Jian (Cinnabar Decoction) to sink the pathogenic qi, allowing foul matter to pass downward without vomiting. For "Red Dan" appearing in the first month, where skin resembles painted cinnabar, first use Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovalis Powder) to support the interior, then apply Lanye San (Isatis Leaf Powder) externally. The nursing mother takes Qingliang Yinzi (Cooling Drink) for three doses.
The above conditions in the first month after birth are generally shallow levels of Fetal Toxin (Taidu, 胎毒). Diseases occurring after one or two years are deep levels of Fetal Toxin and require flexible treatment methods.
[Yuan] Li Shuhe asked Dongyuan one day: "I had a son in my middle age. After one year, he developed red silk tumors that were incurable. Later, three or four sons died of similar tumors at one or two years old. May I ask why?" Dongyuan replied: "Let me think." The next day, seeing Shuhe, he said: "I have found the cause. You have latent fire in the Kidney, and your essence contains many red filaments. This is transmitted via Qi to the offspring, causing this disease. When triggered, it manifests between the muscles. This is commonly known as 'Fetal Tumor.' Check, and it matches." He prescribed Zishen Wan (Kidney Nourishing Pill) for several doses to drain the Kidney fire and supplement innate deficiency. Avoid alcohol, meat, and pungent-hot foods. His wife took Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) to nourish Yin and Blood. After five months of pregnancy, she took a powder of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩). The subsequent child reached three years old without recurrence. Shuhe said: "You are a divine physician." He subsequently studied under him, and his son is now strong and healthy.
Danxi's Supplement states that children often suffer from sores and abscesses due to depressed Heart Qi, resulting from excessive fetal diet and toxin reception. This is a profound truth. Children have undeveloped awareness and unmoved desires, so how can Heart Qi be depressed? Ancient sages stated that breastfed infants often have damp-heat and receive toxins from excessive fetal diet. Furthermore, during conception, if the parents' Qi and Blood have biases toward cold or heat, it often causes disease in the child. Moreover, the physical form is not yet firm, and the membrane (Huangmo, 肓膜) is still fragile. Why ignore this?
I once saw a man who suffered from illness for years. After recovering, he had a son. At three months, the infant developed heat. A boil appeared between the Yangming and Shaoyang meridians in the right axilla. Just as it healed, another appeared opposite in the left axilla, oozing pus and blood, with no hope of recovery. Physician Wang Shoufu used Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Baidu San (Ten Thousand Toxins Resolving Powder) added with Ginseng, using Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) as assistant and Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao, 犀角) as guide. The nursing mother drank a large dose for two months, and the infant stabilized. Over three months later, sudden abdominal distension occurred with red rashes like rosy clouds. Juice of Shearblade Grass (Jiandaocao, 剪刀草) mixed with evening silkworm sand (Wancansha, 晚蚕砂) was applied, resolving quickly. Half a month later, the distension moved into the scrotum, becoming swollen and terrifyingly yellow. Two days later, the sac ruptured, revealing the testes, discharging clear fluid. Perilla Leaf (Zisuye, 紫苏叶) was used to catch bran-charcoal fine powder to support/heal it. It healed in over ten days. Given the father's long-term illness, could the mother not have fire of depression and residual heat/toxin causing this? This must be understood.
[Yuan] Zhang Jinshi's second son, aged two, had sores all over his head. One day the sores suddenly disappeared, and he developed phlegm-wheezing. I examined him and said: "This is Fetal Toxin. Do not give resolving/purgative medicines." Everyone was astonished. I added: "What did your wife crave during pregnancy?" Zhang said: "Spicy, hot foods." I dictated a formula: Ginseng, Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘), Chuanxiong, Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈皮), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong, 木通). Decoct strongly, add Bamboo Sap (Zhuli, 竹沥), and administer. He recovered in a few days. How did I know? His spirit was dull and fatigued, the disease was deep, definitely not external contraction. What else could it be but Fetal Toxin?
My second daughter was thin and irritable, with inherent heat. At three months of pregnancy, during summer heat, she was thirsty and had low-grade fevers. I taught her Siwu Tang added with Huangqin, Chenpi, raw Gancao, and Mutong. Due to laziness in decocting, she stopped after a few doses. Later, their son at two years old had sores all over the body. Suddenly, the sores healed overnight, and he developed malaria-like symptoms. I said: "This is Fetal Toxin." If the sores reappear, the illness will resolve itself. Indeed, it happened so. If she had strictly followed the previous formula during pregnancy, what illness would there be!
[Dan] Son of Zheng Lianshi, aged sixteen, suffered from stranguria starting at seven months of age, recurring every five to seven days. Upon onset, severe pain occurred, and about one cup's worth of material resembling millet/grain passed through the urinary tract before relief. Pulse was choppy when light, wiry when heavy. The form was thin and tall, complexion blue-green. I surmised the father must have taken many lower-jiao medications, leaving toxins in the fetus, remaining in the child's Mingmen (Gate of Life). I prescribed Zixue (Purple Snow) mixed with Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) powder, formed into pills the size of tung seeds, dried thoroughly, administered with hot water, 100 pills at a time, covered with food. Half a day later, severe pain erupted, connecting waist to abdomen, and the urinary tract opened, passing about a large bowl of millet-like material. The illness reduced by 80%. Later, given 1 liang of Chenpi, 0.5 liang each of Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗) and Mutong, one dose. Passed another measure of millet-like material and recovered. If the father's dry-heat can affect the son, how much more so the mother? I record this to verify Dongyuan's case of red tumors; this is also heat in the Blood level.
Daughter of the Chen family, aged eight, suffered from epilepsy. Attacks occurred during cloudy/rainy weather or fright, with foaming at the mouth and bleating sounds like a sheep. I examined her and said: "This is Fetal Shock." The disease is deep and entrenched. Six months of regulation can bring peace, provided a bland diet supports the medicinal effect. Prescribed Shaogan Wan (Burnt Pill), followed by Siwu Tang added with Huanglian, adjusted according to seasons. Recovered in half a year. (Shaogan Wan recipe originally unverified. According to *Leicui*, use Xuanjingshi (Xuanjing Stone, 玄精石) and Qingfen (Calomelas, 轻粉) 1 qian each, Fenhuang (Lead Subnitrate, 粉霜) and Pengsha (Borax, 硼砂) 5 fen each. Grind uniformly, add 1 qian Hanshimen (Cold Food Flour, 寒食面), mix with water to form a cake, wrap in dough, bake until yellow, remove dough, grind fine, mix with water to form rice-sized pills. Age 1: 5 pills; Age 2: 10 pills, taken with warm water. Stop when foul matter is discharged. Uncertain if correct.)
